Chinese people is the only 'victims' if China has human right abuse, not French. You are appreciated to say something for the Chinese, but you can not distort the voice of their own. French is always proud of their everything. I have to admit French wine is the best for many people. But Chinese will suffer a lot if they don't buy French wines? Friends Started to Boycott French Products to Wayfarer, As you can see the response of Jian Shuo Wang to Confused, Chinese is particularly against French/Paris government's attitude toward China and its people. I have been reading many articles about what's going on in France long before the torch reply. France is the active supporter to publicly support pro-Tibet protesters. Many French cities/towns have been hanging Tibetan flag in front of their city hall. Many (not minor) French did take a active part in the protest against not only the torch relay but also personal attacks on our Chinese people. I read a lot of accounts from Chinese supporters who were there at their own. Did you see that in other countries? I am at California and I have not yet seen one single case. I also participated in the San Fran torch replay and have a very close confrontation with the pro-Tibet protesters. I feel very strongly that they were very rude compared with the supporters. But I also understand the police did a great job and a handful of protesters can not represent the friendly America people. I can see that, I can feel that. My conclusion is natually against French people and its products. Trust me, my major is Finance and I also know boycott is very bad to the world economy. But I just can't convince myself of any purchase from French brands when I am always reminded by my human memory of the bad feeling. Knowing something bad to the world economy and trying to avoid it doesn't necessarily mean that perception overrides my personal and natural feeling. Finally, I do appreciate your perspective of reasonableness on the issue. |

Friends Started to Boycott French Products As a Chinese who studied in the UK in 2002 and is working in the US now, and have been reading much more western media than Chinese ones. I think I will be less emotional than average Chinese to say boycott to something foreign. I ever travelled Paris before and loved the city as well. But the love has gone already, and I have admitted the firm decision is made already in my mind. For the rest of my life I will not touch anything about France which is no longer friendly to me. The French was just not willing to protect a week disabled lady who was so determined to protect the torch. You see? I meant the power of the rich city and the disabled. The rich is so weak compared with our disabled lady of so powerful strength! You can imagine how an average Chinese will react, especially after the Argentina torch relay was run so smoothly. It is not that the protesters in Paris were too strong, it is the incompetence of Paris in terms of thinking naturally. P.S. Someone will say there had been little impact on Japanese goods sale in China even when the Chinese launched a big boycott to Japan in 2005. But it is irrelevant to Paris chaos. We have been boycotting Japanese goods for the history they'd done for Chinese people. Many young people boycott without full knowledge of the history so many of them don't engage in the boycott too much. But this time, we witness the history which pass us a so direct and strong feeling lasting through our lifetime. That's the difference. |

Are American Economically Family-Independent I think that there are generalities that could be said to be true of any country, how they are similar internally and different from other countries; there are also pockets of similarities between countries. I stayed with my grandparents in the summers on their farm. Living there were 4 generations - a great grandparent, 2 grandparents and an uncle. As this was in a rural area, it was not all that unusual and I strongly suspect that similar situations were scattered throughout the country in urban, suburban, and rural areas. As to Social Security, the problem as I see it is that the program has expanded well beyond its initial scope. It started in the mid 30s with workers and employers each contributing. A few years later, spouses of the worker, widows and children of the worker, and those who retired and had never paid into the system were added. The latter being a particular burden to the initial system. The taxes were later raised to 4% with 2% from the worker and 2% from the employer. Later still retirement age was reduced from 65 to 62. These and a few other changes contributed to the large expansion of the system and Congress was always adding to the benefits (so they could get re-elected). Perhaps the current largest problem is the number of workers expected to retire within the next 20 or so years. Birth rates have gone down and as the system is funded only by current workers we will shortly have more folks receiving benefits than folks paying into it. Insolvancy is expected around the year 2020. Indeed, the program is a huge mess and elected officials lack the courage to fix it. |

Strengthen the Control of Speech We came back from visiting China this January. While visiting some cave in Hunan I noticed on the drive back at least 2 satellite dishes. They were out in the rural area and given the houses I doubt they were embassies, consulates, or businesses. The dishes were the large type approximately 6 feet in diameter. Must See - Coffee Facing the Bund My favourite ghetto in Pudong side was actually not by the Bund, but in Jade on 36 at the new Shangri-La tower. I always thing the Pearl Tower is a rip off, with the same price, I can visit Cloudy 9 at the Grand Hyatt for free before 8PM and enjoy a glass of bubby. Also I enjoy wine and dine quite much and the latest place I will definately enjoy is The Kitchen where italian food is served with an open kitchen. Quite tough for to fine tho, you can walk on the road right next to the Pearl Tower and walk till the end where you see Haiou Fang (?) and then turn left. |

