41 Why Fudan University Only Accept Cash

4000 is not a big amount for most Chinese. The financial system is also different than most western countries, specially for individuals. Don't worry of that, it's safe when u carry that cash in China, but do not handle it in ur hand when u r walking in street, haha. common sense in everywhere.

36 San Jose Impression

Hi,

Glad you are doing ok. I wrote to you once before and am glad you have safely been arriving and departing into and out of San Jose.

I agree with your impression about the increasing level of boredom that is overtaking the USA. Partly I believe this is because we in the USA are seeking to spend less money on things, are therefor encouraging vendors to make products more cheaply, which in turn drives production offshore to lower standard of living manufacturing locations, which is good for those locations. That is called globalization, and I believe it produces the danger of boredom and sameness, which you have observed.
However, it is our job to find ways to remain interested and excited about life, without depending on stores like Macy's to give us that excitement.
Anyway, this is a bit long-winded, sorry, but I am glad you are safe and I have appreciated your blog for several years now, even though at the moment I am traveling only in the USA and have not been to Shanghai for about one year.
Have fun *:-)

27 What does Happiness Depend on

Take a look at this article on money and happiness:

http://www.yesmagazine.org/article.asp?id=866

basically, they correlate only at income levels that are very low (you at the very least need food, housing, etc.), but above a certain level, the return on "happiness" from money doesn't rise very much. If you know computer science, then we can say that it is an "asymptotic function" of income. :-)

26 Helping by Hiring

This is the most excellent article that I've read for a while. The insight cannot be more correct: you don't help a group of people (or the economy in general) grow by just giving them free money. By teaching someone "how to fish" they can be better off for the many days ahead instead of just today or tomorrow. I believe if this is practiced very thoroughly in China, the 21st century will belong to China, since the majority of the people there will have the knowledge and skills for long term productivity.

22 Gasoline Price Goes Up

Jian Shuo, you are a star. I am travelling to Nanning (Guangxi) in September for a holiday and am very seriously thinking of living permanantly in China. Your blog has given me more good information about life and living in China than all the guide books and info sites put together. It is also far more positive than comments, posts or sites written by many of the moaning and groaning expatriates who cannot look beyond the end of their noses. I can understand why China and Japan stayed closed to foreigners for so many centuries.
Keep up the good work, Sir, and I hope you, your friends and your lovely wife enjoy success and happiness in all you do.

19 Using Contact Lenses

Yeah, I had the same thing last year when I decided to get contact lenses. Your first biological reaction is always to protect your eyes, so it is natural to want to squeeze it shut when putting something in there. The best advice I can give is to practice putting it on and off 5 times every morning, and 5 times every night, and you'll soon get used to it. Try this: look straight ahead and pretend there is something you have to see very far away, and gradually put the lenses on. Works for me, heh.

18 Hardship of Living without Twix

My uncle (from Shanghai) went with his co-workers on a business trip to Egypt and they told me they ended up fighting for those "salted vegetables" (those salty brown things I can't translate this into english) because they couldn't get used to the Egyptian foods. Also, my uncle said when he came to the US for a brief visit they really couldn't stand eating salads...in the end they said they were ready to "vomit". Hehe, all those little detials indeed makes a difference.

14 Foggy Shanghai

Heh. Be glad it is just foggy. Here in Ithaca, N.Y., it's just snow everywhere. And so cold you could probably use the outdoors as a refridgerator if you don't have one. (Actually, in the 40s-50s [I think, I'm bad with history] people did use their garage as refridgerator since back then fridges were not that common).

The joke here at Cornell among my friends is that we *want* global warming to happen... ;-)

13 Professional English

Yup. When my cousins (from Shanghai) write to me in e-mail they sometimes drive me insane with bad grammar and punctuation and spelling (not that it's their fault). It's like scratching an itch -- when I see something like "...end of one sentence.beginning of another sentence...", mentally I just want to put a space between the sentences and capitalize the start of the next sentence!!

7 Loooong Domain Name - Pi

I read an interesting book called "Intelligent Memory" by a John Hopkins University Professor, and in there, they said those skills are a subset of a larger skill called "chunking", where a person can remember large number of things by associating chunks of numbers with things they can easily remember. Some people would weave 'stories' about the numbers so they could remember it easily, other use a mneumonic system (like "three" is "tree" and "four is door"), so 34 could be remembered as a tree-house with a door when you want to leave it. Interesting stuff. :-)

3 Wireless (WiFi) Hot Spots in Shanghai

Hmm. I have no idea how you would keep track of the MAC addresses of those who use your WiFi spot. But my guess would be for you to treat your WiFi as a router to the Internet (and I'm sure there are plenty of literature out there that talks about logging at the router level for all users). Do you know if the Chinese government treats MAC addresses as "legally binding"?
