Flight from Shanghai to Nanyang, Henan Please enjoy the convenience of small airplanes and airports as much as possible. And they will not last very long. These cities will grow so quickly that they soon need to build much bigger airports and use, consequently, much bigger airplanes. Of course you may keep enjoying this kind of convenience in the future if you can travel by private jets ;-) |

Everyone is Talking about Stock There is a great anecdote about 1929 stock market crash right before the great depression: Joe Kennedy stopped to get his shoes shined, and the shoe shine boy was giving him stock tips and telling him how to get rich in stocks. That day, he sold all the stock he owned, and the market crashed soon after. The moral of the story: when the shoeshine boys start talking about something, make sure you aren't in it. You know, "shoeshine boys" here means "all ordinary people"... |

New Phone - Dopod D600 This is your sixth cell phones. It seems that you change your cell phone every two years or so. Is that how often people in cities of China update their cell phones? |

Rumors after Rumors I checked the source of the rumor. That piece of news itself actually didn't talk about any of the rumor. But some headlines pointing to that news made the rumor :( The news headlines have been abused so much in China these days that they can be totally unrelated to their news contents.... |

You'v Got (Registered) Mail! In United States the USPS is also a monoply business, ans it is tax-funded :) The post office here is one of few places where you can see the line for waiting ALL the time. But they are so well protected from the competition that the government even doesn't allow other private carriers to charge less than USPS prices... |

PVG: Shanghai Pudong Airport Map The picture must was taken long time ago, maybe some time before the second runway (i.e. runway 34-16) was put into use in March 2005. I am a bit confused by the number of the second runway of PVG. From the picture you can see that two runways are not exactly parallel to each other. The new runway is aligned a bit more with the north-south direction. But its marking is 34-16 while the one for the old runway is 35-17. Something is not quite right here. I think the second runway should have either the same marking number as the old one (i.e. 35R-17L) or the number of 36-18. Here is some info on airport layout design: http://virtualskies.arc.nasa.gov/design/tutorial/tutorial5.html |

Need to Go to Beijing Some Time What? The Winter of Inernet is coming, again? I thought in Silicon Valley we have been in this winter since about 5 years ago :) Yes, there is a Google here, and we sometime talk about Web 2.0 too, but that's about it. Up till today, there are still about 200,000 fewer IT jobs in the Valley than 5 years ago. Empty office buildings are still seen everywhere. And the only international flights arriving at San Jose International Airport are from Mexico .... So guess your forecast will not mean too much to us anyway :) |

Four Years of Blogging Congradulations. I noticed your blog only one or two months after you started it. In fact it is your blog that led me to the world of blogs :-) For all these years, I have kept reading your articles, almost all of them... THanks for your good job for keeping all of us well informed about tje great changes happening in Shanghai and China. I am not sure whether 9.11 made people sit down and write their blogs, although I do believe that 9.11 may be likely a turning point for the human history... Does Haagen-Dazs' package include their ice ceam moon cakes ;-) Happy Mid-Autumn festival. |

Companies in Silicon Valley There were two pieces of news just before your visiting Silicon Valley. Sun decided to lay off about 5000 people and sell one of its campuses. Intel also may let 16000 of its staff go home. It has gradually move its operation out of Silicon Valley. Wondering how many of these companies you mentioned here will be still in Silicon Valley after 20 years. There has been a lot of talk around here about Detroit-ization of Silicon Valley.... |

Arrived at San Jose Any comment on the food of Wing's :) China Stix and Royal Garden are two better restaurants near your hotel. There are more good restaurants in that Milpitas Square which is about 10 minutes driving from Double Tree. |

San Jose Impression "Mountains on the left reminds me of the saying "Old Wide West", since there are not many trees on the mountains - just yellow surfaces." --- The valley was still in the raining season just one month ago, the "yellow" mountains on the east side of the valley looked like those green rolling hills in Europe. The view was much better then. "... It is due to the very good order - one lane on which cars moves slowly does not prevent cars on the other lane to run up to 60 miles/hour. " -- There is usually a carpool lane in the busy sections. You need to have multiple people in the car to drive in that lane. The violation willl result a hefty $365 fine -- this is most likely where the "very good order" comes from :) |

