66 Jian Shuo Wang Becomes Wang Jian Shuo

Keep your name as it is Jian Shou. As you say it is you; it is central to your identity.

It may take a short moment for people to ask, if they need to, to clarify your family name and your given name. We English speakers - I am from UK -need to learn that people in different places have different name structures, and recognise it is a central part of honour of another culture to learn how that culture's name is made up, and learn how to pronounce it. As you say, Bill Gate's name is not changed in China, and in all my trips to China no one has ever asked me to change mine.

62 Seek for Some Guidance

Hello Wang
(Sorry for my english) I know your feeling very well. It's some kind of feeling "remote controlled". What I suggest in such moments....sit in a park (you have a lot of them in the great city of Shanghai) and do NOTHING! I mean really NOTHING. No reading, no eating, no blogging, no anything. Even try not to think. Just look around for about 30 minutes, 1 hour or whatever time you want. If you start to get bored, an I hope you will, you are on the good way, then you are on the way to relax. That's it! It's easy, not? Just trying to get bored. You dont think how relaxing this is and you will see how important it is to have TIME. After this you can come back and keep us informed about Shanghai with your blog. I whish you good luck.

60 GPRS Package from China Mobile

Jianshuo -

I really like your blog and these entries in particular. I had a question, though, regarding choice of service for a trip to China this summer. I am travelling to Beijing, Xian, Chengdu, Kunming, Guilin, and Harbin and was wondering what the best option for mobile service would be. Is there a service type (China Mobile vs. Unicom or specific services such as Shenzhouxing, etc...) that would be best for travelling to all of these cities? I have travelled a number of times to Beijing and have used the Shenzhouxing card with great success, but this is my first time travelling to more inland cities. I also will probably subscribe to a data plan. Thank you very much for your (or anyone else's) help with this.

58 Grace Wang Called a Traitor

It does not matter what she said, death threats and harassment of her and her parents is wrong. This will reflect terribly on China and the Chinese. It will remind the West of the stifling of thought that has so often been seen in Communist nations and will allow the West to claim that nothing has changed in China since Mao Zedong's period of leadership. This is unfair to China since lunatic none sense like this happens in America and Europe, for China to gain the respect as their equal, China has to be better then them. Honestly, why wouldn't you want to be better.

56 Brief Chat with Andrew

Jianshou, As a English person I want to thank you for the wise words in your post today. I have been reading what I could over this past two weeks as you have tried to comment on Tibet and how our protests are being seen in China. I have been travelling and too busy to comment but want to say how right you are.

Todays post got right to the heart of our arrogance in Britain, America, etc. We are always asking what we can do to help you. But we are not listening. And we want to help in our way. And we want to force that help on you and others. Thanks for challenging that, for naming it as invasion and pointing to how it can all go so badly wrong. Thanks for calling to talk together.

Jianshou, Thanks for your wise words. This past two weeks I have often wished I had time to add a comment to what you have written. But your words today speak to the heart of this stuation. You got right to core of the issue when you addressed the desire of so many of us in the west to "do something" to help China. You were brave to challenge us that its always what we want to do. An even braver to say that we then want to impose that change and to name that invasion. Thank you. I have posted some thoughts on your words on my ReconciliationTalk blog. I hope you can read them.

48 Guide for Bike Riders in Shanghai

I understand that many main roads in Shanghai don't allow bicycles. I just bought one, and want to use it to ride around the city, but I would like to know which major roads (besides the obvious ones, like Nanjing Lu, Beijing Lu, Yan'an Lu, Huaihai Lu) do NOT allow bicycles. That way, I'm not expecting to be able to ride on a road only to find it closed to bicycles.

A simple list of NO BICYCLE roads will be sufficient.

Thanks so much!

47 Can you Understand Dish Names in China?

This is a very helpful, Jianshou. It took me years to realise fully that the names of dishes in many restaurants were poetic descriptive of an idea, and only sometimes of the ingredients. Add to that the bad translations (I have never myself been offered "fuck the bullfrog") and the menu can be almost as hard to use as one in chinese characters alone.

