The focus of medias on the paris olympic torch events product, as every focus, the same consequencies: If you near by a wall, you just see one stone of that wall! I am very glad to discover that for some of you the innumerable focus of medias all around that world are not like walls crashing on your faces!
"Truth on this side of the mountain, lies on the opposite side"! We are differents, we are not clones! It's a good news!
All nations, all communities have dark and shames moments in their history; Instead of loosing time in throwing each others in the face these bad moments couldn't we stop recommanding boycotts or other similar sanctions which lead every time to conflicts?
My recommandation is:
First keep smiling,
Joke about yourself (plenty of subjects for the french i am!!)
And have a good week-end with your friends!

Dear Gentlemen,

This is a fascinating discussion. I can't tell you how glad I am glad to be able to voice myself on this forum. But I wonder if in fact this dialogue can be read in China. Does the average Chinese citizen have access to our conversations? I highly doubt it. So our dialogue, regardless of distortions, misquotes, and naivete, is only being read by people in the West.

I recently spoke with a young Chinese student studying abroad and she had very little knowledge of the "Tiananmen Massacre. But what was even more puzzling was the fact that she very little knowledge of "Rape of Nanking."

I myself tried to have a dialogue with other readers and posters at the China Daily (http://www.chinadaily.com.cn/), but every time I posted a comment, it was never printed. The information the Chinese government wants to share is biased. No question about it. But this is nothing new. This has been going on for decades. This bias is all the average flag-waving Chinese person knows.

One wonders if the Dalai Lama, (Nobel Peace Prize Laureate) and Spiritual Leader of Tibetans in Tibet and in exile, will truly have an open dialogue China, when China can't be honest with it's own people.

Insofar as the Dalai Lama not being a Spiritual Leader, Mr. Shen, with all due respect, you can only make such a bold but ill-informed judgement because you yourself are not a Buddhist.

many prayers of compassion to you all,
Chris

George,

You say, "My own view on Tibet is that Tibet is in her best interest to be part of China as an autonomous region. It's like the Native Indian's region/culture/governance model within the framework of the USA. They should have own rule of laws, religious freedom, commerce, government, and police, but not independence. Of course, I don't expect everyone can agree with me. Much like not everyone can agree that Native Indian should be part of the US."

I agree with you! And the Dalai Lama would agree with you too; it is what he has been saying all along.

Kevin,

You forget one important thing. China with the force of military might invaded and took over Tibet 1959. China came in and forced change onto Tibet people. And it still forces a heavy hand onto Tibetans. It is not Tibet any longer, not in the way it was before. You can argue that now is better for the average Tibetan person, but I would venture to say deep down inside each Tibetan's heart, that they would rather to lead their own lives, and have their spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, back with them -- just as you would if the situation were reversed.

If the Tibetans were all happy about their situation in Tibet, why would they defy the mighty all powerful Chinese government, and protest? Think about it.

all the best to you,
Chris

So, George, by your assessment, or at least by the author's assessment that you used in your post, there is little hope that this crisis can be resolved because of the way that the Chinese people view the Dalai Lama and Tibetans. That to me is very sad, very sad indeed. But, I myself will continue to hope to see that one day the Chinese people and the Tibetan people will come together. The Dalai Lama is a human being, just like President Hu Jintao. And they both want happiness, not for themselves but for their people; that is you and me. And I would never stop you from attaining happiness. Why would you and your government want to stop the Tibetan people from attaining happiness in their own way? This to me is madness. I wish you well.

Hello LoveWorld,

As you say sound scientific research is needed. And hopefully that research will ultimately lead to true dialogue. You say, "everyone's opinion is weighted equally." When can that truly take place between the Chinese leadership and the Tibetan leadership, just like you and I are having a dialogue? Only when there is real dialogue, only then do I think these two great cultures can meet and progress forward.

It is important to accept that cultural differences do matter. One culture is never better than the other, and that one culture should not force the other to change to suit an image they see of themselves. How boring the world would be if we all were the same. The people of Tibet are different from that of the people of China. They have hugely different cultures. At the same time they are all human beings, like everyone in the world, with the same hopes and fears and desires for happiness, and prosperity. These two people need to cooperate, to come together synergistically, or one will end up destroying the other -- which in my view is happening right now.

