45 Shanghai not as Safe as Before

SHANGHAI NOT SAFE AS BEFORE...

yes!

copy & paste:

Pollution and the excessive use of chemicals in foodstuffs are sending cancer rates soaring in China, where it is already the number one killer, state press said Monday.

Cancer was the most lethal disease in both urban and rural areas last year, the China Daily said, citing a recent health ministry survey.

According to ministry statistics, it has been China's leading killer since at least 2002 but is now rising at an alarming rate.

The survey, carried out in 30 cities and 78 counties, found the death rate from cancer rose by 19 per cent in urban areas and 23 per cent in rural areas, although the report did not give a time frame.

"The main reason behind the rising number of cancer cases is that pollution of the environment, water and air is getting worse by day," the paper quoted Chen Zhizhou, a cancer expert at the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences, as saying.

"Many chemical and industrial enterprises are built along rivers so that they can dump waste into water easily... the contaminated water has directly affected soil, crops and food."

Excessive use of fertilisers and pesticides also pollute underground water, he said, while farmers are using additives on pigs, poultry and vegetables to make them grow faster.

Air pollution is a major cause of lung cancers, as harmful granules enter the lungs and cannot be discharged, the report said.

Large amounts of formaldehyde and related compounds also are widely used in home renovation materials and furniture, further polluting the air in homes.

"A high rate of cancer deaths has become a reality in areas where the environment is heavily polluted," the paper said, citing numerous examples of "cancer villages" in China that have high rates of deaths attributed to the disease.

Beautiful Home for rent in Pudong, Shanghai, 10 minutes north of Jin Qiao Carrefour:
. 300 Square Meters (3000 Square Feet) Living Area
. 4 bedrooms plus home office
. 3 full bathrooms, all very nice
. 500 Square Meter Yard with Trampoline
. Backs onto Forrested area - very peaceful environment - good air quality
. US$4000/mo.

We contracted all the finishing work in this home ourselves and used the best quality fixtures, carpets, tiles, etc, and the most environmentally friendly paints and woods. Accounting Rule Changes Should

By JAMES T. AREDDY
February 27, 2006; Page C10

SHANGHAI -- China's plan to substantially adopt international accounting standards next year should offer investors more information about the actual value of companies listed on the country's stock exchanges.

Starting in 2007, companies listed on the Shanghai and Shenzhen exchanges will be required to largely adopt International Financial Reporting Standards for their financial reports, China's Ministry of Finance said earlier this month. Authorities are expected to publish details of the new accounting code soon...

20 Where to Study Chinese, Beijing or Shanghai?

Hello, all. I think I can give some clear advice about where to learn Mandarin. If money is no option, then the ICLP program in Taipei is THE BEST, totally without peer. Even if you care more about learning simplified characters, it's still worth it to go there. I know over a dozen different people who came to Taiwan with no Chinese background and after studying there for one year all of them could read newspapers hardly using a dictionary, and could understand 95% of what's on TV here. It is expensive, though.

http://ccms.ntu.edu.tw/~iclp/

The second best option is the IUP, or the "Stanford Program" in Beijing. It is much like ICLP in teaching methods and price. Unfortunately, instructors usually only stay there for a couple of years, where as ICLP instructors often stay for a whole decade. As a result the quality of the instructors is slightly worse. This program is still far, far above anything else on the mainland, or even in elite western colleges.

http://ieas.berkeley.edu/iup/

Now, if you DON'T have tons of money to spend here's my advice: Don't waste your money on vastly over-priced low quality programs that basically rip off foreigners who can afford it. BCLU, Beida, Fudan,Shida (either Beijing or Taipei), Jiaotong and similar schools, almost NEVER get westerners up to a level where they can read the paper and understand TV within a year. And they charge you WAY more than Chinese students have to pay for real degree programs at the same schools. To top it off it's pretty hard to find Chinese people in Beijing, Shanghai, or god help you,Taipei, that will be willing to be your friends if you don't speak English with them.