20 Years of Professional Managers in China When MNC started their expansion in China several years ago, they used the managers in their divisions in other Asian contries or regions. However, in my opinion, those managers often are not really good professionals. Many of them didn't bring the corperate culture from HQs to the divisions in China. Many of them lack the necessary experience to handle the business in large scale and the experience to deal with Chinese government. We have seen quite a few of them involved in the major scandals and serious mismanagement. |

I Don't Drive Well After Back from San Jose "The problem I face is, if I follow the traffic rule (the traffic rules are not difference too much in U.S. and China), I will be a trouble maker...To follow a rule that is only in someone's mind or on the book does not mean you are a good player in this society" Hmm, are you saying that the "rule" in China righ now is not to follow those rules on the book ? :-) Happy New Year! |

China Internet Conference Do you know why the Internet franzy is appearing again in China, but not quite in other places such as US? |
| 53 |
Bought iPod Mini as Gift for Wendy Considering that 1650 RMB is probably about the average weekly wage in Shanghai, it is very expensive. I believe iPod is being made in China. They should have been sold a bit cheaper there. But China just has so many people that even a very small percentage of the population can always represent a huge demand. There is no needs to lower the price when selling goods in China. The Starbucks, Mcdonalds, Pizza Hut and Häagen-Dazs all are selling their stuff in China at the similar prices in US. Although they became luxury brands in China, their places are always full of customers. With the average local labor cost that is lower than 25% of cost in US, it seems that those companies are making much better profit in China. |

Moved to Zhang Jiang I remeber that about six years ago Mr. Hu Hongliang, one of the VPs at Zhangjiang Hi-Tech Park Development Co., came to the Silicon Valley to introduce the park. The meeting was held in a very samll conference room at a start-up company in Fremont. There were only about 15 people at the meeting. In his slides, Mr. Hu showed us that there would be a subway to the park directly from the downtwon soon... That was probably the evry first time people in the Silicon Valley ever heard of Zhangjiang. What a progress has been made since then! |

The Silicon Valley Spirit is Back If the "Silicon Valley Spirit" is about the innovation and entrepreneurship, then it may be more or less always here. However, if it means another boom with abundant VC investment, high employment rate and successful IPOs, then it isn't really back yet. It is true that some VCs started to invest in hi-tech industry again last year. But it is no where near what was in late 90's. If you drive around the Silicon Valley during week days, you will sill find many office buildings with empty parking lots. The area probably has the highest hi-tech unemployment rate in US. The Silicon Valley hasn't found the "next big thing" yet. And it also doesn't know how to handle the competition from other areas such as China. So many people are now wondering whether the "Silicon Valley Spirit" will ever be truely back to the Silicon Valley in the future. |

Top Two Differences in China Although the origin of tipping may come from the extra satisfaction brought by the service, it has been a general understanding in western world that the tip is a part (sometime a significant part) of the income the service providers depend on. So tipping may not be necessarily a way of showing only appreciation. In some cases it is not entirely voluntary. For example in US, the room service charge by most hotels automatically includes the tips. Many restaurants add tips to the bill whenever they serve a table with more than 8 people. Some up-scale hotels and restaurants in China learnt very quickly that the tips could be an extra income for the companies, but not the individuals who provided the service directly. So the tip there is indeed a part of the price for the service. |

Chinatowns in U.S. Chinatowns certainly mean different things to different people. But I have to agree with JSW on that they don't really reflect today's China. For last 10 years or so China has experienced tremendous change. How much change have we seen in those Chinatowns in US? |
| 48 |
Back from Geek Diner in Bellevue I actually also have an account at BOA which I haven't used very often. I just went to their website and found out that I simply have no way to even add an individual payee who lives abroad to the payee list, let alone transferring money to his/her account in a foreign bank with the service. Unless your account at BOA has a different bill payment service, I am afraid they somehow misled you about this "trick". |
| 47 |
Back from Geek Diner in Bellevue JS, do you think that the money in your BOA account here can be transfered to someone's account of another bank in China through BOA's bill payment service? I thought it works only in US. |
| 46 |
Back from Geek Diner in Bellevue Does Bank of America have big presence in China now? I didn't see any BOA banch in Shanghai about three years ago. |

