How to Get to Xiamen Hello Jianshuo and all I was so glad to find this site! Would be grateful if anybody has experience to share please? We need to be at Xiamen on 23 Dec, and then to Guilin on 28 Dec. However, we are not sure whether to depart from Beijing or Shanghai (as we are flying from the UK and stopping over at either Beijing or Shanghai). I looked up CTRIP which was really good. I would like to stop at Beijing but it's cheaper to fly from Shanghai. But then I have to transit from Pudong to Hongqiao before flying to Xiamen! Also, the journey from Xiamen to Guilin is also quite expensive. Do you know if there are other agencies available?? many thanks, any help is appreciated. Becky L |

Friends Started to Boycott French Products Wonton, why did you copy and paste the first part of a previous message in your response? I have already wrote a response addressing what you have had previously written about the resistance. And I was NOT calling the Chinese people filth, that was a response to you personally, due mainly to the fact that you were trivializing the suffering of the average French citizen in World War II and calling us cowards, although I now admit I wrote it in anger. Also, I have nothing to do with the prostestors, so regardless of how you feel about me personally, that should have no bearing on them. For the record, these protestors are not against the Chinese people, they are protesting the government, both for its treatment of Tibet and the injustices it bestowed on its own people. To make it short, I like the Chinese people and culture very much, I just don't like what is going on there now regarding the anti-French protests and to be honest, I really don't care much for you. Regardless, I am willing to put my politcal views aside for the moment, and still wish the Chinese athletes the best of luck during the course of the games. |

Lang Ping's American Volleyball Team Beat China Sure there are some critical comments, but overall I thought that the netizens were pretty supportive of Lang Ping. see http://my1510.cn/article.php?6c8ecfa3dd1b0a9f. Ditto for Liu Xiang. |

Train from Beijing to Shanghai Can someone show pics of T-train, and also discription of services compare to Z-train? Nick said Z is cleaner than T? but T cost more than Z, why is that? |
| 88 |
Lang Ping's American Volleyball Team Beat China @elliottng, do you play Chinese chess? do you know the general' soldier once crossed the river can never return! Now both China and US women volleyball team are in the semifinal, if China wins, Lang Ping will become the second fiddle in volleyball field in the eyes of Chinese. Should US team prevail this weekend, then Lang Ping is the traitor! Olympic game is like a peace time battle field, every score, every medal counts, it is all about pride, fame and glory, |
| 87 |
Lang Ping's American Volleyball Team Beat China I hope people see Lang Ping as a success story, of the opportunities of Chinese people in the external world as a result of the progress in sports, economics and society. Perhaps being the GM of Baixing.com, a division of an American company, is a little like being Lang Ping, helping out the American team! :) A confident Chinese people will celebrate Lang Ping as a Chinese success story. China will win the medal count anyway, lets just celebrate individuals who are exceptional and hope more and more Chinese are successful in the world stage! (as they obviously will be!) Come on, Jia you! |

Wangjianshuo's Blog Meetup I will be there in spirit. :) But I pinged my co-bloggers Min and Kai who are in Shanghai to see if they are interested. Have fun! |

Friends Started to Boycott French Products Im glad China can now see what i have been seeing it has been upsetting to me and it makes me so angry i like in England and people here are given only one side to the story of Tibet the media poison there minds against China I am of British ethnics and am not Chinese however I am very pro-China and its very unlikely that will ever change China is doing a lot to develop the Tibet region One example of what China is doing to help is education Tibetan education is poor - so ethnic Tibetans, along with other minorities, are allowed into university with lower scores than ethnic Han Chinese to boost their chances. If they were not apart of China there education would be pretty much nonexistent Also with all views on Tibet being independent aside if Tibet was an independent country what do you think would happen? There economy would be so low the country would be very poor I’m not sure where a lot of there food would come from because how would they import? They would have to reply on aid from other countries. The media here makes out that China does not know what is going on in Tibet but they are wrong in fact China know both sides to the story unlike the west Anyway don’t worry too much about things like this, there are other non-Chinese people like me who are on you’re side and will fight any ant Chinese comments The only reason MOST anti Chinese comments exist is because they dont understand the situation |

