21 Using Contact Lenses

HI, Everyone. Thank you so much for all the advise. I have had my contacts now for 6 days and I have only had them in for two hours the first day that the doctor put them in for me. However with all your advise I will go home and stand in front of the mirror for another hour and keep trying.

Thanks so much

18 Where are You?

Hallo, my name is Andrea. I am a psychologist in a childrens hospital in Stuttgart (600 000 people), Germany. 30 Years before I have studied Chinese at the university of Tübingen, but I never had the opportunity to go to China... Now will my husband go to Hangzhou (and Shanghai) tomorrow. He will meet people of the BOSCH plant there, because he is the chairman of the workers council (Betriebsratsvorsitzender) in the German plant in Leinfelden/Stuttgart.
I am excited to hear about the China of today.
Today we had a big manifastation against the government in Germany, also in Stuttgart, Munich, Dortmund and Berlin!
Many greetings, Andrea

17 Living Cost in Shanghai

Hi there,

I am about to choose a one year contract in either Beijing or Hangzhou. Is one location more appealing then the other? Any insight? Also the contract in Hangzhou only offfers 2000RMB for housing, is this enough to provide a comfortable appartment that is fully furnished? The one in Beijing offers paid housing. I would really app. any input.

15 PVG: From Pudong Airport to Nanjing

Hi! I'm going to Shanghai on Okt. 21, then will go to Yiwu the next day. My questions are: How do I go to Yiwu? By bus or train? Which is more convenient? Do you have their rates. If by train? Which train station? Is it hard to go by train? How long will the trip take me? Where do I buy the tickets? Are there different types of seats? We want to go to yiwu comfortably, meaning, we want reserved seats ( do they have them?)
If by bus, where do we take the bus? And how much will it cost? Can I also book for seats on my way back from Yiwu to Shanghai? I really appreciate all the information that you can give me. Thank you very much.

14 Chinese Blogger Conference

Jianshuo, Sorry for having to use your blogspace for clarifications on the conference. But thank you for providing such space for us to talk.

I guess you also have some good ideas/tips for the conference. Hope you'd have a chance to share them with the conference organizing team. You know, they have regular meetings on-line and sometimes off-line. It'd be great if you can join in once to share your thoughts. (I know you're busy, so I won't dare to ask for too much of your time.)

13 Chinese Blogger Conference

Austin, It was actually all my fault. I meant to email you back but I was away in the last couple of weeks and didn't get around to do that when I came back.

I apologized for not having mentioned to you that we had a speaker lined up (though not 100% confirmed) for the cross-cultural conversation (of which you also proposed) at the time of your inquiry.

From what I understand, the session on cross cultural conversation is a brain storming session. Rebecca and other "panelists" representing major geographical areas who will be facilitating the discussions, will only make very brief remarks on the topic and leave most of the session for everyone to talk and to brainstorm strategies for cross-boundary communications. So for sure, there will be room for you to share your insights on the topic. You, and indeed everyone, are of course welcome to join the conference. Registration will become available soon - so be sure to check back the conference website in next week or so for details.

12 My Own Web Based RSS Reader

Jianshuo:

That's very nice! How much time did spend setting it up?

I am wanted to put up a web-based RSS aggregator for Chinese feeds too. The problem is the Chinese blogs I read come from both the mainland (which uses simplified Chinese and often encoded in "GB") and Hong Kong (which uses traditional Chinese and encoded in "Big5"). It's currently impossible to put both mainland, Hong Kong and Taiwan blogs together on the same page at this point until I can find a way to automatically convert these codes at the back-end into UTF. I can only hope more Chinese blogs can adopt "UTF" code.

11 Personal Social Network Management

It's interesting you mentioned about mapping the social network among family (including extended family) members.

I, for one, would think it would be very useful to have a tool just for family networking since it is so hard to keep track of what my cousins, aunt and uncles are up to; who are the new additions to the extended family, etc. The challenge is to get the older generation onto the internet.

10 Returned from Huizhou (Huang Shan) Trip

This is very nice. Did you join a tour or went by yourself?
I wonder how easy/difficult it is to get there.
The life depicted in the wood carving (in the very last picture) looks very interesting.

9 PVG: Ramada Hotel Opens at Pudong Airport

I am just curious, did it specify who exactly can write an approval letter for your lincense. I was thinking perhaps you can just write one yourself with the company stamp on it. Or better still, with some of your colleagues likely to get a driver's lincense, have the company create a template for this kind of letter and let employees customize and print them on demand. And isn't ma fan (troublesome) to ask your employer for a copy of the business lincense? Oh well, this is a legacy of the old "dan wei" culture. Things don't change overnight.

8 Living Cost in Shanghai - Part II

This is an excellent site! Thank you for your valuable information, comments and insight. I will be travelling to Shanghai next month for the first time and will be teaching there for a year. The information that you provided here will help me tremendously. Thank you once again and keep up the great work!

Best of luck,
AB

PS. Btw, do you know of any spa's (reasonable rates) and salons in Shangahi that are REASONABLE? Also, how about GYM memberships and rates? Can you recommend any? Just wondering.... BTW, if you have any suggestions of your favorite spots, please feel free to suggest them. Your input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

5 PVG: From Pudong Airport to Nanjing

The first map looks really nice.

Personally, I prefer train than long-distance bus. Train ride is more comfortable than a bumpy bus ride. The only thing I dislike is the long queue at the Shanghai Railway Station ticket lines. It would be cool if one day people can buy or book train tickets from a machine or mobile phone.

That's quite a distance from Shanghai?!?
By the way, I wonder what is it like to bike on a highway? Is there a bike lane on the highway? Do bikes have to pay to get on to the highway?