Rejected by ANA and Postponed Travel I heard about that regulation sometime before. But when my sister who lives in US wanted to have a stop-over in Japan for sightseeing on her way to China in Oct, she was told by Japanese consulate that she needed a visa, and she got the following email for them: Here is the list of your visa requirements. Please note that additional documents may be necessary. 1. An application form completed and signed. Chinese citizens must write their names in Chinese characters, as well as in Roman letters. The application form must be fill out completely. For example, if the applicant has no criminal record, please write "none" on the appropriate line. 2. Valid passport with sufficient space for visa stamp. 3. A 2-inch square photograph, taken within six months of application. This photo must be glued to the application form. NOTE: GLUE ONLY, please do not staple or tape. 4. Green Card. 5. A printed reservation from the airline company, or the reliable travel agency, showing travel to and from Japan, including dates and flight numbers. 6. 3 most recent monthly bank statements (complete originals plus copies of all pages) 7. A letter from the applicant's employer, directed to this Consulate, noting salary, length of employment, position, and dates of vacation. The process here usually takes four business days. If you have further questions, please reply this email. Visa Dept. Consulate General of Japan However, compared with what was required for Chinese passport holders several years ago, this is already a big improvement: They used to require applicants to submit much more documents, even their resumes! |

Thinking about Sony F828 DMC-FZ20 doesn't have the manual zoom control, which prevents you from getting the accurate picture composition. But F828's lens is a bit too long because of this feature :-) I always thought those Japenese electronics including digital cameras are sold cheapest in US. Now it looks like that their best prices can be also found in China. JS, where did you see this price in Shanghai? does it come with a true SONY warranty? You can get a free 512MB memory stick pro with the purchase of this camera: http://images.pricegrabber.com/rebates/12551.pdf |

Edward's New Satellite TV For some of you who don't know it yet, China is going to have its own DBS (Direct Broadcasting Satellite) system by the end of next year or early 2006. So it will change the current law and allow the individuals to receive TV from their satellite receivers. It will be interesting to see how the authorities let people to receive programing from only certain satellites but not others. |
| 42 |
Top Three Innovation that Failed in Shanghai I also don't think they are failures. Any new system needs time for introduction and, if necessary, improvement. Sometime people just have to learn and gradually become used to those new stuff. For example, they will soon understand that those push-for-green-light buttons in downtown may only work during those wee hours. |
| 41 |
Going Back to China? It has been said that you can have a similar level of living standard in China if you earn about 30% of your US salary. So what 500,000 RMB could bring to that guy in Shanghai may be very close to what he would have in US with a salary of 180,000 USD. Although this "equation" may not be very accurate, many returnees have found it is quite true. Of course there are many elements in the "living standard", and the similar standard is not exact same standard. For example in China you may find playing golf, or buying a foreign-made car is more expensive than that in US. on the other hand, you easily can hire one full-time nanny if you make a half million RMB annually (how much do you have to make if you want to do this in US?). Therefore, how you feel about your new living standard in China will heavily depend on what your emphases are :-) |

How about Starting an Online TV Station? It may be hard to tell the difference between personal contents and media contents. Obviously you always can put some kind of video/audio on your blog or website, for example the streaming of live shot outside your apartment window as you did befoe. Will it be considered as a program of the WJS TV station? :-) |
| 32 |
Wangjianshuo's Blog is Famous I found this blog sometime last year when I was interested in a job at MS Shanghai and tried to find related information. Not only did I find his blog very interesting and informative, but also that was the first time I knew about the existence of Weblog -- a really good start of my blog reading experience. His site has a good blend of things he heard, observed and did, and his interesting and profound thoughts. This blog is attractive not only to the foreigners but also to the Chinese people. Several months ago I introduced (http://www.haiguinet.com/old/ShowTopic.asp?ID=314978) his blog to The Returnees Forum (http://www.haiguinet.com) and many have found his information very valuable.... Thank you Jianshuo and keep up the good work! |

Salary in Shanghai - Part II The salary varies so much in China, but 30-40K is indeed too low. According to what I was told, an IT manager with 7 years experience may expect something between 100k and 300kRMB from a foreign company. |

Canon WebView Camera VB-C10 You may want to check out Logitech's camera Orbit which also has a controllable pan-tilt mechanism and is much cheaper. |

Working Vertically I believe that this kind of construction project is now spreading all over the major cities in China. This of course has been driven by the government to make those places look better. Most of these buildings are state-owned properties. But what if some buidings in those areas are owned by individuals? Are they still required to do it? |