Olympic is about Competition and Happiness whoever had the idea that "a pretty face + another perfect voice = China's national interest" should be prosecuted or then sent to labor camp straight. it is so obvious, for people with a good taste, that a not-so-good-looking kid singing the "ode to the motherland" with a not-so-perfect-or-even-hoarse voice under such a huge setting will definitely be much more embracing and closer to the true Olympic spirit. |

Watch Out Bad Taxi Drivers in Beijing I graduated from Beijing University in early 1980s. I don't know what's been happening there as far as people's honesty is concerned. From my experience with Beijingers here in U.S. and in Beijing, I found it is fair to say that in today's Beijing, there are more cheaters, dishonest people than any other places in China. |
| 80 |
Watch Out Bad Taxi Drivers in Beijing I've personally had many experiences with bad taxi trips, and what I do is i take a picture of the drivers ID card in front of the passenger seat and say that I'm going to complain, and typically they give you a lower price, and do the correct thing. |

What's Wrong with China? Hmmm, before I sound like a jerk who thinks he knows everything about China or the "correct way", I must openly say that I'm only typing those thoughts up above as mere discussion points. I just don't think China should aim to be "rich" like Americans. Hugo Chavez, the propagandistically-smeared democratic leader of Venezuela, says it right when he says that development doesn't mean people should want to be "rich" materially. There are other ways to develop, there are other more important goals other than merely gaining rich as quickly as possible. The development of the people should be the aim, not just about giving access to capitalism and competing for the same senseless ground of mass consumerism. |
| 75 |
What's Wrong with China? Many of the comments here, especially the earlier ones, seem to frame China and its needs for development from a "Western" POV. While I understand that indeed Europe and North America have achieved tremendous lot in many areas, is it necessary to pinpoint the standard of developments to mimic those two areas'? While I do think that China need to develop and improve itself, I don't see why China needs to go full-throttle toward western ideals. Read Adbusters# 79 volume 16 number 5 (September/October 2008); civilization of the west is "dead": the new generation people of the west are stuck in "hipster" culture, rendering themselves narcisstic, vain, empty and obsessed with anti-authority notions even if it means they're going against themselves. The west is like ADHD case rampant in double-talks; that's the result of mishandling of "freedom". Is China supposed to be like that and just mimic whatever mistakes the west has done just because it smells of "more freedom and liberty"? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ @jo: the criticism you address toward China should first be addressed toward the USA. Why does the world now dump all those behaviors toward China first rather than the US or Europe? You're practically looking at your Chinese friends and made a hasty-generalization that all Chinese will be like them or that no one of your own country is doing similar thing. I'm not arguing that either China or the US is perfect or that either China or the US is totally at fault. I'm arguing that biases are floating around: 1. Who were causing major stock-market crashes throughout the 20th century? Chinese? Nope. 2. Who's the worst polluter per-capita? China? Nope. 3. Who installed Guantamo Bay and , Bombed Hiroshima and Nagasaki to oblivion and became one of the starters the nuclear-armaments race? China? Nope. There are many other points, but in short: all of the blames you put on China is disproportional to the whole picture, plus you're forgetting so many contemporary actions by USA, Europe and others. The blame isn't supposed to be on China alone; China isn't even the main player of the crimes you stated. The whole issue and topic is not even supposed to be a blame game at all. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ @ecodelta: Yes, democracy is "government of the people, by the people, for the people" however, what form would it take shape as? European social-democracy? Canadian/UK parliamentary government? American? As for "democracy" as usually thrown around in the media, it's American democracy and look at how it turns out to be. USA only have about 1/4-1/5 of PRC's population but USA have 5 times more pollution per capita than the newly developing PRC. Imagine if such "freedom" and "liberty" are handed out to Chinese people...imagine all the added numbers of cars. The world is currently squinting to tears because of what China is doing; imagine what the world would do if indeed "democracy" is installed hastily to the current generation of Chinese --the world would scream to death and find a pretext to dump all the global warming discussion solely upon China (as the media is currently doing) and escalate many other issues regarding China; that's on top of the possibility that China will be further subjugated under external and internal influences, which have first created the modern gap between the rich and the poor, the polluter and the polluted for centuries. "Democracy" is indeed ideally a "government of the people..." but "communism" is "temporary dictatorship of the proletariat" which in spirit (not in practice) wouldn't be that much different; the practice of the government would still depend on the person on top as well as the people governed, plus the rich, the religious/fundamentalist and the media. Each government still advertise itself as the vanguard of the people, thinking of the people's short-term and long-term benefits. Thus, I lean toward K. Wang's argument to a degree: China will need to chart its own course and learn to adapt, adopt and improve its own cultures and "nature". I seriously doubt the notion that PRC leaders don't know the contradictions and paradoxical nature of their government. I think the PRC's approach can be summarized in Deng's famous words: "It doesn't matter if a cat is black or white, so long as it catches mice." It simply is just impossible to be coherent all the time when handling a government: just look at all the double-talks of democratic governments...no one actually adheres to democracy all the time (eg. look at what MI6 and the CIA are doing around the world). Let's hope that the stream of discussion between China, USA and Europe will continue on increasingly better terms; as it is now portrayed in most public discussions, the differences between those countries' will only heighten the sense of alienation and antagonism. --------------------- Hmm, come to think of it: Isn't it funny how many of the comments in this thread is usually both: addressing PRC's deeds as wrong, but at the same time also addresses PRC as wrong if the PRC isn't doing what it's doing as well? (eg. China is the worst polluter and it's wrong to have so many cars in China, yet, at the same time, it's also wrong not to give Chinese people freedom-- to buy cars--?). Why isn't such paradoxical correlation between individualism/freedom, social responsibility and consequences addressed? Another one that floats around in public psyche is that China is wrong for having so many population but China is also wrong and "apartheid-like" at implementing "one child policy" --so what should China do? Just gulp down all the blame, racism and mockeries while not curbing down its population and environmental problems within its capabilities? It's like no matter what PRC does, it's always wrong and evil, just because it doesn't use the label "democracy" and just because it opt to more pragmatic approaches rather than subtle lullabies for the masses. Do people really think they can handle the governance of China better? It's too simplistic an argument, I say. |

