28 Salary in Shanghai

Very cool blog! I think Jian Shou must be a very kind guy. Just visit this website by chance, and i want to say something about the living in Shanghai.

I am a Chinese, and working in a US firm in Shanghai. I absolutely agree we could either live with RMB 1000 per month, or RMB 20K per month. Everybody has his/her own way to deal with their lifes. I don't earn much in the firm, but still could has some money to go to the cinema, or starbucks, or pizza hut, sometimes, Hargen Daz as well. However, it all depends how you spend your money. I think for the person under the age of 25, it is acceptable for them to earn less than RMB5,000 per month, but after 25 year-old, it should have some promotion, as they need to save money for house or car.

If you guys wanna know some more info about Shanghai, i'd like to help, Msn: jason-wang319@hotmail.com

27 Lining Up for Metro?

It's very interesting to me the different approaches some of you have to fixing this problem. On the one hand, some suggest forcing compliance by having heavy fines or police involved. On the other hand, some suggest setting a good example and others will follow. This is like confuciansim versus legalism. I think it is interesting that propriety is still such a big issue in China. I am impressed that there are some thoughtful people in Shanghai who worry about this problem. I think if Chinese people want to fix a problem they will be able to if they work together.

25 Pudong Airport Maglev in Depth

My thoughts and prayers are with those that have lost their lives and those left behind.

It is unthinkable how an accident like this could have happened; any unit left on the track should have been equipped with some sort of train protection equipment.

On normal railways the signals are controlled by a series of track circuits connected to the rails the passage of a train operates a track circuit and changes the aspect of the associated signal, so if a unit is left on the line ahead of if you should have a broken rail the signal will advise the driver of the state of the road ahead.

I found the following….

The principle of the propulsion system in the guideway makes collisions between trains virtually impossible. If two or more trains were ever simultaneously in the same quideway segment, they would be forced by the motor in the guideway to travel at exactly the same speed in the same direction. They could not meet either in a head-on or rear-end collision.
Even a collision with another transportation mode is, for all practical purposes, excluded because the Maglev guideway is built without intersections. The majority of the guideway will be in an aerial configuration (elevated) or in a tunnel section and any at-grade sections will constructed where there are no roadway crossing requirements.

One can only assume that the other unit on the track was not maglev compatible ……

24 Using Contact Lenses

Well I tried again yesterday. Getting them in was fine, but again I could not for the life of me get them out again. The guy that was showing me this time gave me some usefull advice about practicing by touching the white of the eye to the left of the eye then the right and then the left followed by the right again.

Hopefully that will help me get used to the procedure for removing them. (I know that practicing putting them in took it from 40 mins to get them in one eye down to 5 minutes for both eyes)

23 Using Contact Lenses

Well My practicing worked I got both lenses in really quickly, Now getting them out I just couldn't do and in the end an optition had to get them out for me. While it is a bit disheartening I know that it is just a matter of practicing and so I have another appointment tomorrow and this time hopefully I will make even more progress.

I have to say that from reading the other posts here I am so glad that the optitians are making sure that I can get them out before I get to take them home as I would hate to be in the situation where some others have found themselves, not being able to get them out when there is noone arround to help.

22 Using Contact Lenses

Yoshiman, Try washing arround your eyes before hand as I know from practicing that if my face is sweaty and I don't clean it and dry it I have a very hard time keeping a grip on it when holding it.

Also don't get disheartened as the policy of the place you are going to is far better in my opinion than those that just give them to you and expect you to be able to get them out, as you get so worried when you can't that you never try again. So keep trying and try pratcing the procedure without the lenses as practice makes perfect.

21 Using Contact Lenses

I tried contacts for the first time the other day. The optition was great I had real trouble getting them in but she gave me helpfull little hints (like trying to aim higher as I was going too low). I only managed to get the lense in the left eye and I couldn't get it out. After about 40 minutes of trying she told me to make another appointment as otherwise I would really irritate my eyes.

She also told me to practice touching my eye and I have noticed that I have been getting better. Also the advice I found here about making sure that you hold your eyelashes out of the way seems to have made a big difference as well.

I am now confident that I will be able to get the lenses in both eyes but I just hope that I can get them out again (that seemed to be a bit harder.)

