Introduce Yourself By the way, thanks for a lot of thoughtful readers' comments too! It is discussions exemplified in spaces like this that give me a profound hope for China, the world, and our common humanity. |

Introduce Yourself Hi everybody. I am Ji Haidong, a transplanted Chinese in Chicago area for more than a decade now. Pure rural Shandong stock, grown up in the 70s. Undergrad in southern China for 4 years, slacker in Beijing for less than a year. Came to the US in 1995 and stayed. Currently self-employed doing database consulting and training in the US. Would love to work on projects in my beloved homeland, and in fact all over the world. I made a few comments in the past, had a hiatus, and came back for great discussions during the whole Olympic discussion. For the most part, I am a silent observer, I learned a lot from different people's perspectives. So thanks Jian Shuo for such a wonderful platform and your great attitude! |

We Need a Bridge, Seriously Great post, Wang Jian Shuo! I have to say that great minds think alike :) Here is a shameless plug to my blog, the Ji Village News at HaidongJi.com. One passion of mine is to sharing my experience/perspective/observations as a Chinese living in the US for more than 10 years now. And I try to share that on my blog, because better understanding is crucial for the future of US, China, and the world at large. Great job, way to go! |

Flight From Shanghai to U.S. A comment on my comment: If I fly to any place that I have never been before, I still like the window seat. Sometimes the excitement of getting a good aerial view of the new city is worth the hassle. On my trip to Barcelona in February I transferred at Madrid. So on the leg from Chicago to Madrid, I picked the aisle seat, since it is the longer part of the trip over the Atlantic. I had a good rest on the plane (actually a lot of reading). From Madrid to Barcelona, I took the window seat. I got a fairly good aerial views of both Madrid and Barcelona, and the flight was short. That, to me, is the best of both worlds :) |

Flight From Shanghai to U.S. Good article Wang Jian Shuo. And good comments too. Yup, there is direct flight from ORD (Chicago O'Hare) to PVG (Shanghai Pudong) now, courtesy of American Airlines. One thing I want to add is after the novelty of traveling overseas on a big plane wears off, take the aisle seat. You get more freedom to move about and leg room also. |

Xiamen - Tiny Beautiful City Xiamen is indeed very beautiful. I attended Xiamen University from 1990-1994 and got my Bachelor degree there. I had a wonderful and memorable 4 years in that great city. I like your pictures, especially the ones in your first post about Xiamen. GuLang Yu is absolutely wonderful. And the ring road around the island is nice too, a lot of nice beaches and picnic areas along the way. When you go there next time, I highly recommend Xiamen Botanic Garden. Xiamen University, Nan Pu Tuo Temple, Wu Lao Feng (accessible via the Botanic Garden and Xiamen University) are also worth a visit. I have some pictures here. They were taken in 2004. http://www.flickr.com/photos/jihaidong/tags/xiamen/ I miss the city and the time I spent there a lot. Someday I will bring the whole family there. To Loretta, SanYa is a city on HaiNan island. |
