Car Insurance in Shanghai If being paid with US salary and living US life in Shanghai, nothing to complain at all (well, weather and traffic are exceptions maybe). With $2 meals everywhere and $300 rent, there is a reason for the existence of luxuaries, like golf in Shanghai. |

Slow Internet Connection at Home I am amazed by your effecient using time. With such a slow internet connection and the large workload which I guess you have, you still got time to build a Chinese blog and a English blog as well. This really makes me, maybe not only me, feel aweful. |

No Baggars Premitted on Metro? I remember years ago, outside a hotel in Pudong, almost everyday for a certain period of time, could see 3-5 kids about 5-8 yrs old, they were not sound miserable, and even run and chase people. I don't see any sign of searching humanity from their face. Really, it's very hard to know what to do to those children. |

Where to Study Chinese, Beijing or Shanghai? I'm on exchange at Tsinghua University in Beijing now, and know lots of people who are enrolled in the Language Programme for Foreigners. Also, Beijing University, BLCU and several other universities also offer language courses to foreigners. The courses are not bad, and Beijing mandarin is definitely closer to putonghua than Shanghainese. Shanghai is more cosmopolitan and expensive, but Beijing is certainly highly developed too with plenty of foreigners and the sort of comforts we're used to are available for a price. The nightlife is decent here, with a range of clubs, bars and lounges around. Paul van Dyk played in Tango recently. For convenience's sake, it's definitely better to stay close to campus- traffic jams can be absolutely horrid. |
