"Love China" Blooms on MSN Messenger I found this whole LOVE CHINA thing so lame. Can people be more creative in expressing their patriotism/nationalism? It is NOT COOL when 80% of the people on the MSN/Windows Live Messenger list are doing same thing. Just a few more thoughts I have: 1) If the Chinese are so proud of themselves, why do they place so much emphasis on a Western cultural event/creation - the modern Olympics? The Chinese should just say 'Fuck It, we will have no more of this shit - we will NOT host the your (Western) 2008 games, we will create our own China Games (but the world is welcome to join)', if they feel that they had been slighted by Western media (by linking the games and politics). But by the same token, it is the Chinese government that politicize the games, by using the games to showcase China to the world as a new superpower. Investing billions of dollars into Beijing for a 2.5 week event doesn't make much economic sense, unless the goal is project China's new stature to the world. I don't buy that showcasing the Chinese culture argument, or doing it for the spirit of sports. The games have always been used, rightly or wrongly, as a political tool. Therefore the Chinese people should NOT make such a fuss about the Western media politicizing the games, when the original intent of hosting the 2008 games was a political decision by the Chinese government. 2) There are posters here saying that England and France wanted to sabotage China's 2008 Olympics Games by not providing security thus allowing Tibetan protestors to interrupt the flame relay. - First, the flame relay run is really only a symbolic thing of a global party (i.e. Olympic Games) - that's it - the flame doesn't signify anything other than a symbol of a global party. The IOC is NOT a political body. Therefore why should the English or French government (using their citizen's tax dollar) foot the bill for providing extra security to protect a symbol for a party to be held in another country ??? - Second, unlike in China, in the USA, England, and France, people do have the right to protest (unfortunately sometimes those protest do get ugly - but that's the price of freedom of expression). Should the USA, England, France, and elsewhere suspend their citizen's right to freedom of expression while the Olympic torch passes through their cities? I mean, there were much bigger and uglier protests when it came to IMF / World Bank / Economic Summits meetings -- the right to freedom of expression was not suspended in those instances - which had much more importance to the world than the 2.5 week party known as the Olympic games. 3) The talk of boycotts of each other's products are just SILLY. America and Europe will continue buying made-in-China products because the price is just irresistible. Well-off Chinese will continue to queue-up at LV, Gucci, Prada, and other top luxury brand name stores in Shanghai and Hong Kong to buy these European brands. 4) I really do think that the Chinese government, through its controlled media, is stirring up anti-Western sentiments in China. The media in China is creating this sense that the Western world is against China. I can tell you that this is not true - far from it. The majority of Americans are politically apathetic - they care about more who will win the "Next American Idol" than who will win the next American presidency ... and human rights in China and Tibetan status in China are waaay down in their (majority of Americans) list of concerns. Of course there is always the loud minority - the protestors / liberal do-gooders - which is what the Chinese media is reporting / what the Chinese government allows its citizen to read/see through its controlled internet. |

Are American Economically Family-Independent american society might have be the driving force from 1960-1990's...but I would suggest that its now fallen down and that the American family such as mom and dad are playing a larger role in their kids development. (I suspect mostly via financial, pay for university, deposit on a home). Varies Wildly. a. |

Why Things in China is Cheap? Manufacturing is always chasing after the lower cost of labor.so factories move from one to another for lower production cost. wherever we develop our economy, we must take full use of our advantage. |

Magic Wall at CEIBS what is the expected simple living cost in Shanghai? does the school provide dormitory? I am considering to apply provided it is within my budget. |

I Found a Bug - in my Soup Well bugs in soup seem to be normal if your living in northwest china, but generally they are deep fried and quite tasty. The humble Cicada (big and crunchy is a local favorite) I prefer the bugs on the dish, deep fried in chili, not attempting to run away my pickled veggies. :) a. |

Living Cost in Shanghai Hi Could someone provide some advice about the level of air pollution in Shanghai (Pudong). Is it atrocious or manageable? I am considering relocating to Shanghai, and am not keen to pick up any respiratory problems. Of course there will be good days and bad days according to the winds, but as a matter of course is there a dark pall of smoke over everything with pongy air, or is it much less than this? Thanks. Andrew |