Car Expenses In California, the regular gas is about $2.00 per gallon, which is equivalent to about 4.3 RMB per liter. |
| 27 |
Puxi is not Car Friendly Can you still legally park your car on the sidewalks in Shanghai now? Three years ago I was a bit shocked when I saw my friend drove his car right onto a sidewalk and parked it next a sign which indicated that no bicycle was allowed to park :-) Then I thought that the regulation would be changed very soon to remove such unfair privilege from the car owners... |
| 26 |
Jian Shuo Got His Car It is great! Congratulations on your first and new car! As you probably know, in US most people's first cars are used cars. They got their first cars either from used car dealers or their parents. They then buy new cars when they are ready to switch to their second cars. I still remebeer how happy I was when I bought my first used car and then later the new one. Now you combine those two together, I guess you must be super happy:-) Couldn't wait to see the pictures. A question: Where do you park your car? I know many apartment complex and comercial buildings don't have parking facility. Could it be a problem? |

Blogcn & BlogDriver Shut Down This is sensitive stuff... well, it is not about SARS, so the outcome this time may be different? In any case the last thing we want to see is this site is shut down.... Let's pray. |
| 23 |
Old Houses in Shanghai - Part II I believe that all (or most) of these houses are still state owned property. Based on the newspaper article, each two story house has about three families -- not a very comfortable living condition. This actually reflects an interesting realality: There are many beautiful old houses in some very nice areas in Shanghai. But the actual condition there may not as good as it seems. |
| 22 |
Continue to Seek for an Apartment You certainly have a good taste when it comes to residential locations in Shanghai. The place you picked is THE most expensive area there. It is off limits to ordinary Chinese people. One of things I don't quite understand is that in China house owners actually don't own the land. They have only the right of using the land for 70 years. It seems to me that the propery value will decrease dramatically when it approaches to the end of period. |
| 21 |
How Interviews were Conducted The sad thing is that people (i.e. interviewees, interviewers, crew personnels)in those pictues didn't feel anything wrong about what they were doing :-( They all seemed to be pretty OK with this way of making TV news... |
| 20 |
Bye Bye, Pudong I know Pudong area is not as convenient and exciting as Puxi now. But how about in three or five years? Although Shanghai is developing extremely fast, your decision seems to imply that the Pudong area will not become that good in near future. One of the problems when people trying to find apartments in the "inner-ring" areas is that the price there is just too high. Many apartments in those areas cost more than 10,000 RMB per square meter (about 120 dollar per square feet?). It is even much higher than those in most US cities. |
| 19 |
Film Mona Lisa Smile Although I was mainly talking about translation dubbing for foreign movies, technically in film-making dubbing is the process of adding or replacing a soundtrack for a movie. It is usually used in the post production stage to add background sound, special effect sound, music and dialogs into the final movie release. However, many dialogs these days are so called production sound which means they are recorded live when movies are being filmed. It has been preferred by most directors because it sounds natural and has perfect lip synch. |
| 18 |
Film Mona Lisa Smile Showing foreign movies in their original languages is of course by no means an indication of losing the local language :-) Outside China and Asia that is how most of foreign movies are played. Video and Audio including voices are two major components of a movie. They are presented best in the original forms which are preferred by both movie artists and audience. There is no perfect translation and dubbing, let alone the high cost. Not long ago China was one of a few countries where almost every foreign movies was played with dubbing. It was because of not only the traditional way showing froreign movies but also the censorship. Movies often had to be cut to meet the requirements from the government. Sometimes the cut was so much that some of dialogs had to be changed to patch up the broken story. Of course, the dubbing came handy in those situations :-) So foreign movie translation and dubbing became an industry and had its own form of art. Several major movie studios had big translation and dubbing ficilates. The most famous one was The Shanghai Film Dubbing Studio where several voice actors became very well known in China with their voices heard in various foreign movies. Interestingly, while nowadays it is used less for foreign moview, dubbing is used quite often in Chinese movies -- those Hong Kong movies with original dialogs in Cantonese. For many Chinese people Cantonese sounds just like another foreign language :-) |

