15 Beijing Airport Terminal 3 (T3) Opens

This is just the most amazing gateway into the fastest growing nations in the world. Really looking forward to going through this brand new wonder in August on my way to the Games. They say that will be the games to end all games. I'll be there to see it.

14 Top 3 Issues of Shanghai Tourism

Hi:

I just returned from China after a thirty day stay. The last few days of my trip were spent in Shanghai, I loved it!

I sincerely appreciated a robust selection of english speaking channels on cable television at my hotel. I had spent quite a bit of time in Xiangtan, CN and the only english speaking channel was the BBC.

Hmmmm, improvements to increase tourism. Perhaps menus in both chinese and english. I went to mostly authentic little restaurants and most of the owners were not english speaking, and for the most part their clientele was not english. So convincing them to spend money on menus might be a hard sell (I'm lucky, my girlfriend is chinese).

Like others, I would appreciate maps in english. Even though I didn't know where I was going all the chinese people we asked for directions were extremely accomodating.

One thing I really did find annoying was the street vendors. I didn't know there were so many Rolex's in Shanghai! After the 100th person asked us if we had any interest in a Rolex our tact was to offer them a used umbrella (it was raining). Most of the responses were either laughter or the hawkers walking away perplexed.

All this banter about prostitutes and "Shanghai Girls" are from men who spend all of their time in the bathroom. They wouldn't know what do do with either one of the women they are talking about. Cowards that have the anonymity of the WWW.

Shanghai I love it!

11 Network Infrustucture in my Home in Shanghai

Regarding smtp, I can offer my experiences as a Canadian expat since Sept 04. Outgoing smtp is not blocked for me, though it is also not a provided service from what I know (China Telecom has no smtp servers). Trying to run my own smtp server worked only sometimes, because emails which originate from China IP addresses are often blocked from the other side, because of all the spam which originates in China. Furthermore I am not a tech expert. The only 2 solutions that work reliably are as follows: 1. sending to an smtp server that is off-continent: such as the one my Canadian webhosting provider provides me free with my webhosting package (I never knew they did, but I asked, and they do); 2. Webmail (hotmail and other IMAP providers), though this doesn't work if you need MS Outlook integration with other app's...

No solution is perfect if you're in China. I use these and estimate about 95% success (providing that your off-continent provider doesn't block your traffic from this IP too). If you want more info, email me at info@mediainform.ca. I happen to be a former telecom consultant.

10 New York - Day 2

Hi Jianshuo,

Great pictures of New York! Looks like it's quite chilly there.

I'll be arriving in NYC on friday. Let me know if you'd like to checkout the Metropolitan Museum of Art with a fellow Shanghai enthusiast. :)

Stay warm!

9 Basic Geographic Knowledge about China

Hi Jianshuo,

You are definitely correct about the Americans' lack of awareness and understanding of modern China. When I talk to people about China, I've had people ask me whether the Chinese still ride around in rickshaws and live in ancient pagoda-style houses! Most Americans still have misconceptions about this country.

Great background info on the major cities in China. I think there are a good amount of foreigners who travel to Shenzhen as well. Maybe you could provide some info about this city also. Thanks!

Best,
Gary

7 Happy Birthday to Me

Happy Birthday Jianshuo!

I've been an avid reader of your blog for about 6 months now. I think it's a great resource for people interested in Shanghai. I was actually living in SH all of last year. Reading your blog brings back a lot of pleasant memories...

If only I knew you back then, we could have metup for coffee at the Mei Luo Cheng Starbucks. :) All the best from Los Angeles, CA.