Polution in Shanghai I'm getting older I cannot think that I shall be alive to see the destruction of our planet by the pollution be it from Europe, China or The USA. I worry about the future for the young, so much so that I no longer own or drive a car, I walk, my wife and I recycle every thing that we can, and use the absolute minimum of power, why light a whole house just to read a book, we use a 20w bulb. I hate the oppression of workers in the far East, if we in the west did not support these 'slave' driven manufacturers until the workers are given a decent slice of the cake, of course the goods produced are cheap, but think, the price we have to pay is low, in fact these 'cheap' goods are costing the earth, in CO2 emissions and all the other pollutants thrown out into the air and the sea. How long before we kill the planet. So a plea from an old man, keep up the pressure it is your world I am sorry that my generation may have messed it all up for uou. |

Pudong Airport Maglev in Depth Yes - from the news available, the accident appears to have resulted from a collision between the train and a maintenance vehicle that, clearly, should not have been on the track. It is a real tragedy. I hope the best for those people involved. Many maglev sites say "How can we have an accident? Our systems are intrinsically safe". No matter how many separate, safe systems you design, unless you design the entire project - track, vehicles, access, trackside facilities, operating environment etc etc - as one interconnected system, you can only hope to achieve the safety levels you are aiming for. It is an unfortunate demonstration that risk management is a holistic process. |

Using Contact Lenses My uncle has these week contacts that he let me practice with. I'm not even sure if you're supposed to do that... anyway, I was able to put it in my right eye 6 times and in my left eye once. Every time I did it though there was a small fold in the middle of the contact. Is it because it's too big for my eye? So when I get my own it'd be just right and not have that fold? Or am I just putting it in wrong... ? |

Using Contact Lenses So I went to the eye doctor yesterday and naturally, she was unable to put the contacts in. But all of the hopeful things I read here are defenitly helping. Due to my friend's advice he said that what he does is (for the right eye): 1. Take the middle finger of your left hand and pull up on the top eyelid. 2. Take the middle finger of your right hand and pull down on the bottom eyelid. 3. Look far left, trying to focus on some random object. 4. Then place it in. I don't have my contacts, or contacts to practice with so I'm kind of just here practicing. I just do that routine and brush against the white of my eye. The eye doctor said to brush your eyelashes and wave your finger close to your eye so you'll eventually be de-sensitized. The worst part of the whole process though is when you have a person waiting right next to you trying to put the contact in, except you are keeping them there because you can't get over it. Sometimes I'd prefer to do things alone, ya know? Well anyway good luck to all of you strugglers out there!! I know a bunch of people who have had troubles with contacts, then have eventually mastered it. |

Water Mellon for Summer I would not be surprised if a LOT of the surplus walmart stuff from Korea is on a boat right this minute bound for walmart shanghai. I would expect that when closing a store you have to dispose of all the stock. Since no one in korea wants the stock it might be an interesting thing to keep your eye on the chinese stock to see if there are any korean stickers or duty/customs marks on it. Anyway if if WALMART is that souless in Shanghai then they are in for a hard time as well. A. |

Im sure there are lots of little wonder islands to visit. You have some really nice friends. Those boats just drink the gas :) Enjoy your trip to USA. A. |

Wifi Hotspot Competion Becomes Hot One day, I ran into a coffee shop. The owner told me they have a HotSpot. Pointing to a black box. They told me to insert 3 euro to it and the little printer by it print me a slip. On it I found a Password and URL address. I surf for an hour and it cost me only 3 metal. Good! I also found on the slip it has a web site name. I guess it is the provider or something www.com2000.com.hk |

Inside Pudong Airport Maglev Train I took the MagLev from LongYang to PVG when I left Shanghai and had no problem with luggage, the train was nearly full (mostly tourists doing a round trip) and it was a great experience. Next time I'm in Shanghai I'm taking a video camera and will record the trip. Very strange taking the taxi from Najing Road all the way out to LongYan to get on an "airport train", though. However, I've spent more than 20 mins in a Taxi trying to get across London for the Heathrow "Express" so it's not too bad. Shame the hours aren't longer. I arrived in Shanghai about 23:00 after flight delays and ended up shelling out RMB500 for a hotel car as I was too exhausted to try and explain (gesture and point) my destination to a taxi driver. |

Pudong Airport Maglev in Depth Took to Maglev from Loyang Rd to Pudong Airport today (27.5.2004) - it was amazing to be zipping along at 430 kph overtaking cars and trucks as if they we standing still. Made the Airport Express in Hong Kong feel pretty tame in comparision :) If it went right into the heart of Shanghai (say, to Renmin square) it would be fantastic - are there any plans to extend the line ? Helpful tip: We asked Reception at our hotel to phone ahead to make sure it would still be operating by the time we got there (last train was 5:28pm today) as we were leaving late in the day... |
