Wheat Powder Fuwa (Olympic Mascots) Stephen: I live in Shanghai, but no news about any bird flu anywhere close to Shanghai yet. If the airport is taken extra precautions that must be to make sure it stays that way. The other effect of the bird flu here is that people are making jokes about it at lunch time. :-) |

KFC Dropped Potato Wedge in Shanghai In my area in hongkou district this change already happened a week ago. However it is still possible to order french fries or pepsi. Only the menu's changed, they still have all the individual items. I'll definitely continue to order french fries as the salad is very very tiny in size. No way you get a full stomach from such a small amount. *g* |

Price Increase of Shanghai Metro Too bad the price for the metro will go up. I don't think it will help even a bit to decrease the traffic. Most people using the metro rely on it to get to their work, if they wouldn't use the metro they would take much longer to arrive at their work so they just stand the awfully busy metro. It would be better if there would be actual structural improvements for the metro network, like decreasing the interval on line 1 and 2. Currently the interval is around 3 to 4 minutes on line 1, which is much to high. If they would decrease this to around 1 minute the traffic flow would be much better. It seems quite strange that they have to close the Dong Fang Metro Station for a full year just to add on more line. In the future there will be another line added at this station (making it the biggest in the shanghai network), will they close it for another year then? I don't see them closing Shanghai Railway Station for example to add the new line. For Dong Fang it might be different as they will add a line underground there, but a full year seems extremely long to me. At most a couple of months should be enough. |

Typhoon Hit Shanghai It might have been a pleasant experience for you Wang Jian Shuo, but this was not so for some people in Shanghai. 4 people died in Shanghai because of the storm, out of a total of 7 deads. Myself i've been busy during the whole night to get rid of the water in my bedroom. I was very relieved when the storm finally stopped around 03:10am. What surprised me a lot was that the next morning when my street was completely covered with 15cm of water nobody of the local people was doing something about. The only people doing something where government employees. Where I come from in Europe this would be impossible, every local inhabitant would already be working together to fix their mutual problem instead of waiting for the government to come fix it for the oh so poor people. |

Wiki is Weak-y Yes a wiki requires maintenance. If you have a large enough community base it can work very well, take a look at http://en.wikipedia.org/ for example, an online encyclopedia project using a wiki. |

Donghai Bridge For those people commenting on the bridge making the distance to Ningbo shorter: I won't. This bridge will only go to Yangshan Island, although there are vage plans to continue it to Ningbo aswell. However, a second equally long bridge is also currently under construction, the Hangzhou Bay Bridge. This one will cross the Hangzhou Bay and therefore shorter the distance between Shanghai and Ningbo with about 150 kilometers. Unfortunately Shanghai government didnt allow the northend of the bridge to be build closer to Shanghai, otherwise it would have shortened the distance even more. What I also don't understand at all is the Donghai Bridge. Why limit this bridge to trucks? Trucks are slow to load and expensive for transportation. It would probably be handier if they would have made the bridge wider, or give it an extra layer. This could then be used to add a railway to and from Shanghai and Hangzhou, making transport time much shorter. |

Some Technical - AJAX I found the flickering I mentioned only happens when using Firefox. When using Internet Explorer it doesn't happen. Since Firefox is constantly increasing it's share of users I don't think the technique is completely ready for commercial usage yet, unless there is some way to improve the behaviour in Firefox. (According to this recent survey http://www.netapplications.com/news.asp Firefox now has more than 8% market share.) |

Blog Registration in China What needs to be registered? Just the website owners name and address? If that's all then I wouldn't find it a problem at all. You also have to provide those things when registering the domain name in europe or the states. |

Complicated Paying Process Yes, i've noticed the same thing in many places aswell. Seems to be something Chinese as I haven't seen it anywhere else in the world. And not just shopping malls, but also small shoe-shops with other 5 employees use the same system. It all seems like a big waste of time to me, but maybe the shopping centers do it this way so they can get a percentage of the money? Thats seems the only reason I can think of, but that doesn't explain why the shoe-shop uses the same system. |

Celebrating 1000 Days of Blogging Yes, Jian Shuo this page definitely helps people that want to know about Shanghai. I'm in Shanghai now and before I came here I already learned a lot about the city mainly from your website. I think it has helped prevent some culture shock I might otherwise have gone thru. Actually I'm also busy myself in making more information about Shanghai available to the public. I noticed on the wikipedia.com website that there was a large page about Shanghai, but only a very short page on the Dutch version. I've now started adding to the Dutch version of the Shanghai page so that more people will be able to read, and maybe get more interested, about Shanghai. (Wikipedia is currently offline because they are moving the servers to a new location, should be back up in 5 hours from now.) |