12 Tea House vs Coffee Shop

Hi Stephen,
Let me quote you "Evening actually extended from dust to bedtime according to definition!" I didnt mean you were wrong in replacing evening with night, but that your grammar was wrong - "Should JS Uses". Anyways, as ILH pointed out, what if it was really night? Once again, it wasnt the word night, just the structure.
As for your comment "BTW, ILH you better learn how to speak proper English otherwise your friends may not understand you." Trust me, no offense, but I think ILH speaks better english than you.
I wouldnt bother with these posts, but everytime I read your post, it is either putting someone down about their english/ about how much you know about "North America".

11 Tea House vs Coffee Shop

Hi Stephen,
ILH didn't say anything wrong, its you who made the mistake, its not "should JS uses evening instead of night" its "had JS used the word evening instead of night then the sentence would have had a different touch." And according to the first definition in Webster, evening is the latter part and close of the day and early part of the night (this is the most widely accepted definition, not the bedtime).

The other thing wrong about what you said was, there is no morning or evening in chinese which isnt true, and is not irrelevant to what ILH was saying. Because the word night had nothing to do with the misunderstanding, it is adding "spent" before night that made the difference. As ILH pointed out, Jianshuo could have also said "I met some of my good friends in a teahouse at Lujiazui in Shanghai last night". And finally what if it is was really night as in after 12am or even 2 am?
It wasnt the word night but the word structure that gave it a different meaning.

My first impression when I read "I spent the night" was that he slept overnight at Lujiazui in Shanghai (weird as it might have been) and also not what Jilin misconstrued as "sleeping with someone".
Just my 2 cents

The government should have a system to help those poor children to survive, to look for a better life, to keep away from being used by adaults. Meanwhile, the Chinese citizens who enjoy a comfortable living condition should be encouraged to help them too. I just read an entry from Issac Mao, that "Evergreen Charity Fund" (长青教育基金) was established by UCI, MPVC, etc. in Shanghai. This is really encouraging.

7 Network Infrustucture in my Home in Shanghai

I have same comment as Martin posted on Sept 14, 04. I don't know whether the slow speed to websites outside of China is due to filtering/blocking or just China telecom is trying to save money by having too many customer share bandwidth for international traffic. This is really frustrating at times and is a definite negative for international business. I wish China telecom would offer an option for those of us who might be willing to pay more for better international access.

3 MovableType Successfully Installed on Windows XP

Thanks for the advice. I'm not sure if that was the problem, but after I re-installed ActivePerl 5.6.1 build 633 it started working. Now the only problem is that mt-check.cgi hangs:

Sometimes it gets a little bit farther than the "HTML::Template (version >= 2)..." statement. I have set my CGI script timeout to 999999 but that doesn't fix it. Any further advice would be extremely welcome! Thanks!

2 MovableType Successfully Installed on Windows XP

When I first installed Perl successfully earlier this year, all I needed to do was run the MSI Installer and everything worked perfectly. Now any version I try to install and run the Perl Package Manager from I get this message:

###################################################
'perl' is not recognized as an internal or external command,
operable program or batch file.
You do not have Perl in your PATH.
###################################################

I had never seen this message before. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling both current versions but nothing has worked yet. I tried reading the documentation and searching for answers on the internet but I have found nothing to remedy this yet. It is probably a simple solution I am overlooking? Right now I am currently uninstalling it for the 3rd time and I am running out of ideas. Thanks!

1 MovableType Successfully Installed on Windows XP

Dear Jian Shuo Wang & Friends,

This page of yours has been very helpful to me in the past. Using the information you have provided here has helped me set up moveable type on my windows xp server running IIS 5. In the past i've successfully installed perl and configured it for MT a few times. I've even setup php & mysql to run another blogging system called 'pmachine'. However, I've recently wiped my primary drive and reloaded all of the needed programs to restart MT but for some reason for the first time I am having a very difficult time installing perl! I know this isn't particulary a perl forum, but i've read all of the documentation and searched everywhere for an answer, uninstalled and attempted to re-install perl 5.6 & 5.8 to no avail and i was wondering if anyone that posts to or reads this page could make a suggestion? I keep running the MSI installer and it says it is successfully installing perl (which it has done in the past) but perl just does not load? Have i gone totally insane or senile? I've asked activestate support but haven't heard anything back yet. I would be very grateful to anyone who could point me in the right direction again! Thanks!