Respectfully,
Chris

You need to learn more about the suffering of a gentle, kind people by the hand of your Chinese government. I would say if you were a Tibetan, that you would be saying just the opposite of what you are now. It was not too long ago when China suffered at the hands of aggressors. Look at your history, now that China is getting stronger on the world stage it too has become aggressive and brutal. It seems the Chinese government wants the Tibetans to become Chinese. Why not leave them to lead their own lives. If they want to continue their traditions of as you say "slavery" then let them. That is their business not yours. It is the basis of freedom. But I don't think your country can do this. Remember this, all of the Chinese citizens that feel hurt by what the world's opinion is of your government is due to some truth, or else there would not be such a world outcry. And the sooner you as a Chinese citizen learn this truth, the sooner you can be responsible for a dialogue that must happen between the Tibetan people and the Chinese. Or you will go down in history as a nation that destroyed other people to achieve your greatness. This will always be a country's undoing in the long run. Just look at the history of the world to realize this, and stop being so afraid!

62 Using Contact Lenses

Hi All,

Contact lenses, Jeez what a mission!. I feel your pain. Getting them in seem uncomfortable but no probs, but spent hours to a couple of days trying to figure out how to get them out.

Some tips:

Getting them in:
- keep calm, rest for five mins after an attempt. It doesn't help giving your eyes a good poking until they're red.
- get used to gently touching your eyes a couple of times 1st without the contact
- avoid touching the eyelashes, I find them like a trigger to shut the eyelids. Push them back with your finger if poss.
- put the contact on the tip of your index finger. hold open your eyelids and look up slightly, then gently and calmly put in the contact on the surface of your eyball slightly off center on the whites and pupil.
- When they are on the surface blink a couple of times, and roll your eyes around a little. The contacts should automatically position themselves over the center of your eye. (as the lens part sticks out a bit and it is shaped differently to the whites).

Getting them out:
Argg need more practice. Still Freaks me out pinching them out.
One technique that I am trying to use is similar to another mentioned in this forum, you can shift the contact without actually directly touching the surface of your eyeball, but through your eyelid.
- Hold your bottom eyelid open.
- Touch your top part of your eye with the "top eyelid closed", try and push down the lens "through the surface of your closed top eyelid"
- It should get blurry and feel different when the position has moved. Make sure you hold the contact in place when it has moved off center.
- Pinch out with index and thumb when contact has been position in the lower white of your eye (the different curvature of the contact should allow for this)

Hope this helps, keep trying, it is definitely unnatural to touch the eye, I know and frustrating as heck but practise practise and don't give up. It will finally get easier once you figure it out.

:)

60 PVG: Shanghai to Yangzhou

There are lots of buses from Shanghai to Yangzhou. Just not from PVG. I used to live in Shanghai and took the bus (3.5 - 4 hours, about 80 RMB) often. Buses go from Hanzhong Station (most often) plus Shanghai Train Station and I think Huaihai (can't remember). Another, slightly cheaper route is to take the train to Zhenjiang and then bus it to Yangzhou or get a shared taxi (buses stop around 6 or 7 if I remember correctly).

The train to Yangzhou is no good since it goes to Nanjing first then backtracks.

I once had a customer in here for over 2 hrs trying to get them in.." ...2 hrs later it wasn't funny anymore. I finally got them in 1 eye and was able to remove it but could not get it in my left eye.

I just finished struggling with this crap for the last half hour and have nothing to show for it.

I'm really glad other people posted stuff so I know I'm not the only sucker out there.

54 IKEA, Xuhui Store in Shanghai

Sorry but this is really not a Billy bookstore - it is a similar but cheaper version. It is nearly half the price of the normal Billy but also only available in one colour. Your Billy will be still the same price, because they are sourcing them from China for a long time now.
One thing I bought in Switzerland just now is from IKEA Shenzen. ;-)

The funny part is, that many products cost nearly the same in Germany/Switzerland and China. Something that may cost 1049 RMB in China will cost 99 Euro in Germany. The exchange rate is currently at around 10:1 so the price is really nearly identical.

53 How China Mobile Fee are Charged

I found your helpful blog while looking up how China Mobile charges for its service. You may be interested to read that charges are to be caller only. BTW - in the UK only the caller pays. See the following from Forbes, quoting AFX:

BEIJING (XFN-ASIA) - China is set to impose a caller-pays only policy for its two mobile telephone operators, the South China Morning Post reported, citing a source close to the Ministry of Information Industry.

The system would allow the country's more than 450 mln mobile phone users to enjoy cheaper services from as early as next month, the Hong Kong newspaper said.

Now when a mobile call is made in China both the caller and the receiver must pay.

The decision to adopt the caller-pays approach had already been made, the report said.

'The new policy has been kept secret by both the regulator and the mobile operators,' the report cited a ministry source as saying.

It was not clear whether the two mobile providers, China Mobile (nyse: CHL - news - people ) and China Unicom (nyse: CHU - news - people ), would implement the policy immediately from Jan 1 or phase it in, the report added.