Celebrating 1000 Days of Blogging Congratulations Jian Shuo. Hope you can keep it up for atleast another 1000. Interesting to see how many people have made only one comment during this time, really a lot of people. Only I think you missed one person in the list: yourself. :-) |

Jia You, Shanghai Metro! Yes, that is always very funny to see everybody going for the escalators with almost empty stairs next to them. Always gives me a good opportunity to be upstairs first and thus avoid some of the crowd. |

Waiting for More Metro Lines I suppose the metro line that Jian Shuo is talking about is line 4. The same actually is also true for line 3. North of the current terminal station (Jiang Wan Town) I've seen already two more metro line stations that look almost finished. But the stations look almost finished for many months now. I don't regret it though, as I live close to the Jiang Wan Town station it means that for now I still always have a seat. I'm afraid that once the line is extended that will be over. |

Automatic Door in Metro The same automatic door system can also be found in one of the Metro line 1 extention stations: Shanghai Circus World. |

Trusted Tourism Agency I went to Beijing during the May vacation and arranged my trip at http://www.china-sss.com/. I didn't book it online but at the booking office at Shanghai People's Square. You need someone who speaks chinese to go with you though as the women in the travel agency didnt speak a lot of english. During the tour it was very busy everywhere. Our tourguide explained everything in Chinese, and most things also in English. |

Jia You, Shanghai Metro! Oh in addition it's good to know that not all the trains on metro line #1 actually go to the extention part. Only one in 3 or 4 trains goes further than Shanghai Railway Station. So when getting on the metro pay careful attention to the signs on the window of the metro as they mention then terminal station where that train will go. You can also look at the metro trains themselves, i've noticed that the newer looking models all go to the extention. But some of the older ones also seem to go there, so pay extra attention with the older looking models. I'm not sure how to describe the difference between the old and new models, as they both look quite similar. I think the newer ownes have a little bit rounded edges compared to the older ones. |

Jia You, Shanghai Metro! To pac> Yes Wen Shui station at line one is already operational, as are the rest of the stations of the Metro line #1 extention. The northmost station in use now is Gong Fu Xin Cun. |

Jia You, Shanghai Metro! I've been taking the metro line #1<->#2 transfer several times now, as well as the metro line #1<->#3 transfer. Even though I haven't been there during the real peak time, it's still quite busy even outside of the peaktimes there. But really the amount of traffic is not what annoys me about the metro. So far i've always managed to get myself squeezed in. But what I don't understand is the enormous distance you have to walk for each transfer. Also having to check-out and later check-in again for any transfer to or from metro line #3 is annoying, atleast when transfering between #1 and #2 this isn't necessary. I think the metro is still the best for of transportation in Shanghai, but in my opinion they've made some mistakes when building it. Line #3 should have been underground, just like the main parts of #1 and #2 and the transfers should have been placed closer to eachother. Placing #3 below ground would have made it easier to construct the stations so you don't need to checkout and checkin again. And with shanghai getting bigger and bigger space above ground will become more and more precious, so it would have logical to build all of the subway underground. Not like line #3 and the extention of line #1 which are aboveground now. Some parts being above- and other parts being belowground will make future connections only more difficult to realize. |

Kabb in Xintiandi Jian Shuo, you mention the url Shanghaiexpats.com, however this url doesn't seem to point to an existing website. You probably meant www.shanghaiexpat.com instead, without the 's' at the end. The prizes in the bar really seem extremely high to me. I live in the Netherlands and a can of pepsi would normally be 8-10RMB in a restaurant here. I wouldn't expect some common drink like pepsi to be so much more expensive in China. |

Happy Birthday to Me Congratulations Jian Shuo. Hope you will enjoy your birthday. I've been reading here for almost a year now. Soon I will visit Shanghai to do a course in Mandarin. To Roosevelt: 27 is young to be married? In my country (Netherlands) I know there's quite a lot of difference in the time people marry. Some people I know already married around 21/22, others didn't marry yet at 30. Personally I think 24,25 might still be a bit young. But if people choose to marry at that age I can understand quite well. |

Shanghai Metro Line #1 - Part III Nice descriptions of the different stations. If they do finish the extention to line #1 there will be quite a lot of new stations judging from my map. On my map there are an additional 9 stations planned. Most of these stations will be on GongHeXin Rd. Probably the most interesting of these will be the station on the intersection of GongHeXin Rd and YanChang Rd close to Shanghai University, Zhabei Park and Songjaoren's Mausoleum (seems to be in or next to the park). Starting from this station the metro line is supposed to follow the GongHeXin Rd all the way up to the Outer Ring. I'll be able to check out the Shanghai metro system myself later this year or early next year. (December or Januari) Hope they've already started extending Metro Line #2 towards Hongqiao Airport by then, might make it easier for me to visit my friends in Shanghai. |
