24 Photos of Carrefour after Boycott

Where's the logic? Anyone home? Hello?

Boycotting the French govnment by not shopping in Carrefours in China doesn't do anything but harms hundreds of Chinese Carrefour workers and and thousands of Chinese product suppliers in China.

Look at it this way: assume in Denmark, for example, some would want to boycott China by not going to Chinese restaurants in Denmark. If that would continue for long, the people in Denmark would end up paying some of the unemployment of the restaurant people there, while it would't have any impact to China.

Instead, what would work is this: Just don't travel to the country you want to boycott. That would do two things: 1) it would send a message and 2) it would do much less harm in your own country.

23 Friends Started to Boycott French Products

Chinese are consistently getting this wrong, perhaps because the media in China is completely controlled on political issues and lies to its citizens day in and day out. But what Chinese are getting wrong is that the protests in France and other advanced countries were not anti-Chinese - they were against specific policies of the Beijing Government. Chinese need to take a look at why advanced countries (the people of) are so upset with China. You are right - boycotts just do turn people into anti-French or anti-China zealots when the boycotts target a whole people.

22 Generalization Plays the Trick

Chinese citizens are confused by all of this - as the poem reflects. But finally Chinese are getting an idea of what its been like to be an American for the last hundred years. No matter what we (Americans) do we are criticized by everyone else. Sometimes we deserve the criticism and sometimes we don't. We are used to it. Chinese need to get used to it and learn how to deal with it better.

20 "The Right to Refuse Service to Anyone"

Crook, Thank You! Legal crap aside...I am a restaurant and bar owner myself. As Crook stated, it is plain and simple. Please stop trying to make it out to be more than it is. The "LAW" allows restaurants and bars the right to refuse service to whom they see fit! Period. Don't like it, try to change it. Go into a place and argue it, refuse to leave, get your ass locked up! In our business, we deal with a lot of crap. Our job is extremely demanding both physically and mentally. If you haven't worked in this business, you will NEVER understand. We do our best daily to please our customers. Although you would like to think "the customer is always right", on to many occassions do people feel that because we are "in the service industry", they can treat us like shit. I get yelled at, disrespected, degraded, threatened, etc. (over very minor details and I am extremely critical of my operation to begin with) by people who think they're someone and that it's their right to act this way. It makes me very happy to know that I have MY rights as well. I can understand that people will have issues and it is my responsibility to resolve them. The difference is, I do not have to take abuse when people want to voice there complaints in a disrespectful manner! Believe me, I run a VERY successful high end place. The people that think that because they are spending money I need to be their bitch, you've got another thing coming. Plain and simple, you don't like it, there's the door! This sign is a pre-warning. It basically says "JUST TRY IT!". Although I do not post this sign personally, I do agree with it's intent. This appears to be a Chinese restaurant that is hanging this sign. For those who have argued the posting of this sign in their establishment (or the one at Geno's in Philly). Try spending ONE day along side of the operators of these places. I guarantee you that you will change your mind about this sign by day's end. I have spent many years within this business as have my Chinese in laws. I assure you that these places have seen more levels of disrespect, discrimination, and abuse than you could ever imagine. I applaud this establishment and I feel for them for having to come to the point of having to hang this sign. They MUST have had their fill and found it important to try to be proactive about the situation.

In addition to this, I happen to live in Philly and I have frequented Geno's for years. The sign is still there and they now sell t-shirts and stickers stating "I'm in America and I speak English!". Once again, it is their right. If you do not like this, do not go there. Try to boycott and you will see that you still will not win. The MAJORITY of people in this country actually understand that as Americans, it is our requirement to learn English. This is our language. Why should there be issue with us making a pre-statement saying "you need to order in English". Why should it be required that a counter employee, making just over minimum wage, learn to speak another language in order to understand your order. I will guarantee you that the majority of the times that this person behind the counter just simply could not understand the (non English speaking) customer, they were bombarded with attitude by this customer. Now I'm not disagreeing that there is racism everywhere we go, but how stupid do you think that a business owner of over 60 years (Geno's) is? You think they woke up one day and said, "I think today I want to put up a sign to say I don't like people who can't speak English!". Get over it people! Go to France and don't attempt to speak the language. Time how long it takes for vendors to either act like they don't understand you or just simply laugh in your face!

In closing, allow me to come into your business (those of you who argue these points) and speak Chinese (or another language that you do not understand), act like I own the place and your my bitch. Sit back as I yell and scream when you make a minor mistake (or you don't understand me). Argue that I should get the entire product or service for free (do to your mistake or lack of understanding my language). And complete our transaction by laughing at how STUPID you are because of your mistake (or inability to understand me). Tell me you won't think about using your right to refuse service to who you see fit! I tell you first hand, THIS IS EXACTLY WHY THESE SIGNS ARE THERE!

