"Love China" Blooms on MSN Messenger I think most people here don't really understand the patriotism is not in fashion anymore in the west. The only people that get coverage by medias are the people that loath their own countries, and trashed their officials. If you question, you are called the Neocons. And most of these well educated idiots do not understand why "the repressed people of China, still loved China" I am Chinese American, being up front, I do not believe in all the victimology that the mass media peddled this days. I still consider myself Chinese, even though I live in US. I have a problem with people who are only skin deep when it comes to other people's country. Tibet is an issue, and I do think Chinese Government should work with the Tibetan people. Give up Tibet? Absolutely not. Is Britian willing to give up their Virgin Islands in the Bahamas? Are US ready to give up California or Texas? If there wasn't a coup in the Ivory Coast, the French will stay there and exploit the African indefinitely. I am sorry if I am a bit cynical with this. Do the people in Tibet ever known Freedom? This Daila Lama is the first to leave Tibet right? If I am wrong on that, I apologize in advance. If Tibet become a stand alone country, they are going to be a theocracy country anyway. At that time, Daila Lama will be the supreme ruler of the Tibet, so, what is the difference? I do think China should let Dalai Lama back to Tibet, but, any talk about independence should be stopped. Tibet is part of China, get over it. Just like Texas or the British Virgin Islands. I think most of the people that attack the athelets are cowards, they know they are in a safe distance, and the so call "Civilized" people will not persecute them. How many of them actually lived in Tibet before the communist and after and compare the difference? probably none, so, it is all second hand information, they are like parrots, repeating everything feed to them by the mass media, that is why I called them well educated idiots. They do have the pact mentality too, if one of them think it is an issue, they all think it is an issue, so, you call this individual thinking? Just remember this, the true genious and great thinkers are truly loney people, because they do not have many peers. I think the current views of the world are a bunch of spoiled brats keep repeating each other so they won't be the lone voice out there. It is pretty sad. As for GN, I happen to be a designer too, but I do not see things you way. Designer are designing for the people, if people enjoy it, it is a successful design, (Successful, not great, there is a difference) if only a few of your friends thinks it is a great design, but the rest of the crowd do not see it that way, are you sure it is a good design, of these country bumkins just do not have the taste level for it? That is a very condecenting way of talking to your fellow countrymen. As for Belacqua, I think the reason why Curry had become the British National Dish is because British wasn't known for their culinary ability. The French did not take up their African ethnic dishes as their national dish don't they? So, Chinese had thousands of years of supreme culinary skill, so, we aren't as easily integrated as the British. Also, I think we do have a certain pride on our own culture, especially in regards to food. |

The Name of Chinese People George, just remember, Chinese are connected to all their cousins, and all the cousins are consider to be extended brothers and sisters. So, it is not unsual to have these kind of confusing relationship. I have been a great aunt since I was 8 years old. I think my title may have to be jagged up to about great great aunt by now. Those people who called me great great aunts are my grandpa's cousin's decendents. My Grandpa was the youngest in his generations. His oldest cousin is about 57 years older than him, he neices and nephews are good 30+ years older than him, and his grand neices and nephews are 10+ years older than him. so, yes, it can be dog gone confusing when it comes to the extended family relationship in Chinese, but within the immediate family, it is quite easy. |

The Name of Chinese People I agree with Akam42. It is confusing to the non-Chinese speaking people about our references to our relatives. Great Uncle, grand uncle, or distance great uncle will address that issue. Also, to most western culture, it is hard to tell which cousins they are referring to, in Chinese, we address the relationship in different titles. So, we know the relationship between the cousins, the in-laws, aunts and uncles and etc. Now, because of the one child policy of China, the meaning of the different relationship between generations are much more simplified than it used to be. I remember one of my high school classmate, who came from a very wealthy and large family, she called her uncle in Calgary the 24th Uncle from the father side. I asked how many wifes did her grandfather had..........he had 4 wifes, therefore, they had a huge extended family. They took up a few greyhound buses for a family trip. The family photo shoot is a major events, and the size of everyone's headshot is the size of a short grain rice. I think the extended father side of her family member total number are about 186 people in 3 generations. I can't bring myself to asked how many on her mother side because she did mentioned her mom came from a even larger family. |

How I Drive in Shanghai? I think only if you are driving in his situation, and found that you can follow all the rules, should you be able to critize him. Personally, I think it is wrong not to follow the traffic rules, but you are talking about the entire driving populations and the pedestrians, if 75% of them do not follow rules, how would you be able to follow the rules? Chain effects anyone? I think if they start to really enforce the traffic rule, you will see a change, otherwise, it is just a zoo no matter how you slice it. |

Shanghainese Girl Marrying Foreigners I don't think it is all Shanghainese girl that is marrying the foreigners. How about it is a trend started from oversea, such as USA. Since the 60's, the GI with the Vietnam girls? In 90's, it is almost like a fashion statement to have a Wall Street Banker type walk around with an Asian girl. There are genuine love involve too, I am not discounting the fact that there are girls in China who married foreigners for a ticket out of China, or they think they are getting out of proverty. The grass is always greener on the other side. I meet a few of these girls here. One in particular, she was actually from Beijing, she married a Born-Again Christian from Nebraska, she is miserable. She used to work in a TV station in Beijing, and now, she is living in rural America, missing all her shopping, and friends. I did not ask how she meet her husband, but I have a feeling that she meet him through one of those mail order bride thing. So, who is suffering the most in these case? They both do, he can not satisfy her material demand, she felt like she was cheated out of a good life. To each of their own, no one should make judgement about other people's choices, right? |

Happy Birthday to Goudaner (3rd Year) Hello JianJuso Well, congradulation on the 3rd year anniversary of your car. I agreed with you on the change it for the newer and better material things mentality in the world today. Lets put it this way, I still have my 1994 Toyota Corolla that I bough way back when. Yes, it is still working, and it never gave me any problems. I kept up with the maintenance and the regular wear and tear. It is still a good car, even though I don't use it much anymore since I lived in NYC. It serves no purpose to keep an old car in the city while it cost $400.00 USD a month to park it. So, I left it at my mom's house, and drive it occassionally when I need to pick up a lot of grocery or buying sod for my mom's lawn. By the way, when you laugh all the way to the bank with your money saved, when your friends have to finance their hobbies, it makes a great deal of difference. That doesn't mean I never did have fun with the finer things in life............I just sold my little convertible sports car that I own when I lived in Florida. I had a BMW Z3 roadster, the worst I did was I drove 125 MPH on I75---the Alligator Alley. it was fun, my friends told me my little car could have took off like a little plane if I hit a little bump. I am Chinese, and my familiar originally came from Pudong, well, my grandfather anyway, I grew up in Hong Kong, and went to School in Canada, now, I live and work in NYC. So, next time when you and your wife are in Town, let me know, I can take you to a few local novelty here in the City. Not just any Tourist traps. Dancingdots |