How to handle a Chinese menu or restaurant with no English menu? By far the best, take a Chinese friend along. Other options: (1) Look for restaurant with picture menus; (2) use your pocket-sized language book menu list or carry your own printed list of dishes you like (most restaurants will then give you their own version of the dish whether or not its on their menu; I used to worry that "they didn't do that dish", but it has never worried them, and on one occasion had a 15 minute "discussion" with me pointing at my list and them pointing at their menu); (3) walk around the restaurant and point at dishes you like the look of; (4) point at random in the menu; (5) in cheaper places go to the kitchen and point at the meat and veg behind the counter; (6) sit down, call a Chinese friend on your mobile, tell them what you want and get them to tell the waiter. All are a challenge to the the timid, the introvert, the control-freak or fussy , but I have never eaten a bad meal in 20 business trips.

Shangahaiist listed this site the other day: http://www.howtoorderchinesefood.com It is great, and will be even more helpful when they have printable pdf's of different menus. But even now you could choose your selection of dishes at home, cut and paste the characters and print up the list!

45 Using Contact Lenses

i got my contacts 4 days ago. it's been really difficult putting them in and getting them out. sometimes i feel like i just got lucky all those times. last night i tried 3 different times to put them in, each failing miserably and ending in a dramatic tantrumatic fit.

I'm having such a bad experience. They're just so difficult to get out and even more difficult to get in. Reading these responses helps a lot and it makes me feel like I'm not the only one.

So far I'm still debating whether or not to continue. There seems to be too many problems for what it's worth. Did I mix up the left eye contact with the right. Is the contact inverted or not? How can you tell? Why is it so hard to find them after i drop them? I just seem so frustrated because of these little tiny slimy things.

43 Visited Bund Again Today

Hi Jianshou, You are right. When you live near a place it becomes familiar and even the most magical places can easily get forgotten. That's certainly true for me in London. I have to say though that I cannot imagine the Bund losing its power to amaze me! Even now after some 20 business trips to China, most of them arriving or departing from Shanghai, I cannot imagine an overnight in China without a walk along the Bund at nightime. It has to be one of the most magical places in the world!

And that is despite its past association with greed and exploitation. The buildings of the Bund seem to have been designed by the mainly Western architects to declare aloud the greatness of the Western powers. They were certainly well built. And yet now you Chinese have done an even better job over in Pudong. So the IFC is well above the Jin Mao tower now!! Wow! Last time i was there it was moving close. I cannot wait to see it - and the lighting design they choose for it.

The Bund is definitely the name given worldwide to the riverside of Puxi. Its origin is not an English word, however, but from a Hindi / Urdu word 'band', which we British brought with us from India in the early days of the International Settlement of Shanghai. It means "an artifical embankment or quay built in a muddy place", and in fact there were bunds on the International Concessions all the way up the Yangtze. There are remains of them in Nanjing (there are even some of the old English street lamps along the embankment), and in Wuhan (on the Hankou waterside) as well as other places. A lot of Hindi words have come into English from our colonial presence in India - words like jungle, bungalow, pyjama, loot -- and even Mandarin, the word we used for Chinese government officials and the "official Chinese" they spoke.

We Brits did a lot of mixing up, and have a lot to answer for, as well as leaving some good things in place.

38 2006 Asian Gaelic Games in Shanghai

Gaelic Football is like most original games of football were in the early 19th century. In fact most football played in England was similar until the Cambridge university football team that preferred minimal hand contact turned up on mass to a Football Association of England meeting and voted to change the rules to the modern form of Football played by FIFA.

The Irish were never going to follow the English. Gaelic Football (Gaelic is the original language of Ireland) is actually a better game than the football that is played all over the world. You can catch the ball and run up to 5 steps with it but then must tap or punch it to a team mate with your hand or kick it to a team mate. If you kick a goal into the net it is worth 3 points, if you kick it over a rugby or american football like cross bar above the goal it is worth 1 point. The only off-side area is the goal keeper's small box.

It is a faster more exciting form of football and you don't have to head the ball - which is a bit of a weird thing if you think about it. In fact from a pure anatomic point of view using hands as well as feet makes sense for the human species and Gaelic football is a lot less weird than so called "normal" football/soccer.

The game is now played more and more outside Ireland. If you are in Asia contact www.asiangaelicgames.com In Australia or NZ www.gaelicfootball.com.au

There is also a similar but rougher game played between Ireland and Australia that is a mix of Irish Gaelic Football and Australian Rules Football (see www.afl.com.au for Australian Rules Football). This Sunday a crowd of 83,000 will pack Dublin's Croke Park Stadium to watch Australia play Ireland in this form of Gaelic/Aussie Football called "International Rules Football" - wikipedia search that for more details.