China Eastern Airlines I had a very bad experience with China Eastern yesterday flying off from Chengdu to Shanghai. Like you, I only keep 2 mileage programs, one of them is China Eastern. After yesterday's flight, I told my friends that I gave CE a new nickname, Meiyo Air. All passenger boarded the flight at the same time. I am the type who get on the flight and will ask for a pillow and will just take a nap and be fresh off. I was among the first 20 passengers who boarded and then I asked if I could have a pillow after I seated, the stewardess who was handing out yesterday's newspaper replied right away, "All were given out!" and I looked around, and nobody seem to have any, and me and a few passengers were taken aback by the comment, because it's very unusual. And again, they didn't even offer blackets... The flight was supposed to leave around 14:00 and it was a bit late, which I totally understand because that happens. But due to the time slot, a lot of travellers were actually at the airport quite early, and a big portion of them didn't have lunch. So after 1 hour it took off, they finally started to serve the drinks. A lady who sat in front of me were asking if there would be meal served. And again the stewardess answered, "None" which she later explained that there was no meal box or any snack avaliable in the flight except the small baby packs of peanuts. And later the 2nd round of drinks, the OJ were out. It's a good thing that I only drink water on flight, so it didn't effect me much. The flight yesterday is the most unprofessional service team I had ever seen in my years of travel, and a part from the service itself, a lot of things were unprepared. I hope this is just an individual situation, because I do fly CE quite often because for the Econ class they seem to be more comfortable, but just the attidue and service had been going down hill. |

Getting U.S. Visa in China As an American, I'm really sorry to hear how bad this process is. Getting a visa for any country (including China, but especially for Russia) is a major pain, but it sounds like getting a U.S. visa is a nightmare. I hope that people will see beyond the Consulate. Most regular people in the U.S. are really nice and will go out of their way to help you. And most of us (according to recent polls) want a new administration to take over our government in the upcoming elections in 2006 and 2007 -- hopefully one that thinks more globally and understands that the visa process is critical to America's success. After all, the co-founders of Intel, Google, and Sun were not Americans and had U.S. visas! |

Caller ID fee charged depending on your phone plan. Some plans waive the fee and some don't. Hire a Taxi? Avoid Rainy Friday Hey JS, Tell me about getting a cab on Friday. I actually had the experience once on 29th April, which was a Friday right, but the next day was a working day for everybody, so I thought it could be easy. On the intersection on Yan'an Lu/Zhengning Lu, it took me over one hour from 8:15 to 9:15 pm to get a cab. Donation in China Donation is indeed a good way of putting "extra" wealth back to community. As far as I know, that the situation is a little bit different in China. 1. In America & Europe, donators will actually benefit from a tax cut when in China, they just started to discuss this issue after they realized how much Chinese enterprises and individuals had donated after the trunami last year. 2. How trustful a charity can be? I have no clue... I once heard from a friend that sometimes the organizors will use a big chunck of money on other causes. A lot of charties in China still don't have a clear financial planning or open booking for us to track... 3. There are certain organizations that I would not, I repeat, would not deal with. Surprise! PVG: From Pudong Airport to Hangzhou Dear Fred, For EU passport holder, you can enjoy 5-day stay in China without a visa if you enter the country from Hong Kong/Shenzhen border, and leave the country the same way. You don't need an invitation letter to get a 3-month one time entry visa. Actually, if you can talk to the Chinese embassy in Frankfurt and mentioning that you would like to visit Canton Fair, and they should be able to grant you the visa within 1 to 2 working days. Don't Let Social Software Become Spam Ware I had a long history with SMS.ac I used it back in 2001 and it was wonderful then. See, me and my then boyfriend were in a long distant relationship, so SMS from/to China/Germany every day by using SMS.ac was one way to save some communication cost. And in late 2002, SMS.ac was having a change in their website, and telephone number from China was not avaliabe to register, and send/receive SMS, so I stop using it. Up till last month, I suddenly receive emails (the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th) from SMS.ac asking me to register from quite a number of my friends, and some of them are China Mobile users. I logged into SMS.ac to see if the service is open to China Mobile now. Nope, it wasn't. I was having difficulties to activate my account. I wasn't pleased to receive this kinda invitiation to a service I wouldn't benefit from. I ended up setting my email filter to block all the emails from the domain. The similar case is hi5.com which I received quite some emails from them too. The only social network I use now is Friendster, but I seldom log into it anymore. There are more ads then it was first came up. |

