14 What you Miss in Shanghai?

I have been only visiting Shanghai as a tourist but anyway ...

What I miss from Shanghai?
- that odd feeling when I realise that I really do not understand anything written in the signs - that is such a funny feeling for a Westerner, I like it
- the various restaurants - the variety of those, food in general
- people - there are always people somewhere in Shanghai
- Century Park
- the tv sets in taxis and buses
- Jin Mao Tower and Grand Hyatt, Century Eggs in GH breakfast
- The Bund
- the smell of stinky tofu (maybe next time I will actually try it)

What else ... many things but I listed the things I got to my mind at first.

13 Pre-Paid GPRS Sim Card in China

How is CMCC customer service if a foreigner calls in there? Can we get GPRS plan activated using English or should we learn to ask it in Chinese?

11 Shanghainese Girl Marrying Foreigners

Nick, so true. People from different cultures can teach so much to each other. Cross cultural relationships are helping everyone to understand other cultures.

10 Shanghainese Girl Marrying Foreigners

Jianshuo, you are right.

I try to believe that people get married because of love and they fall in love because of personality. I don't believe in nationality or anything like that when considering the relationships. Of course different people have different kind of personality and it also affects what kind of people they feel attractive and who they fall in love with.

But what I know? Maybe my view isn't so true :-)

I have found myself in a airplane travelling to Shanghai because there is a girl waiting for me in Shanghai, I didn't fall in love because she was beautiful and from Shanghai. I fell in love because of her personality and how she looked at life. Too bad that it did end recently but not because of nationality.

And I might be a foreigner and sometimes it is a good thing for us Westerners to feel like a foreigner to remind us that there is world outside of Europe and North America too. The most importantly, she never thought me as a foreigner and I never thought her as a Chinese girl from Shanghai.

Did someone get my point ... been long day already.

9 The Changing Shanghai

You are so right and it is difficult for the foreigners to understand the speed. At least for me.

My first trip to Shanghai was in September 2004. I stayed at the Hilton and watched the lights in the evening from my hotel room and admired the view. I am a big fan of cityviews and the lights in the night. I didn't have much time as I was just visiting for the weekend, long story, I might tell you that some other time :)

I came back in September 2005. I had kind of lost my heart for China and wanted to learn more about it and I wanted to visit it again. I had so many USA trips already behind me and I thought that I do not get much more from there any longer. Not entirely true but my interest just shifted to China. And I had one much more important reason to come back to China. Again, I stayed at the Hilton and I was amazed how I didn't remember seeing two of the buildings nearby before. They must have built them during the year. And I cannot remember the second terminal in Pudong International airport either ...

In November they were building all the time the new building next to Grand Hyatt. To me it seemed that they never stopped working - they just stopped all the work, which would cause noise for the night time.

So, China and at least Shanghai is changing very rapidly and it is so amazing that you just have to believe Jian Shuo or then go there and look for it yourself. It is worth the trip. Just go there and be amazed how something is changing so unbeliably fast.

I wish I would be there ... I miss Shanghai, I don't know why exactly.

8 The Great Well in Jinmao Tower

Shanghai World Financial Tower - Is that what they are building near Jinmao Tower?

I was watching how they kept building it almost all night. I did sleep during the night so I am not sure if they ever stopped but to me it seemed that there was always something happening in that construction site.

7 The Great Well in Jinmao Tower

In my opinion the building is very modern and has fantastic details everywhere. Inside and outside. I was amazed how much little details here and there I was able to find. And they didn't just add some Chinese styling just for the purpose but they actually were able to add details, which are contributing to the bigger picture.

I loved the Chinese characters above the bed in the room, I do not read Chinese at all but I was told that they were just Chinese characters without any kind of message. They looked beautiful, like carved into the wall. And the bathroom with lots of stone and glass. Wow.

Every texture in the building seems to be well thought. The details together form a bigger picture, which is quite harmonic and peaceful. I found myself enjoying the modern looking building, which at the same time wasn't restless like some of the modern buildings often are. The whole building seems to be peaceful.

When I left the building for the first time in September, I knew that I have to return to experience it more. And I returned and stayed at the hotel in November. Even enjoyed the cloudy moment when you weren't able to see anything but clouds from the hotel room.

This building has some magic in it and it needs to be experienced before you can understand it. I hope that the people visiting the building will experiencing that magic.

6 The Great Well in Jinmao Tower

According to emporis.com there was also some other architects involved:

"Bregman + Hamann Architects was involved in the design of the Grand Hyatt's food court/theatre area."

mcgjcn: I am surprised if I am the first Finn here :) I hope you have had good experiences about Finnish superiors over the few years. We are sometimes a little bit quiet people but not always. And not all of us.

5 The Great Well in Jinmao Tower

The photos are indeed very good, I wish I could take such photos. My photos from Jin Mao Tower do not look anything like these.

The amount of WOWs you here there is amazing. Somehow it feels that just the view makes people very happy, there is something special in that building. Although, sometimes when you are trying to get to your room, you just have to get through all the tourists trying to figure how to get from the lobby to the best place to enjoy the view :) The two elevators needed to be taken before getting to the top of the hotel is one of the reasons why there is constant flow of tourists in the hotel lobby.

But definitely my favourite hotel now in Shanghai. We had such a nice time there last time. I wish I could be there right now ...

mcgjcn: Yes, I am a Finn. You seem to recognise the names and their origins very well :)

4 The Great Well in Jinmao Tower

The view is indeed breath-taking and makes you feel dizzy. At least it did it for me. Stayed in the hotel last time and I couldn't stop admiring the view.

Definitely worth the visit. Remember to visit the Cloud 9 restaurant also on top of the hotel.

2 Where are You?

Hey,

I am from Finland. A small, population a little bit above 5 million people, country in the Northern Europe. The neighbours in the map are Sweden, Russia, Norway and Estonia (Estonia doesn't share any land with us in the borders).

Finland is part of the European Union and nowadays has Euro as the currency, we used to have our own currency, markka. Finland has been ruled by Sweden and Russia in the history but we have been independent since 1917.

They say that Finnish people are shy and quiet but if you get to know us then you will make a friend for a lifetime. I don't know about that, I think the younger people are not so shy any longer but we still tend to appreciate friendship very much.

Finland is known to be a country of thousands lakes, it is actually true. According to some general definition for size of a lake, we actually have thousands of lakes, which are bigger than the definition. As we are small country by population, then there is still lots of land untouched and nature is one of the beautiful reasons for living or visiting here.

Winter time is a little bit depressing as sun will set very early and rise quite late. You get used to live in the darkness but it gets easier when it snows and everything turns white. During the summer time, people get really happy as sun practically doesn't set so well. It is so nice to walk out from the nightclub at 4am and see that there is still lots of light available and temperature is such that you don't feel chilly at all.

1 Must See - Coffee Facing the Bund

I think I was right there in that Starbuck last time and looking for the Bund. Very nice view and I certainly share your recommendation about it. Last time it was raining all day long but it was still worth it. I hope I will be there again soon.