Update about Yifan Whenever Yifan bangs his head on the floor or hurt himself to get his way, you need look right into his eyes and tell him: this behavior is not acceptable, it is wrong, and then warn him if he does it again, he will get a time out (like sit him at a coner with no toys). you need to tell him very firmly, and always look into his eyes when you say it. I am a mother of a nine-year-old, and I have helped many friends out with the tactic. |
| 62 |
Update about Yifan Jianshuo, my daughter is 1mon younger than yifan, and she is in the same stage:-). sometime i am amazed by how much she can understand the adults and then figure out how to deal with us. if she cris for something unreasonable, we will "ignore" her request. As long as the parents are persistant, the baby can figure that out. Of course, she will try her best to cross the line the next time, so the parents (or all family members) need to be consistant. My wife is more disciplined and does better job than me. over the past month we have been successfully built her habit of holding her milk-bottom by herself. at the begining, she kept crying and tried to push back by giving up eating, and we just let her take the concequence of not having the milk to drink. WHen she wanted to end the tension, she would try to find a step down by offering either being cooperative, or trying to please the parents:-). You thought she learned that and is cute; but remember, the next time she will do the same thing again, untill she beats you down, or until she builds the good habit! In short, he/she knows what he/she is doing even when crazily unreasonable. You just need to let him/her know your attitude persistently and consistently. |

