8 On Ethic

People here don't say "excuse me" when they push past you, drivers don't yield to pedestrians, and folks often don't provide help when you ask for it (such as for directions or advice on where to shop). I often see drivers run red lights, and vendors try to rip visitors off whenever they can. People litter as casually as they breathe. If these folks are examples of "living by your own standards" then their standards must not be very high. Ethical behaviors are best set by example (or by force - if need be), starting from the leaders and pop icons, to parents and elder relatives. Higher consistent expectations leads to improved consistent behavior. If more folks thought and behaved like JS in terms of human conduct, then Shanghai, and China, would be a better and happier place.

7 Spring Festival in 2005

It sucks that the Spring Festival is always in the winter. But am glad I get to celebrate it here in China for the first time in 14 years. It's funny cuz when Chinese people in China say new year they mean the lunar new year, when they say "yuan dan" they mean the real new year. :)

6 Shanghai Metro Line #1 - Part III

JS, this is a cool guide for metro line #1! I'm in Shanghai now :) and getting around the city much thanks to your blogs! I'm staying near Shanxi station and working near Huangpi... this stretch is very interesting indeed. The signs in the metro stations that tell you which attractions are located at which exit are very helpful too. I am loving the transportation card which can be used in subways, taxis, buses, and even the ferry (which I took yesterday at night - beautiful scenary on the way back from Pudong).

Anyway, my collegues here are taking me to Xintiandi tonight, should be super fun.

I have a few requests for blog entries:
- If you could write about more traditional tourist attractions, like temples, museums, gardens, it would be much appreciated.
- :) Is there a bus map you can post? (My collegues here are also new to Shanghai - in fact, they've said that in the week that I've been here I've been to more places than them!)
- Is there a local place where I can change the date of my plane ticket? I flew with Air China.

5 Visa Card on ATM in China

Thanks JS for this information. I also found pictures of some ATM's from your old blogs. My friend who went to Beijing 2 months ago received a fake 100RMB bill from the ATM machine, this was a little discouraging.

You probably know this already, but in case you didn't, looks like your page http://bbs.wangjianshuo.com/ has been defaced.

I heard the equivalent to Xiang Yang in Beijing got shut down. Did X.Y. also get shut down?

3 Top Two Differences in China

Hi JingShuo,
Thanks those are good things to know!

I have a few questions on ATMs. Are there a lot of these in SH? Any security issues relating to the usage of ATMs and are there any fees for using ATMs?

Thanks again for your wonderful blogs.

1 Life in New York is Tough for Me

I've heard that people almost never tip in China. Is this true?

Thanks,