I strongly recommend Harbin. First of all, people there speak about as standard of Chinese as you can find. Second, if you're white, people will think you're Russian and not necessarily always badger you with English. Third, room and board is only 500RMB (~62USD) per month. Also, after your Chinese studies have progressed far enough, you can enter the university and take the same classes for the same money that the Chinese students pay. To top it off Harbin is beautiful, very multicultural, and has great food!

17 Black Day for Shanghai Stock Market

Shanghai Stock Index Slumps to Six-Year Low on Share-Sale Plan

By Zhang Shidong

May 9 (Bloomberg) -- Shanghai's key stock index slid to a six-year low after the securities regulator picked four companies for a trial sale of state-owned shares in preparation for the disposal of government holdings valued as high as $264 billion.

"Investors are concerned the plan will release more shares into the market and cause prices to fall in the short term,'' said Zhu Ping, who helps manage $483 million as investment director at GF Securities Co. in Guangzhou.

Baoshan Iron & Steel Co. led declines after 1.65 billion of additional shares sold by the company began trading, reducing the government's holdings and fueling concern that the value of its existing stock will drop.

The Shanghai Composite Index, which tracks yuan-denominated
A shares and foreign-currency B shares, fell 28.31, or 2.4 percent, to 1130.83 at the 3 p.m. local time close, the lowest since May 19, 1999.
The Shenzhen Composite Index, which tracks the smaller of the two Chinese markets, dropped 9.38, or 3.3 percent, to 274.19, the lowest since Oct. 7, 1996.

Both indexes had their biggest declines since Oct. 14. Markets were shut last week for the Labor Week holiday.

Shanghai Zi Jiang Enterprise Group Co., Sany Heavy Industry Co., Tsinghua Tongfang Co. and Hebei Jinniu Energy Resources Co. received approval from the China Securities Regulatory Commission for share sales, according to company statements to the Shanghai and Shenzhen exchanges. Trading in their shares was suspended.

11 Discrimination Against Foreigners in Shanghai?

Connie- I'd say white people face even more discrimination in China. Sure we can be English teachers, but being white is a disadvantage for a lot of other jobs... no matter how good our Chinese is. Furthermore, many Chinese will just try to use English with white people, regardless if those white people can speak Chinese or not, and regardless if they can speak Mandarin or not. I'm honestly telling you if I could look asian, I would.

A lot of your complaints are about being treated like a "normal Chinese person". I'd love to be treated that way. It would be great to not be stared at, or have people ask my girlfriend why she "picked a foreigner".

If people treat you normally, then just improve your Mandarin. Once you speak well enough you can fit into society, get a normal job, and "not be judged by the color of your skin but by the content of your character" just as MLK would have liked it.

10 Really Living in Shanghai

Ok, it looks like a lot of you are prejudiced against Americans. That's your business. However, for those willing to listen to one, I would like to correct a few incorrect statements above.

First off the claim that only 3% of Americans can speak a second langauge fluently is rediculous. About 15% of the population speaks Spanish fluently, over 2,000,000 Americans speak Chinese fluntly, about 900,000 people speak western Farsi, 800,000 speak Japanese, and many many others speak other langauges. Check ethnologue.com

The claim that only 5% of us have passports is equally false. It's actually about 25%. I realize 25% is not a lot, but consider this. I grew up in Colorado. From my house, I could drive 1,000 miles (that's 1600 km) in any direction and STILL be in the borders of the US. Much like China, the US is a very large and diverse country. My home state is larger than many European countries. Furthermore, many countries will allow Americans to enter without a passport. I personally visited Canada, Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua before getting a passport.