37 Say Goodbye to Paper Ticket

E tickets and payment - cash on delivery or credit cards?

JianShou, your two recent posts on E tickets and Cash payment are interesting. Until now when I have been in China on business I have always booked my tickets at hotel business centres - in my experience good 3 star hotels seem to have one. OK, they charge a booking fee but I do not speak Chinese enough to survive anywhere else. Its always been easy - about 15 minutes, payment in cash and its done.

I am currently in China and ordered tickets the other day. They went to the computer and showed me available flights on www.elong.com . I was charged 860 RMB plus booking fee of 15oRMB. When the "ticket" arrived it was not a ticket -- like you said -- but a receipt for my money, with a E ticket number printed.

OK, I thought, I can do that with elong - and save 150RMB!!! I already use elong for hotel booking and its been great!! So last night for my next flight I tried to book tickets nanjing to Beijing. I got to the point on the web where I was expecting to give credit card details, and instead I was asked for my address so they could deliver the ticket and collect cash!! However I went ahead. This morning there were two emails from elong, and one from my son in England saying they had called and wanted to confirm details. I called, spent 30 minutes on the phone, going over the details I had already given and was then asked for details of how they could deliver the "ticket" and collect cash, and when I would be available. I was not able to wait around so they said they would take my credit card details. They then again wanted to know where they could deliver the ticket. Ten minutes later I got an email in Chinese which I assume had the details of the ticket. Then I had an email asking me to call to confirm credit card details and also fax images of my credit card. To send a fax I would have to go to the business centre. And I would sttill have to wait around for the deliver of the E ticket!! So at that point I replied asking them to cancel the ticket.

I went to the business centre and got the ticket in 15 minutes!! It will be delivered to my room tonight.

All of that is to say, visitors to China would be well advised for now not to waste time with E Tickets!! I want to say I do not intend to criticise the system here. Chinese financial transactions are improving all the time, but security is obviously not yet good enough to enable reliable and secure credit card transactions carried out entirely on line and paperless E tickets delivered by email. I am sure China will get there. Its much easier now in 1997 when I used to have to make my way across town to buy a ticket!! But I just need to continue for now to use the business centre!

But visitors from the UK, America, etc. who expect an e ticket to be in their email inbasket after 10 minutes on line may have to wait a while yet.

JianShou, Thanks for your willingness to allow people to connect here in the context of events of your life and information about China, Shanghai ... and the world. People, lets make life easier for JianShou and cut down on the flaming.

33 Maglev Accident in Germany

Yes, it's a tragedy. Technically, two Maglev trains can't collide because the magnetic field moving the train will propell two trains on the same track in the same direction. However, the maintenance vehicle involved in the accident was not a Maglev vehicle but a 'regular' vehicle not sensitive to any magnetic field. Apparently, somebody left the maintenance vehicle on the track and nobody noticed this. The the Maglev train crashed into it. So it's not a problem of the technology but of human error. I am very sorry for the people who got killed in the accident.

30 How Many Hotels in Shanghai?

Jianshou, I want to commend the East Asia Hotel on Nanjing Lu. As a regular overseas visitor to Shanghai for work, but always on a low budget, I have experienced a lot of the hotels with rooms with price around 250-400RMB. For that price you don't expect much, so character or location make a place worthwhile. For character and history, I always choose the Pujiang! For location you cannot beat the East Asia Hotel on Nanjing Lu. A fifteen minute walk to the Bund and five minutes to People's Square for the nightime views; shops and eating places on your doorstep; and even a possible glimpse of Wang Jiangshou on his way to or from work make it a great place for an overnight stop in Shanghai en route to the airport. For 280RMB (elong and ctrip prices for a standard room) you may get a small box with no view (some "windows" look out into a small lightwell that is currently full of scaffold!), but who needs a view when you are out of the room excpet to sleep. The other major warning is that some of the undeveloped rooms are down a passage that takes you past the restaurant fish tanks, so visitors who do not enjoy an early morning face to face encounter with a lobster who survived being cooked the night before, or the smell of fish, may want to ask for another area. For me the only hassle is that taxi drivers never know where it is, and when they do drop you you have to drag your bags 50 meters. But the inconvenience is nothing compared with being in the throbbing heart of Shanghai and modern China. I will be there next Thursday evening!