Vegetarianism in Shanghai What is vetanism? Something even beyond veganism? |
| 16 |
37 Killed in Beijing and 40 in Moscow As for the international news coverage, Chinese people actually can hear more news than people do in US. |
| 15 |
Service Shock in Shanghai I believe that one of things a service representive in a US bank can and will love to do for the customers is to fill in their bank account application forms. Cutomer only have to provide their information, sign their forms and input passwords directly. Unless there are some major holes in the current system of that bank, filling in an application form shoud have nothing to do with the customer's authorization of accessing the money in the account. |

Wireless (WiFi) Hot Spots in Shanghai Yes, you always can set up your wifi router such that it will log all the MAC addresses that connect the router and associated time information. |
| 13 |
Wireless (WiFi) Hot Spots in Shanghai How are the users charged at Starbucks in China for using its hotspots? Is possible to just give the credit card information during the login? Or they have to pay cash to the store before connecting the network? |

Happy New Year Do you know that your voice was just heard by tens of thousands Americans Thursday? Marketplace is a 30-minutes daily program broadcasted by several hundreds public radio stations throughout US. Now you are a really famous guy :-) |

Wow. Shanghai is Snowing Is it really true that, before this one, it didn't snow in Shanghai after 1996? Or you are just talking about "heavy" snow. I was told that it snows every year in the city although there is no snow accumulation on the ground. |

Satellite Dishes Still Forbidden in China This kind of law is just to give them the right to enforce it any time they want even though it seems to be broken most of time... Someone said once that the society is like a person while the law is like person's clothes. The person needs the clothes in order not to get cold. But China society is a kid who is growing so fast that no clothes seems to fit. So sometime the kid gets cold, but he is still growing without suitable clothes... At least you can still run the this site and criticize the system at the moment :-) |

Vote Me as Best Mainland Blog I will vote for you because you are one of BLOGERATI :-) There are more blog-related terms described in the article "Blah, Blah, Blog" By Paul McFedries: .......Bloggers tend to be passionate about their hobby, and the best among them ?the so-called blogerati or blognoscenti ?are genuine stars, with dedicated followers. These include the likes of writer Doc Searles (doc.weblogs.com), the Electronic Frontier Foundation's Cory Doctorow (boingboing.net), journalist Andrew Sullivan (www.andrewsullivan.com), and technoguru Esther Dyson (release4.blogspot.com). The vast majority of blogs are nothing more than ever-so-slightly glorified online diaries that record the daily trials and tribulations of the blogger. The worst of these journal blogs are dismissed as kittyblogs (since so many of them describe what their cat has done that day) or bloggerel (blog doggerel), and these bloggers are often accused of oversharing (providing too much detail about their personal lives) or being guilty of blogorrhea (posting too much information in general). The rest of the blogosphere consists mostly of blogs devoted to specific topics. For example, a blawg is related to legal matters or is written by a lawyer; a bleg is used to beg for help or money; an advocacy blog supports a political cause; and a news blog or pundit blog examines mainstream news media and punditry (not to be confused with a blog that breaks its own news, or blews). Covering language and linguistics is the job of a linguablog; a tech blog focuses on technology; an edu-blog discusses education issues; a warblog tackles war, particularly the war on terrorism; and a photog is a blog that posts pictures, particularly candid shots of people in public places. In recent months, we've seen the rise of the moblog, a blog maintained and updated using a mobile device such as a notebook, a palmtop computer, or a cellphone. (Photogs are often updated via the new camera phones that are the latest rage.) With its emphasis on mobility, the moblog has created an interesting new dynamic at conferences and business meetings, as bloggers post critiques of the current speaker and other attendees read those critiques and comment on them. This generates an entire back channel of communication that the speaker is likely to be unaware of..... |

Wendy Became PMP and This Site Listed in DMOZ How valuable is the PMP certificate on job market in China? I didn't see much of its value in US when applying for a project manager position. There is no such requirement for this kind of jobs. I guess it may be different in China. |

JW Marriott in Tomorrow Square Opens It certainly has a nice view of the city! In US people usually don't associate Marriott with upper scale hotels because of those small hotels such as Courtyard and Residence Inn. Marriot Courtyard in Bellevue seems to be Microsoft's favorite hotel. I stayed there eight years ago when I was interviewed at MS for a SDE position. Last week I stayed at this hotel again when I had an interview for a Sr. PM position there... Which hotel(s) does MS Shanghai office usually book for the interviewees or its people visiting there? |