Life in a Low Cost Labor World i thought this may be a moving description after seeing title. well,it is no good using this kind of tongue to tell us "amazing" story like hiring ayi as code scanner. everyone are struggling for living including u. if rich enough, why not donate like ur boss Bill Gates. till now every farmer must hand in 79 yuan as tax per year for country construction instead of 35 yuan from citizens. however, most of the fortune flows to cities like Shanghai so that Shanghaiese or Beijingese can live a seemingly better life just selling and buying houses of their own. and the fact is that there is still no inheritance tax in China. they especially their children need helping hands but not putting this story into a kidding joke. ----a fresh-graduate's way of thinking |

Going Back to China? Hey Wang, First I have to say that you have the most fastinating blog about Shanghai. I am loving it. It sure really gives me a lot of insider information... And to you Jacob, As for foreigners and Chinese, we pay as the same percentage when it comes to income, but the tax free amount for foreigners is actually higher. Take Shanghai as an example, the first RMB4000 you make every month will be tax free, while for local chinese, the amount is only RMB1000. Sorry that I really don't remember the percentage, since last time I touched this issue was like almost one year ago... I hope this help. Cheers, K. |

Long Vacation Ends Jian Shuo: So interesting, your site, your blog, and your pictures. Thank you for all the effort that goes into mainting this. I look forward to getting a peek into life in China by keeping up with your blog. I was in China on an exchange program in 1986 (Hangzhou). Things were in some ways very different then, and, from what I can tell from this distance, in some ways pretty close to the same. But, wow, the growth spurt the big cities have been going through!! Shanghai has changed so much in 18 years! The URL I linked just shows pictures I took as I travelled around China. I'm hoping to gather the photos of some of my fellow students and link them to that page sometime this year. Hopefully, though old, the photos will be interesting to you and some of your readers. Shanghai is Experiencing Energy Crisis at 新街口(xin jie kou) which is CBD in nanjing,all the shopping malls cannot start their bussiness until 12:00 every day. and all the air conditioners cannot run unless the temperature is above 32 degrees. On rush hour, some factories and schools and residential area,where the electricity may be cut off. However,seems that chinese government plans to start several nuclear power station dealing with this energy crisis. apparently, energy crisis will not bring the positive effect on economic develepment. |

Net Send - Yet Another Type of Spam "For most, they dont know how to turn them off (unless they have read this whole posting) and they have to either live with it or have to pay someone to fix the problem." I have just seen an advertisment on a net send pop up advertising how to stop pop ups for ever, how ironic. I also heard from a friend that there are some places charging people ?.50 per minute for a phone call to tell people how to stop net send. Pop up stoppers do work for internet browsing, I use a free version of one myself, but it dosent stop net send. People need to be educated how to stop it, but hey, if they are silly enough to fork out for it, hell mend 'em. The sooner everyone knows how to stop this the better I say. |

Net Send - Yet Another Type of Spam I was quite annoyed to read the comments of "so called marketer" posted on December 20, 2002 at 02:17 PM and I hope he reads the following. First of all the owner of this site got it on one of the top search engine pages not because he has used an innocent corporate orientated program to send unsolicited messages to everyone and anyone, or has he used any sort of unsolicited email. He has got it there because of people like the "so called marketer" and people want to know how to get rid of the net send pop ups, so they have searched the web to find pages like this which might offer solutions. SPAM is unsolicited messages sent without request, hence this new form of "so called marketing" using net send is indeed as the site owner puts it SPAM. I have not given my IP address to anyone asking for ads to be sent to me. If I gave my email address to a website, fair enough, they can send me emails. If I purchase a TV and TV licence to watch "commercial TV" I dont mind ads. Then there is the billboards that the "so called marketer" says we should shoot, but at least they serve a purpose, what they are not doing is invading my privacy. Net send is not supposed to be used in this way as the "so called marketer" should well know if he/she has any formal qualifications in how marketing should be done. I agree that it is an intuitive way of getting your message to people, but it should not be done at the expense of peoples privacy and I hope it is stopped very soon. Thanks for reading. |
