| Great to see so many people interested in learning the dialect. I'm from Shanghai, but grew up in Australia, but I speak it at home. I'm surprised that all of my friends who came here when they were 10yrs old, and all of my cousins in Shanghai, can no longer speak it. Once they start school, it's all mandarin. I'm quite sad about that, but I guess it means that maybe there really isn't a future for shanghainese. If the next generation of natives can't understand or speak it, then foreigners might as well learn mandarin. Another trend i've noticed is that there are so many people working/living in shanghai who come from all over china. So basically businesses, services etc carry out their work more and more in mandarin. |