Where to Study Chinese, Beijing or Shanghai? I went to Donghua University to do a course for a year. Cheaper than some of the more obvious ones, and I really enjoyed studying there. Great, friendly and helpful teachers and a good progressive programme based on the Peking University texts. I came to China expecting to learn some some basic speaking and a few characters and I left quite speaking and writing pretty damn well. I wasn't even what you would call a 'good student'. So consider that a recommendation from me. |

Update about Yifan My two cents: 1. Try to explain the reason to the child that why this is not reasonable and not allowed. 2. If it is not worked, try to find something may interest the child to shift his/her attention. 3. If it is still not worked, try to let he/she to bear part of the result by himself/herself on the premise that it's safe. A new born baby is like a blank sheet. The parents are just like painters. |
| 54 |
Update about Yifan No answer is more confusing than that from a Chinese kid when one asks about his/her age. According to the fifth great Chinese invention, when a kid was born, he/she was 1 year old. Then after each lunar new year day, his/her age is increased by 1. One non-sensical example, Chinese women’s gymnast "He Kexin" was actually born on Jan 1, 1994. According to Western or international standard, she is 14 year old and ineligible for the Beijing Olympics because of 16-year-old Olympic age limit for gymnastics. But according to the fifth great Chinesse invention, she is 16 year old now. Then Western media starts to cry foul. How could clever Chinese explain their fifth great invention to the dumb Westerners? Well, China produced her passport that claimed she was born Jan. 1, 1992, making her old enough to perform a brilliant uneven bar routine and push China to the women’s all around gold medal. The implicit explanation: either you dumbass figure out a kid's age based on our rule or GET THE F*** OUT! Anyone dares to guess the age of the blogger's kid: (A) 1 (B) 2 (C) 3 (D) too early to tell |

Update about Yifan @zjmei, good point. Kids are doing many things like being a performer, and they need audience. This is what I think (maybe completely wrong, since I am just a new father): When they did something really good, we need to be the audience and tell him we love it and he is doing great. When he does something unreasonable, we need to tell them also. When he cries just to get what he wants, to disappear (with the right safety protection) may be the best solution. |
| 51 |
Update about Yifan teaching kids could be so hard...i dislike kid who tries to overpower us adult...and i m also clueless on how to control them.. |

Olympic is about Competition and Happiness I am also upset about these two things (1. Keeping the real singer behind just because she does not look soooo good 2. Fake broad cast of fire works). Is it in the right spirit of olympics? For me Olympics can not be compared to movies and drams. Common, this is some thing real to bring the spirit and help the people of different countries to come together for better understanding. Does any country ask some beautiful faces to participate in games even though they don't have talent or ask a beatiful person to receive the medals in place of athletes just because that athlete is not looking good? In that case Olympics will become a skin show instead of talent show. These two events completely changed my opinion of Olympics being organised in China |
| 49 |
Olympic is about Competition and Happiness also fake 56 ethnic kids... in fact not fake kids, but there were all Han dress like ethnic minorities... http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/othersports/olympics/2561979/Beijing-Olympics-Ethnic-children-exposed-as-fakes-in-opening-ceremony.html |

Where to Study Chinese, Beijing or Shanghai? Hi all, I am Tony Chu from the Netherlands, I had the same problem as you, only I was also looking for a job as well because I want to settle here in Shanghai... During my search to a language school here in Shanghai I have been to many schools to try out one of their classes to have a good idea about their offer and to compare the schools, because of course I want to get the best for the money I am paying to learn Chinese. As I have said already I was also looking for a job here, one of the schools which I liked very much : " BBR languages" had really good Chinese courses and as a plus for me, they were also looking for a new employee.. I made a good deal with them and now I am working here and as a extra I get the Chinese courses as well included my salary.. But anyway, for you all, I can really recommend this language institute, not just because I am working here, nice that I found a suitable job of course, but even if I haven't got a job here I would still have chosen for this language institute... Anyway, please take a look on their website if you are interested or feel free to contact me! Greetings, Tony Chu |