19 Fingerprint for U.S. Visa

You would be able to get a multi-year visa to the US if the Chinese government would give Americans and other foreigners tourist visas that were valid for longer than 6 months. Countries normally give each others citizens visas based on reciprocity. The US has been trying for years to get China to give American tourists and businesspeople visas that would be good for longer than 6 months - but China refuses. Normally, the US would also limit your visa to 6 months but they went ahead and gave Chinese a year visa. The US wants to give 5-10 year visas to Chinese citizens that qualify for visas because they figure if you qualify once - then you qualify. So you can thank Beijing for having to go back every year.

18 Burma and my Ignorance

I was wondering about how much Chinese citizens know about Burma and your blog entry gives me an idea. I have CNN and BBC access in Shanghai and there has been a lot of news about the troubles in Burma lately. I did read one Chinese reporter's report from Burma but his report was quite naive or censored. It seems to me that China's citizens are treated like mushrooms - kept in the dark and fed s***. even on matters close to their borders.

16 Fight Between Foreigners and Local

Last year when I was hit hard by a taxi while walking in a crosswalk with the pedestrian greenlight my reaction was anger and I shattered the guy's window with my fist. I was immediately surrounded by people shouting at me in Shanghainese. The hatred in their eyes was surprising. After all, I was the only one bleeding and I felt I had a right to be angry. A Canadian-Chinese lady explained to me that the crowd was shouting anti-foreigner curses and that she would call the police before it got worse. This was right downtown in Shanghai - by Xintiandi - an upscale area of professionals. I was shocked by the treatment I received and the hatred in people's eyes.

I later thought about what would happen if a Chinese person had this situation in my country (USA) and asked myself if American's would have unanimously ganged up on the Chinese guy that had been hit by a driver. Honestly, I don't think so. They would be more likely to criticize the driver - no matter what his/her race was. I think years of nationalistic education has created a very dangerous mentality in China that could easily lead to wars.

I will be traveling from Shanghai to Beijing for a return flight to the United States in March. There are flights on China Eastern and Shanghai Airlines. Is one airline preferable? I see negative comments about China Eastern, but no mention of Shanghai Airlines...

14 Going Back to China?

In U.S., We pay a large amount of money as Income Tax. For example, a person who is single and earning $70,000 a year can only get approximate $50,000 in the end because of all types of Tax (i.e. Federal Income Tax, Social Security Tax, Medicare Tax, State and Local Tax). I wonder how much tax a person in China earning 500,000 RMB pays. Also, what about an average IT professional earning 160,000 RMB in China? Thanks.

13 Find a Job in Shanghai

Creating a special cartoon character based on an internationally popular animal. The candidate really liked the idea once you had a basic understanding of it. A Chinese (or American or expat) cartoon artist/animator have to put this animal in a cute cartoon character figure that would be incorporated in a mascot logo and eventually be the main character in a series of cartoons, both still and animated, with other characters to be developed in the future around this main character. Kind of like how Mickey Mouse was first created, and then Minnie Mouse and a series of cartoon figures after that.

11 U.S. Trip Update

The reason you probably see a tour group from China featured in The Terminal is because Asian tour groups are famous for traveling with cameras. Many Americans see these tour groups and the camera becomes a stereotype. Japanese are especially famous for always having cameras with them. But the premise of the scene in the movie is that the airport customs police are looking for anomolies among arriving passengers - and the sight of a Chinese tour group without cameras raises their suspicions. Unfortunately, the media carries the occassional story about a group of Chinese immigrants caught trying to enter the US illegally and so this scenario fits into the movie. I don't think it was meant as a slam against Chinese particularly.

10 Alcatel OT715 Software

Re: Pbkinstall error. I just spoke to BVRP software support in France. They said it is a conflict with Office 2003, but it is up to Motorola to decide if they want to fix it. The version of mobile phone tools that they sell directly will not support the newer Motorola phones. Great!

8 Shanghai SARS: Situation Severe

Excellent site for "non-official" information. I just cancelled my trip to Shanghai due to the concern of SARS. Considering the high numbers in Hong Kong and Beijing, the official tally in Shanghai seems too good to be true. It is hard to believe that Shanghai would be isolated from this epidemic given the size and mobility of the population. I hope I am wrong, because I do want to make the trip as soon as possible.

Any news on WHO's assessment of the SARS situation in Shanghai?

Keep up with the good work.

1 Net Send - Yet Another Type of Spam

To "Marketer"

Gimme a break. NET SEND spam is equivalent to someone knocking on your door every 50 seconds while you are trying to have an important conversation on the phone. If you had to put down the phone to answer the doorbell every few minutes, wouldn't you get tired of it ?

What a goofball.
