Still Working with IPowerWeb Well i just read some of these posts from '2004 and here it is '2008 and they still suck. Tried to install osdate fifty times and contacted tech support at least 5. Have one of the author's login to my control panel and still had no clue where the php paths are really set. Even ftp'ing a php script to show paths it's a real nightmare. These people are so stupid after chatting the last time the tech said "well you should contact your webmaster". I said well idiot should i contact myself? These people have no clue how to run a server. The domain on one server, mysql database on another server, php on another server which is unknown. And when you a user is logged into the database yet another server. So i abandoned the idea for the moment with osdate and tried dolphin software. This program's install is much more sophisticated showing all the parameters on install and editable. Only error i got was the path to php. I ran the php script and got the path and verified it with ipower techs. I retyped the same path in the install script and it took. On the third page of the install it timed out just like osdate install. And no errors in the log file. Obviously the path is incorrect or lost because of their paths keep changing or redirected to other servers and timed out. I give up with this host. Talking with idiots when you call or chat with them. Do yourself a favor and forget them. Go here and check out a better hosting company as I did. http://www.edomainnameregister.com |

Using Contact Lenses I've got weird situation coming up. I wear a hard contact lens in my right eye to correct astigmatism(sp?) and I also wear glasses to correct the vision in my left eye ( lots of scar tissue because of a cornea transplant, so no contact for that eye). Anyhow, on 1-19 I have to have surgury on my right elbow and will have to wear a non-removable splint for a week. I won't have much use of my hand. Any suggestions on how I will clean, insert, and remove the contact in my right eye, with just my non-dominant hand? I don't have anyone to do it for me. I did have the removeable splint that goes on after the non-removeable one made recently so I could see how limited my movement would be. Pretty limited....... Thanks, Bill |

Chinatowns in U.S. Either the New York Times or the Boston Globe (two major American newspapers) did an article about the Chinatown buses about how they have cut their ticket prices so much to compete that they are now almost totally unable to make a profit on their businesses. Personally, I think riding on the Chinatown buses is fun and more convenient than going to the unpleasant Boston and NYC bus stations. But try to see some small towns in America while you're there -- they are as different from NYC and Boston as villages in China are from Shanghai and Beijing! |

Exchange RMB to/from Foreign Currencies P.S. There are now strict foreign currency exchange controls in place. I am not sure what the actual limit is, but it is not extremely high. You must show your passport (for foreigners) when exchanging foreign currency into RMB and the bank files an exchange report with the People's Bank. There is a daily limit and an overall weekly / monthly / lifetime limit. I don't think these controls will be lifted anytime soon because of all the speculation about a pending adjustment to the official exchange rates. |

Just use your RMB credit card outside China and after you return, you can deposit RMB to balance your card." This is true ONLY in Hong Kong. A RMB credit card will NEVER work outside of Greater China (excluding Taiwan). Foreigners looking to obtain a credit card from any Chinese bank have a VERY difficult time ahead of them. Unless you have establish extremely solid credit in China already, many banks will outright deny you a card. If you are VERY lucky, they will issue you a card after you deposit double the card limit as a security deposit. |

ICBC - A Customer's Experience Actually, I have had excellent experiences with ICBC. Yes, however, there are long lines sometimes, but this happens in EVERY bank in China with the exception of China Merchants Bank and all the rest of the distressed non-government banks. I am a foreigner and applied for a Chinese credit card. Can you imagine the stupid looks you get when a foreigner applies for a credit card at a Chinese bank? Most banks will approve the application, but NOT China Merchants Bank. Their policy is that they will never issue a card to a foreigner. This is discrimination! The other government banks vary in their responses. Bank of China is the most conservative and, quite frankly, often stupid. ICBC was reasonable. And after I purchased a house with a mortgage from ICBC and paid it off after only 4 years, ICBC has been very, very nice to me. Several years ago I purchased my first house with a mortgage from Bank of China. First of all, their entire mortgage process was moronic. Then, after paying off the loan 13 years early with never a late payment, they "approved" my credit card with a limit of 1,000 RMB. However, they told me I had to deposit 10,000 as security. Bank of China sucks! |