Update about Yifan It's better than beating a child. Not what us asian kids are used to from our parents' generation! But it's very important to establish a sense of authority and respect without the children fearing you. |
| 43 |
Update about Yifan My mother said I had temper tantrums when I was very little and would bang my head against the floor. She was so upset that she ran out of the room. Apparently that worked, because I soon stopped crying when there was no audience. So whenever I did that, she just walked away and soon I stopped having those tantrums. But we know a 15 year old (who is Chinese, I am not) who still has those tantrums. I think it happens when kids are treated so well by their parents that they expect to get everything they want. At some point even their loving parents cannot give them everything, and they can't stand it. I was treated too well by my mother (in the beginning) and the 15 year old (boy) is still over-indulged. I think it is very hard for parents who naturally want to give their children everything. |

Lang Ping's American Volleyball Team Beat China I attended a Japan-Venezuela volleyball match on Saturday, and the "go-away" noise was very loud whenever the Japanese team served (Jianshuo, by the way, this is often called "booing" in English - by onomatopoeia). Regardless of the terrible history, I don't believe booing the athletes shows respect for their 4+ years of preparation, and reflects extremely poorly on the host country. |

Day Like This - Another Day Hi Mark, I don't know exactly what visa is required, but I don't think train travel requires anything different from normal travel (say air travel). Beggars in China and People's Attitude Having just returned from my trip to China and Hong Kong, I am shocked by the number of beggars that have obviously been disabled by thugs / gangs. I am chinese but live in the UK. Every 4 years I return to China and Hong Kong and I am even more shocked that nothing has been done about this in this time. I have 'researched' the subject of Chinese Disabled Beggars with my relatives, both young and very old. It is their belief that these people were sold when they were children. The parents have been duped to think that they've sold their child to a factory boss when infact he is part of a gang that 'recruits' children for begging. To ensure maximum sympathy, these children are beaten half to death and have either a limb or two cut off or have bones broken and reset in a deformed / twisted position. To see an elderly gentleman, probably in his 80's begging with both his legs twisted around his back and the heels of his feet touching his shoulders on a makeshift skateboard is heart wrenching. To think that he has probably been begging all his life for these gangs. How scared must he had been when he was 'sold'? How much pain did he go through when they broke both of his legs and tied them behind his back? Please take a minute to think about this. I am asking you to think about this as whilst I saw this elderly man, who never looked up always looking down at his plastic bowl to collect money, at least several hundred people passed him from all walks of life, the young, the old, the rich and the poor. Many tourists also walked past with just a fleeting glance. Not one person actually paid attention to him it was as if he was invisible. You know, this person was once a bouncing baby, a child that laughed and played, a person that has emotions. Why is it that because his is a disabled beggar he becomes invisible? Is everyone scared to go near him? I bet that this elderly gentleman has had no one even speak to him for decades and in the evening, he is spoken to by his thug for the money in return for half a bowl of rice, enough to keep him alive for another day's begging and beaten daily. If this was you and the whole world turned a blind eye, how would you feel? If you saw this person in your UK or USA high street begging for money, you wouldn't turn a blind eye would you, you would help him. This beggar still has feelings and this beggar is still a person. I am so angry that the chinese government turn a blind eye too. Until approximately 10-12 years ago child abuse in the UK was also ignored until one person recognised the extent of this and did something about it. Nowadays in the UK, child abuse is taken so seriously that even teachers can't check childrens heads for lice. OK this is going a bit far but for all of you posting messages on this site, why can't WE ALL collectively do something about this. I don't know the answer but I do know that if I was a millionaire / wealthy businesman, I would use all the money and have the disabled beggars kidnapped from the streets of China / Hong Kong and have them put in a safe 'nursing' home in the UK where they would be fed and looked after around the clock. If anyone out there reading this think they can make a change, please please please let me know. As I said earlier, I don't know what the answer is but the answer is to not continue to turn a blind eye. Thank you for reading. |

Using Contact Lenses Hey my name is Sam. I just got contact lenses today, and I looked up, "Is it normal to be scared to put in contact lenses?" on google and I got a bazillion hits. I spent 83907408743 hours in the optical doctor's office, and I STILL haven't gotten it. But everyone does, so just... hang in there, bud! |

