24 How I drive in Shanghai - Part II

Amen Chas...

In Chicago. There is a right on red law. BUT YOU HAVE TO STOP FIRST, then you can proceed if the crossway is clear of pedestrians or other vehicles crossing the intersection.

23 How I Drive in Shanghai?

WJS... I am sorry... no I am not. FOLLOW THE RULES when you are in THE downtown part of the city.

I have always had a alot of respet for you. But your post comes across as ignorant and just plain dumb.

It makes no sense.

I thougt that maybe, just may be, this was a forum where local drivers could be a bit more educated.

I guess not...

22 How I Drive in Shanghai?

WJS... that is crazy! Your exuses just don't make any sense.

So you think that because that you can't trust the driver behind you it is OK NOT to give me the RIGHT OF WAY as a pedestrian?

Shame on you.

Explain... because I just don't get it.

21 Reasons of Bad Traffic in Shanghai

WJS... I know that you have been to the US a few times and this might be a good forum to educate your vistors to this site who drive cars but have never left China.

What is the difference between driving in China and the US when it comes to respecting the pedestrian's right of way at an intesection? You should know.

I am from Chicago and have lived here for 19 years. It just seems to be getting worse.

I don't like to be afraid to cross the street. But I am.

I went back home last year and it took me a while to get used to not being afraid to cross the street when I had the RIGHT OF WAY at the "Walk" sign.

I felt stupid... because my friends back home would ask me why? All I could say was it was a "China thing".

I Love Shanghai... but is this the image that I want my friends to know about this great city?

Tell your fellow friends who drive to respect our right to cross the street at the designated places (legally) and ask them to tell their friends too.

Because I don't know of any foreign freinds who do not think the same. It is not safe. It leaves a black eye on Shanghai. I don't want that.

20 Reasons of Bad Traffic in Shanghai

OK... but back to my first comment.

Why must I be afraid to cross the street when I have the "Walk" signal?

Most of the comments seemed to hit it on the head.

I hope that some of you who have posted here and drive a car will respect my right and the law to let me cross the street when YOU... NOT ME must yield to me my right of way.

Otherwise... you are a piece of.... *&$#

IT'S THE LAW. Go back and read your "rules of the road book" issued by the same guys who "gave" you your diver's license.

19 Reasons of Bad Traffic in Shanghai

FACT: Vehicles (cars, buses, bicycles, mororcyles, etc.) MUST YIELD TO THE PEDESTRIAN when the vehicle is at a red light and the pedestrin has the "Walk" signal. This is the law in China.

WJS... I am curious, do you follow it as a driver?

Do you wait patiently for the pedestrian or do you cut him off as you are making a right on red?

18 Should I Drive in Shanghai?

Funny thing is that it is the LAW that drivers MUST yield the right of way to pedestrians who are crossing the street when the pedestrian has the "Walk" signal. A few months ago I was hit by a taxi in Shanghai. Even if you are carefull, sh*t still happens. Why can't the drivers in Shanghai have a bit more respect for those of us who are walking across (not jay-walking) the street? CJ

15 Fake Market in Shanghai?

WJS... I mentioned a few weeks ago that many of the shops "were moving or moving to" the Science and Technology Museum subway stop. You had replied that you did not see it.

I went back there again a few days ago and it is definitely not only there, but bigger than when I last visited it.

When you ge to to Century Square enter the NORTH subway station entrance (the South one leads yuou to the "legit" part of the undeerground mall). When you get down the escalator you can't miss it. Lot's of foreigners doing some shopping and the touts trying to sell fake watches, bags, jeans, golf clubs and the whole nine yards.

It certainly is nicer than the old market on Xiang Yang Lu because it is underground and airconditioned. Also it is not nearly as crowded as the old place.

Check it out the next time you are there on a weekend... just follow the foreigners :-)

12 Top 3 Issues of Shanghai Tourism

That's easy...

1. Get ride of the beggars, people trying to sell you things and people who pass out business cards.

2. Stop littering.

3. Get drivers to give the right-of-way to pedestrians when, by law, they are supposed to but don't AND to get pedestrians to stop jaywalking.

Three very simple things to really change how tourist view the city I love, Shanghai.

10 Interesting Photos of Pudong

Those "strange roads" are actually foot/bicycle paths that can be found along the A20 Highway and the Maglev. I should know, I have ridden on many of them. As best as I can make out from reading the signs in those area they are for agricultural research and development. Also, they are great places for a bike ride.

7 Traffic in Shanghai

A little known fact... Shanghai was the first city in the world to install traffic stop lights. It was installed by the British. The jaywalking problem was so bad that the British had to do something about it. Hence, the first traffice stop light in the world.

6 Traffic in Shanghai

Shanghai could learn a lot from Nanjing. About a year ago I was there and the countdown clocks at the intersections made me feel so much safer than Shanghai trying to cross a street as a pedestrian.. Nanjing stop lights also make it very clear when you can go left or right (as a driver). It does make the traffic move more smoothly.

Yes, I know that Shanghai is starting to do the "countdown" clocks. But you gotta know, The Shanghai drivers have a different menatlity and it will take them time to learn it.

I have also noticed that since the Shenyang (with the MBA and lost her job) bitch who got busted... many Shanghainese are becoming aware of why jaywalking is just not right.

10 days in detention courtsey of your local PSB, Not fun.

3 Pudong Airport Maglev in Depth

On another note about the Maglev... I have seen this myself on my many biking rides along the Maglev line.

There are about 100 yds/100 mtrs (think American football field) on either side of the Maglev track that are beautifully landscaped with a dedicated service road (which are fenced in to keep folks like me from riding on it).

I have yet to see a house that was within this 100 yds/100 mtrs right of way zone. But... there are many, many, many homes, farms and one church that are just on the edge of the Maglev right of way zone.

There is just no way to run the line into the city directly unless they could put it underground. I just don't think that the cost for doing so is possible.

2 Pudong Airport Maglev in Depth

Why does the Maglev line end out at the Long Yang Lu subway station? I agree with many of you that the Maglev line should have gone down dowtown until you realize how loud the Maglev truley is (see my previous post).

You also have to remeber that this was first and foremost an experimental line.

So what do you do? Why not have it end one block away from the New Shanghai Expo Centre in Pudong. That is exactly what they did. That does make sense if you are an exhibitor or visitor to the many shows they host at the Expo Centre, that is, if you know that the Maglev exists.

Of course, with recent news that the line will be extended to Hangzhou is good news and this will become the first stop on the way to Hangzhou.

But trust me... you don't want this thing zooming by your home in downtown Shanghai.

1 Pudong Airport Maglev in Depth

I do believe that the reduced speed of the Maglev after 5:30 could be a "cost issue", and certainly not a "saftey issue", but it could very well be a "noise issue" as well.

I do quite a bit of biking in Pudong and one af my many destinations are various point along the Maglev route. I can tell you this, the Maglev is VERY LOUD (not F-1 loud, but still... VERY LOUD) when you are watching it race by as you are standing under or next to it. Heck, it is even loud where some farmers live near the tracks. I have checked this out.

I guess it would be kind of hard if you are a farmer in Pudong and trying to get some sleep until the Maglev's last run at 9:00. Most farmers go to bed early.

After 5:30 the Maglev is a bit less loud, somewhat like Chicago's El (think Blues Brothers movie).

Also of interesting note, when the Maglev is approaching you can hear the electrical coils ramp up to propel the Maglev with a very distinct zzzzzzzzzzzing sound.

Very cool indeed! CJ
