There are many ways to measure the expensiveness of a city, let me highlight three of them: 1. Given Shanghai's rapidly growing Westernization, the city is likely to drop further in global cost of living differential tables. This is relevant for expatriation consideration. 2. In absolute terms, it ranks far below the most expensive cities in the world. 3. Only in relative terms, i.e. if you measure the ratio between local price level and local income level, you can argue that Shanghai is expensive. |