27 Using Contact Lenses

A month ago, I posted over here. I then said I really had trouble putting my lenses out. Well I still have :). Yesterday I managed to put it out all by myself for the first time!! All the other times I kept going to a friend of mine who also wear lenses and then he just had put them out of my eyes.
I have to admit that I don't try everyday. I just don't have the time and motivation to try them everyday. Only 2 à 3 times a week a wear my lenses. But it is true that after a while your eyelids 'get used' of putting your fingers so close to your eyes. I still have a great 'shut-your-eyelids-reflect' but very slowly it is getting better.
The ones who also can't take their lenses out of their eyes all by themselve, I can just advice to try poking with a clean finger in your eyes. You don't have to wear your lenses, cause I really can imagine it is frustrating if you can't get them out. Just try everyday touching your eyes for and after a while it will get better.

My body was shaking and at the same time I kept saying to myself not to shut my eyelids. Luckely that worked and the optician had put them in again. He then asked me to put them out again but I just couldn't do it. So I said that I would try it at home. The problem is that the optician is closed now and I still have the f*****g contacts in my eyes. But I can't take these damn things out. So I still have an half day of trying to get these horrible contacts out of my eyes. Hopely I'll manage to do it

17 Some Recent Magazines about Me

This guy is way too much into himself. His blog is basically a propaganda machine, always good things about Shanghai and himself. Where is the information about the big anti japanese protests in Shanghai? Avian flu? Skype blocking by the government?
Why is it wrong to discuss all this here? If all you are going to talk about are good things, I might as well read some government propaganda.

btw i was a big fan of this blog before the total censorship of the anti japanese protest (although there was one "rosy" report of the protest after some complaints by readers here). Sure, I dont have to read this if I dont like it and I intend not to. I suggest, go to Shanghaiist website if you need good solid and no holds bar information about Shanghai.

16 KFC Dropped Potato Wedge in Shanghai

Of course people get fat and overweight and obese for some, but that's because of their daily routine. Look at the Americans, it generally consist of, wake up, get ready, drive to work, sit at work, walk the whole 5 minutes to the nearest McDs, sit and eat, walk another 5 minutes back to work, sit til the end of work day, drive home, sit and have dinner, sit and watch tv, sleep, wake up, sit on toilet... Unless, they make an effort to get some exercise in their routine, and they have to get the motivation to do so, it's never going to change and they just sue fast food coz they can because we have come to believe that fast food is bad for you.

You look at China or Asian countries, consumption of fast food is just as high as in US. But you don't see as many obese people here and there. But you will see your general overweight around all the time. I truly believe people here are forced to walk to most of their destinations.

BTW, didn't scientist prove that obesity is linked to genetics?

Bring my potato wedges back!!! I want to eat deep friend starch wrapped in an artificial potato skin with artificial flavourings...^^

15 PVG: From Pudong Airport to Nanjing

Hi Jian Shuo.

I am a little bit confused: Does it take 1 hour or 1.5 hours to go to Hong Qiao Airport from Pudong Airport?

Is Route No. 1 the only bus from Pudong to Hong Qiao?

Does it run every half an hour? Does it operate like this: leaving at 7.00 p.m., 7.30 p.m., 8.00 p.m., etc.

If my plane arrives at Pudong at 6.00 p.m. and the plane leaves Hong Qiao at 9.00 p.m., do you think there is sufficient time? If it takes 1.5 hours, then I will be able to catch the plane leaving at 9.00 p.m. Right or wrong?

What is the taxi fare from Pudong to Hong Qiao and how long does it take?

10 I Didn't Escape from Puxi

I had a wonderful visit to Shanghai and nearby cities Nanjing, Suzhou and Hangzhou last week, only to be marred by the bad experience of having my digital camera picked from my pocket at the bund the last evening. So I have no Hangzhou and Zhouzhuang pictures. I mentioned the incidence to a Shanghai friend. His answer was that there are a lot of bad elements among non-native Shanghai residents. Seems like only non-Shanghai people commit crimes. Shanghai people are above doing such things.

9 MSN Messenger Virus Jitux.A

Mel, in most cases, viruses and worms come in multi-packs. You probably don't only have one worm or virus but severals.