48 Pudong Airport Maglev in Depth

I am very excited to ride the maglev because I have studied the technology for at least a decade and am fascinated by the concept - so fast, so clean, so safe,..so perfect (almost) - unfortunately with that accident in germany a few days ago it seems that alas the problem was human error - how a maintenance vehicle could be left unchecked on the track is simply appalling especially when you consider that many people have specfic jobs to ensure that this does not happen - my father was a railroader for forty years in Canada on CN Rail and accidents do happen despite the best checks but it is very tragic that this particular accident happened - I only hope that big business and governments do not use an accident like this as an excuse not to develop this wonderful technology further - I am riding the maglev in three days and have absolutely no anxiety about riding the Shanghai maglev.
Also very cool site Mr Wang - great to see free information and a free forum for people to discuss and find answers - I live in Shanghai and this site is very helpful.
Thanks.

28 Do You Have a Calendar?

yesyes, it seems the cultures here converge on a timeless (erg! bad pun! bad!) contradiction. you see this all over the world; the less-organized cultures are being devoured by the moreso. i cannot say that this is an entirely good thing -- many of the most financially successful people I have met are shallow, unaware, and effectively worthless. however, for those of us able to draw the best from both worlds are at a huge advantage. certainly, it is not easy to deal with people constantly changing scheduling dates with me, anymore than it is easy to deal with people calling me and expecting me to be available to them at a moment's notice. my simple solution -- i refuse to, and (in the case of business associates) tell them they must schedule a meeting, or in the case of friends i drop everything and have a good time, _whenever possible_, and cherish a society that values interpersonal communication as much as earnings. after all, that is why i am here! but yeah, calendars kick ass. i can barely remember my own cell phone number :P

27 Living Cost in Shanghai - Part II

To all of you well-heeled expats interested in Shanghai housing prices -- WangJianShuo is a good person to ask, because he is clearly quite well-educated and well-paid! ^_~ His website ROCKS -- however, I have a different take on housing costs in SH -- i believe a family of 3 or 4 can live quite comfortably and safely in SH for less than 3000 RMB/month. There will be some adjustments -- only one elevator may work, the shower may not produce hot water 100% of the time, and the building may be less well-insulated than you are used to, but millions of Shanghainese enjoy life in this manner, and so do I. In NYC apartments ALMOST as good as these would run you well over $1300/month -- SH is no NYC, but it's a real bargain. Why come to Shanghai to spend all your time and profits attempting to re-create your life abroad?

I have recently gone apartment hunting in Hongkou qu in Shanghai. I am writing up a page on it now. ok, done; it is very poorly laid out -- i hope no-one gets a headache reading it -- but it has, at the bottom, a link to a bevy of photos, of real apartments, available in SH last month. it shall be at http://lessly.net/apts/ for now. send positive feedback, and i might get around to making it proper ;)

26 Why I Don't Have an English Name

I'm not sure about "high level" but I will persist. Another explanation of the difference in this respect between Chinese people and most other nationalities, was cultural confidence. A Japanese person suggested that it was because Chinese people did not feel threatened by other cultures that they felt so free to change their names. The Japanese person I was talking to remarked on how relaxed Chinese people were in a Japanese context in having their Kanji provounced using the Japanese rather than the Chinese pronunciation. This was decidedly not the case with most Korean people, they said.

The idea that cultural confidence might explain this runs counter to the ideas I suggested earlier and in this whole discussion I do feel that I am speaking from complete ignorance (never having lived in China and only having been friends with Chinese people in a Western context).

However, I would stand by my earlier comments in one respect: many Westerners and indeed other nationalities would experience being told one name and later finding it was not the "real" name afterall as a rather disorienting experience. They might interpret it as a rather exclusive rather than inclusive practise, even though it seems very inclusive to rename oneself at first sight.

25 Why I Don't Have an English Name

Very interesting discussion. I am an English person living in Japan. It is true that when dealing with people of a different language it is sometimes necessary to make some compromise as to how one is addressed. In Japan, for instance, I expect to be called Kurisu here rather than my real name Christopher. The same type of mangling goes for my surname. However, I would never consider adopting an Japanese name to substitute for my English name. The legal aspect does not worry me so much as what you call "branding". I call it personal identity and cultural identity. I wonder whether the whole phenomenon of Chinese people using different names in English is somehow related to an lack of comfort with their real names being mangled in the foreign pronunciation. That is an ill informed comment but I just put it out there to be knocked down. Could it be interpreted, rather than being an expression of open mindedness, as a type of exclusivity? Rather like using a handle on a website discussion board. Wouldn't it be more open just to accept that foreigners are going to mangle the pronunciation of your real name? I once remember reading a poem about cats having two names: the one humans gave them and their secret name that no human would ever know, which was their real name for themselves. I hope no-one takes offence at the comparison. What happens if an English speaking person had a relationship with a Chinese man and they started to know them by their English name? Do they call them by that unreal name for the rest of their lives. Anyway, down to practicalities: I have to say the initials idea sounds one good compromise or is it possible to pick out one or two syllables from your name rather than insisting on all three. Three syllables is terribly difficult to remember in a foreign name. My grand mother still calls my Japanese Wife Ikea (a famous Swedish furniture shop) rather than Ayako!

