| The naming discussion above has been fascinating. I spend a lot of time on the Net but I have never messed with blogs. I found this one by coincidence while looking for an article on teaching correct American English intonation. Having taught several years in China I always wondered about why the Chinese take English names. It certainly does help to identify the gender and to address the person as Mr or Ms if one is corresponding by e-mail or snail mail. I too found that many of my Chinese students had difficulty pronouncing the name they had chosen or had been given. Now, it happens that when I am in a Spanish-speaking environment, I choose to use Esteban insted of Steven. |