1. Calm down and reboot your brain ;-) Fear and anger are bad advisors.
2. Unplug the modem of the infected PC. Shut down the PC.
3. Using another, not infected PC, download new anti-virus software including the *very latest* virus definition files. Burn it onto a CDROM.
4. Boot the infected PC in "safe mode", install the anti-virus software. Scan and clean your PC (make a backup of all data before doing this).
5. If this doesn't work, you usually need to reinstall all the software on your PC
6. Take care that this doesn't happen in the future anymore. Install a anti-virus scanner and guard (real-time monitoring). Update them every couple of days. And most importantly: Don't click on a thing just because it says "click me".
7. Use safer software. For example, don't use Microsoft software but Apple or Linux software.

Good luck!

8 Shanghai Hotel Guide

Hi,

are there any Chinese/Shanghai recruiting agencies (headhunters) specializing in the placement of foreign University graduates (from Europe, USA etc.)?
Is it difficult to get a working permit for an IT job in Shanghai?

How much (USD) do the following things cost per month:

* Have a flat (>45 m^2) (suitable for western people) not too far off central Shanghai?
* Eat 2 x per day in food-stalls and restaurants (breakfast at home)?
* Attend classes to learn basic Chinese?
* Average cost of spending leisure time (going to cinema, dancing, concerts and so on)?

What is the average salary for a Java programmer (European University IT graduate) in Shanghai?
As a foreigner, is it better to work and live in Beijing instead of Shanghai?
Is Beijing less expensive than Shanghai?

Thank you.

7 Calling Card in Shanghai

Thank you, Luuvi. Skype is only useful if you could get to a computer. I need information for using my own mobile phone that is tri-band, GSM compatible with the system in China. I need to find a sim card to put it in the phone. Hope they have it at the airport.

6 Calling Card in Shanghai

Hi! I am planning to visit Shanghai in mid March for a week, and thinking of taking my tri-band GSM mobile phone with me. Can you tell me anything about sim card? Typical cost and number of minutes available? Can I use it to make international calls to the US, Japan, etc. in addition to local calls in the greater Shanghai area? I am thinking of visiting Nanjing, Suzhou, Hangzhou, etc., you know, the routine tourist thing. Is it available anywhere including the Pudong airport? Online?

Thank you very much!

Microsoft Announces Windows Rights Management Services For Windows Server 2003

Rights Management Solution Will Give Organizations and Employees New Ways To Protect Information

REDMOND, Wash., Feb. 21, 2003 -- Microsoft Corp. today announced plans for Windows® Rights Management Services (RMS), a new technology for Windows Server 2003 that will give organizations advanced ways to help secure sensitive internal business information including financial reports and confidential planning documents. Windows Rights Management Services will work with applications to provide a platform-based approach to providing persistent policy rights for Web content and sensitive corporate documents of all types. Beta code for Windows Rights Management Services will be broadly available in the second quarter of 2003.

"Customers have told us they need better solutions to help safeguard their critical business information," said Mike Nash, corporate vice president of the Security Business Unit at Microsoft. "What's really compelling about Rights Management technology is that it enables businesses to protect the information they most worry might leak — either deliberately or inadvertently — by putting persistent protections in the documents themselves."

Using Windows Rights Management Services, applications such as information portals, word processors or e-mail clients can be built so that users will be able to easily designate both who can have access to specific content and what kinds of access rights they can have. Rights and policy are managed by the server, while clients running RMS-enabled applications allow users to apply rights with a click of a button. For example, Windows Rights Management Services can be used to control forwarding, copying and printing, as well as establishing time-based expiration rules. In addition, enterprises can enforce policy broadly and reliably by centrally delivering templates that automate the process — for example, making the policy around what constitutes "company confidential" uniform and easy to manage.

Because Windows Rights Management Services technology is an ASP.NET Web service built on the Microsoft® .NET Framework, it can more easily interoperate with business processes via Web services. RMS technology uses XrML (Extensible Rights Markup Language), an emerging standard for the expression of rights on digital content. Microsoft will release two software development kits in the second quarter of 2003 to enable developers to begin to build rights management capabilities into a broad range of intra-enterprise solutions and applications for Windows clients.

2 Wedding Anniversary

Good Web site.

Your age let me remember when I was 25 years old
in IBM china since 1990 to 1994.
The foreigen IT companies in china are still booming and need to
hire the guys like you and your wife. They need the fresh blood
to support their sales in china.
Anyway, To continue my story, I come to States after 1998 and
got green card after 3 years staying there.
Right now, I want to tell you that living USA and visiting USA
is totally two different things. The CEO of companies
in USA are all greedy. You guys just enjoy the good time
of chinese booming time and shanhai's sunshine.
But remember not anywhere is as good as SH right now.
