| Actually, for me (an American-born and American-raised Chinese person), menus were one of the first things I could read. Growing up, I was very familiar with words for various dishes, because you *have* to be able to talk about Chinese food, when you're growing up around a lot of Chinese people. And a lot of the characters for food are simple characters - meat, vegetables, noodles, rice, etc... (there are exceptions, of course). So, after I moved here, and was improving my reading skills, menus were actually something that gave me confidence and helped me to continue learning to read. |