24 Second Run Way for Pudong Airport

I had the "pleasure" of using this runway last friday combing back from Europe. It takes between 10 and 15 minutes to get to the terminal taxying in the plane (which is even worse then the new runway the opened in Amsterdam airport last year). I wish they would finally do something to solve the disasterous logistics in Pudong. Talking about hugh cues at Immigration, endless delays (both on domestic and international flights) instead of continuous expansion (and using excuses like air traffic congestion at 10PM!). I really wish we were back to the "old" days of Hong Qiao airport, which was and still is much better in operations.

22 Do Chinese Move to Small Cities

In regards to comparison between US and Chinese educational opportunities, there are also competitive US public universities such as Univ. of Michigan or Univ. of Wisconsin, where as an in-state applicant to these schools, it is easier to get in than as an out-of-state applicant. This is not a discrimination, rather a previledge state residents have because they pay state taxes. Morevoer, I don't think there is any discrimination if you are an out-of-stater. In fact, some instances, in-staters acknowledge that out-of-staters do as an average have higher qualifications. As in China, there are some parents who live in certain states, to send their children to public univ. and also save some money paying in-state tuition.

21 On Ethic

Well, discussing ethics in china will require someone who lives or lived there before, so I won't comment on that. But, after visiting china a number of occasions, one thing I noticed is that strangers are not so friendly or even courteous to each other. It is a bit hard to generalize; but, my feeling is that strangers in a restaurant, for example, generally do not have a friendly chat.

20 Donation Needed for Zhan Xiao Feng

I have a father-in-law in shanghai who refuses my wife's offer to buy health insurance for him. I think perhaps he feels it is too expensive and may feel that it is too much of a burden. Actually, I would like to find out about how much it would cost regardless. I live in Germany and the principle here is that regardless of how poor you are, individual's health should come first. But I must say, it is indeed easy to say this when you are able to pay for the cost. At least for now.

10 Lost My Passport of P. R. China

Wang jianshuo,

That was a terrible ordeal regarding your passport. The "ma fan" that was your nightmare of reapplying for a passport embodies everything negative said and felt about the Chinese buraucracy.

I am hoping that you or someone here can help me understand a bit Chinese passport procedures.

My friend (Chinese national) wants to apply for a passport, and for a Vietnamese visa. However, her school has her hu kou and refuse to give it to her. She said that this is required in order to apply for a passport (her shen fen zheng is not enough ID?). WHY won't her school give her her hu kou? Is this normal? And, does she absolutely need it to apply for a passport?

My second question: after (if) she gets her passport, can she mail it and the necessary visa documents and feeds directly to the Vietnamese Consulate in Guangzhou (she lives in guang xi), or does she have to go through a travel agency to get the vis?

Thanks for the help from anyone. Email: PittTiger@yahoo.com

6 Shanghai SARS: Situation Severe

Hi Marie,
I do not know if you have seen the live coverage yesterday evening by local Shanghai TV. WHO was actually very positive about the situation in Shanghai and the measures the SH goivenment has taken. They were only able to check about 10 hospitals but I can tell you it sounded extremely positive. words like an example for the rest of China" were used. The conference was in English with Chinese translation. It at least gave me a more better insight in the situation here.

4 Hospitals and Hotlines for SARS in Shanghai

There are two good articles to read in newsweek (april 21st) and tim (April 21st) about SARS and the formation of such diseases. Understood today that they shortened the Auto expo in Shanghai by three days (it would have been more clever to cancel but money is most likely more important). Anyway tomorrow night we will know more info on Shanghai, the questions is how reliable that will be.....

2 Shanghai Looks Good - Despit of SARS

Hi I'd be interested in hearing more about the announcement and the lift of the reporting ban. I'm an American living here in Shanghai. My Mandarin is really limited, so I don't get to see much local news. Is there a place I can go to see that news in English?

I just ran into your site a couple days ago. Great stuff! I've checked out some of your Daocheng pictures. Really amazing.