Day Like This - Another Day We are going away on a vacation in a few weeks, Jian Shuo, and I will "think you with us" while we relax and enjoy meeting new and interesting people...in Norway! And Italy!! I am very excited. It will not be the kind of vacation you need though. I think you must come to Hawaii sometime when we are there in February. That is a place where you cannot help but relax. Enjoy the rest of your weekend :-) |

Olympic is about Competition and Happiness @Phil: Thanks for your recomendations. Interesting read. I guess someone was trying to stir things up. But I still think it was a bad idea to put up a girl with a faked voice. I think the movie "Hair Spray" would have been terrible had the directors replaced Travolta's voice with Babara Streisand. Yeah, there were some debate on the faked voice of Audrey Hepburn in "My Fair Lady" but the movie was made in 1963 ! Anyways, I don't think Lin Miaoke was beautiful at all, she was reminds me of Chucky. It would have been so much better had she used her own voice. So what if it's not perfect ? It's human, and frankly more endearing. What we got in the end is a creepy face with a plastered smile. |

Lang Ping's American Volleyball Team Beat China @stephen, you are right. That was a very sad story, and it happened many time in China in the 1980s and 1990. I hope in the future when China's society develops, it can avoid such thing. |

Lang Ping's American Volleyball Team Beat China I was disappointed when the Chinese fencing team member refused to shake hands with the Polish team after their loss in the semi-finals :( http://www.fencing.net/forums/thread37605-3.html#post721552 The Polish team, on the other hand, was very sportsmanlike. http://www.monstersandcritics.com/sport/olympics2008/news/article_1424332.php/Polish_fair_play_ensures_France_takes_gold_in_mens_epee__Roundup_ |

Lang Ping's American Volleyball Team Beat China For a non-Chinese one of the striking facts about this Olympics is how many super athletes from other countries have Chinese coaches. This shows that Chinese around the world are great. Of course it is common to have foreign coaches in, say, soccer, but the Chinese coaches are particularly noticeable and all are doing their part to emphasize how great the Chinese are. I also noticed how many Chinese-Americans have reached the Olympic level in certain sports. They too are contributing to a great impression of China. |

Olympic is about Competition and Happiness Thanks Phil, i wanted to make a POLITICAL statement, that's what i wanted. I wanted to say something POLITICAL about it, like "i strongly condemn the idea of lip-synching, esp to these 2 girls( the song itself taken aside) and someone must take responsibility instead of justifying it". But that turns out POLITICAL anyway, so let's not talk about it. Let's talk about something that's not POLITICAL. 'POLITICAL' sucks. Who invented this word anyway? What does it mean? BTW, i don't hate censorship. I've got proxies. What will hatred lead you? More hatred, and worse, NO HARMONY. We 1,300,000,000 harmonious people(oh NO, make that 1,299,999,999) need it to protect our COLLECTIVE CHINESE PEOPLE to survice this INTERNET ICE AGE, waiting to be COLLECTED. I'll stop before this turns out political again. |
| 6 |
Olympic is about Competition and Happiness @mac I hate censorship too. But I think this issue is different. Adults are using the little girls to make political statements. Even worse, they (think times.co.uk) created descriptions like "crooked teeth", "fat", "bad looks" etc, which were never said by Chen Qigang. I wish all the moralists (including me :-) ) shut up on this issue, for the children's sake. The negative image was already widely spread. The goal was met. What else do you want? |

Olympic is about Competition and Happiness If I had a chance to sing at the open ceremony when I was young, I would be very proud. I asked many of my friends, they all felt the same way. I think the way children think is very simple. If I were Yang Peiyi, I might never think about why people didn't show my face. I could just feel proud of myself until the whole adult world keeps telling me that 'girl, you are unfairly treated'. Then what? Of course, I am not Yang Peiyi. It's just what I would feel in that situation. |
