7 Chinese Characters

Jianshuo is quite right, dialects in china vary greatly from region to region..esp south or southeast dialects..people find it hard to understand eachother even they are just from neighbor towns...and people there in general speak a kind of manderin with southern accent...sounds pretty sweet and gentle esp when girls speak ! ...

To master any language is not a piece of cake I think ... as long as you work hard !!... of course with the help of interest you'll manage it faster ^ ^ ...

What I conclude from many complaints about the difficulty of chinese learning are in general 2 things .. 1, the pronounciation is hard (mainly because of the 4 tones)... 2, the characters are hard to remember ... these are the 2 main heavy tasks you need to handle well as a beginner ... as for the grammar ... compared with grammars of other languages ... chinese grammar is really not such a pain ... trust me, you'll be much relieved as you go on and on with chinese ... :)

5 Weekend at San Jose

Bravo! Mr. Couper,

I really appreciate the way you try to educate the ruleless people in Shanghai. However, I wonder if it is effective? Recently, my parents and I joined a tour group to tour east coast in USA, and about 90% of the tour members in our group are from mainland China, they are good folks in general, but when it comes to general common senses, it seems that they just don't have it. They don't have any sense of lining up for getting into any place, for example: we had to stay in line to get into the Empire State Building, and the line is very long, but those people from mainland China would push you from behind in hope that they can get in faster. It annoyed us very much.

I want China to be a great country, and don't know how to help, I reported to the tour guide about the tour members' no manner issue, such as spitting at anywhere, or cut in the line, etc. "Hopeless" is the answer I got from the tour guide.

Jian Shuo, I hope you don't get offended about my comment, I am doing this out of good intention and really wish through your popular blog, we can let more Chinese know that things need to be changed for better future.

3 Not Perfect English is Fine, So does Correction

hi, Wang Jian shuo, you handled it with grace. I am impressed.
even native english speakers at times make mistake.
Some English people think of Americans as pollutting the language.
Some American people can't stand the obsolete register of Britons.
so what? the world needs differences. The sensible thing we can do is to make the best from the criticism, as you've already done, brilliantly.

1 Hire a Taxi? Avoid Rainy Friday

JianShuo,

Do not stop writing on this site, I just discovered your site last month, and I have been telling all my friends and family members about your blog, because I enjoyed reading it. I think you just need a good night rest, then you will feel refreshed.

As far as questions regarding Shanghai City, we have one for you: What do you think about the Sun Qiao area? Have you visited there before? Is it really going to be developed as it planned?

By the way, from your write up about Marriott in Shanghai, I see you took a picture from Marriott hotel looking out, and our place is happen to be included in your photo, we never have such good shot of it ourself (thanks for the good job.)

I used to work at Santa Clara Marriott hotel, California. I agreed with you that Marriott is not that well known in China. Mr. Marriott will thank you for explaining why.

How did the May 15th meeting go at Starbucks? We wish we were there.