Finally for all of you ranting about how closed minded Americans are think about this: Being politically correct in the US REQUIRES that one embraces diversity. If a TV show, advertising campaign or company mocks people of a certain race, nationality, or religion there is a SEVERE backlash. People lose jobs (such as the Denver Nuggets coach did after calling someone who cursed at him and spit at him a "Mexican asshole"), companies get sued and polititians get kicked out of office for such prejudices. In Canada on the other hand there is a popular show titled, "Talking with Americans" which is based solely on making fun of Americans. In my country no show based upon prejudice (be it nationalist, racist, sexist, etc..) stays on the air. Ishihara, the mayor of Tokyo has publicly stated that in the event of unrest, police should first target the sankokumin (3rd worlders/SE aisans). He's wildly popular. How long could the mayor of New York last if he said, "if there's a riot, shoot the niggers first"?

People are pissed off at the US government. Fine. But it isn't fair to say that the people care nothing for other cultures. Diversity is valued a great deal in the US. The govenor of our most powerful state is a foreigner. How many other countries are that open? Our #3 man in the national government is black. How many racial minoritys are on John Howard's staff? How about Tony Blair's staff? Do you especially love either of them? If Americans are so ignorant, then why do so many foreigners go study at their schools? And how do such ignorant people do so well both in business and research?

Maybe it's just a good idea to avoid stereotypes or prejudice aimed at anyone... even Americans.

9 Is English Skill That Important

"Mark, I can understand that. It is (sadly) true that people are more interested to learn English than teach you Chinese. That is the reason many foreigners enjoy talking with Ayi, drivers instead of university students - people who can not speak English will be more helpful to learn Chinese."

Jian Shuo Wang, I'm afraid you missed my main point. By their unwillingness to speak the local language with white people, Taiwanese (and probably most other Chinese also) make us outsiders in society. Do you suggest that immigrants to your country speak only with "Ayi"? Those university students might be important contacts to make for the future.

This isn't about finding people to "teach me Chinese". I really don't see a way for racial integration if everyone of a different skin color is automatically spoken to in a foriegn language. Actually, I've met a few non Hua-ren who were born here. They are still treated like outsiders, and strangers still try to speak English to them even though they have lived in Taiwan their whole lives...

As I said in my previous post, as I was growing up I loved Chinese culture. But here is my question: Why should I continue bothering to study a language when most of the people who can speak it are too racist to speak it to me? I see foreigners who stay here for years without learning Chinese, and Taiwanese locals treat them great. On the other hand, when they encounter people like me who have put forth the time to learn how to speak decent Chinese they are not so friendly. Why bother learning Chinese anymore? I will always be white, and no matter how good my Chinese is people will still want to use their bad English with me.

Is this the kind of culture that will make China a strong country in the future?

3 Is English Skill That Important

Reading this post made me feel a little sad. I'm from the southwestern part of the US, and I'm really interested in foreign languages. I grew up with Spanish around (since more than 15% of the people in my state speak Spanish, not English at home). Later, I studied Japanese in college.

Anyway, my experience with Chinese has been terrible. As I grew up I really loved Chinese culture, Chinese movies, Chinese food, etc... My school didn't offer Chinese langauge classes, but after I graduated from college I moved to Taiwan, hoping to learn Chinese. After moving here, I've been taking Chinese classes at Shifandaxue for nearly a year. The classes are ok, and my reading is improving, but I'm learning almost NOTHING from daily life!

Why? It's because Taiwanese are so f#$@ing obsessed with English, that as soon as they see a foreign-looking (i.e. WHITE) guy, they use English. Even though I gave up my job, and travelled 10,000 miles from home, I still can't have a Chinese language environment, and it's all because of how crazy they are about English. I guess there's a racial element too. I have an ABC friend who speaks much worse Chinese than me, but nobody pushes her to switch to English when they talk with her. People don't even know where I'm from, they just see the color of my skin and then assume I MUST speak English. I'd give anything just to be able to find a place where people would just speak to me in Chinese (even if my Chinese is only so-so).

One last thing I've thought of... English is actually only the world's 3rd most spoken langague, according to ethnologue.com

#3 English 470,000,000 speakers
#2 Spanish 490,000,000 speakers
#1 Mandarin 1,200,000,000 speakers
