19 My Experience of TOEIC Exam

A totally cool TOEIC preparation website for all those wishing to prepare for the TOEIC or improve their score. www.toeic-vorbereitung.com/ has thousands of TOEIC questions covering all parts of the original and redesigned TOEIC. There is a unique tool called the performance monitor that shows you your current TOEIC level and also your TOEIC level for each part and question type in the TOEIC. After you answer the questions, you can review the ones you had wrong and learn your mistakes. The site is also full of useful tips and advice for doing the TOEIC and even has explanations showing how you are being tested. It also has an English learning area with exercises and games for learning English grammar, vocabulary and idioms. All this is supported by your own personal trainer that you can email with questions and advice, or if you are shy, forget about, he won't bother you. Best now for you to go and look at it.

18 Starbucks Finally Closed in the Forbidden City

I visited the Starbucks in The Forbidden City during April this year. At the time I was unaware of this issue, although I thought it curious when someone tried to take a photo inside, and the staff stopped them.
On the whole I tend to agree that a Starbucks, or any retail outlet is inappropriate within the Forbidden City. The store was located in a small corner of the 'official' gift shop. I don't really feel that even this gift shop should be there.
Regarding the 'Chinese' signs debate, there are a huge number of english branded stores in Shanghai. This is a symptom of China's economical development. However, as a (UK)westerner I feel that it is important not to dilute China's identity, and the 'english' branding should be secondary (as a concession to the desire for Chinese to learn English).
My wife is Shanghainese, (and for the record she moved to the UK in 1999 and we met in 2003. see 'Shanghainese girls marrying foreigners'03/20/2007) and she also takes the view that the national identity of China is being eroded, particularly in Shanghai, but throughout the country as a whole.

17 Discrimination Against Foreigners in Shanghai?

i just wanted to add-i didnt get to read the whole blog- that any allegations of discrimination among darker skinned individuals in china and asian countries in general are absolutley true.
as a mixed race asian i know this first hand- there really is no other reason to ask for a picture.
moreover you can only truly experience from the vantagepoint of the colored individual; the world a white person sees is completely different. the world would do their collective selves a favor if they would simply acknowledge this rather than obscure the issue with pointless research.

the only thing that i could never figure out is with the japanese in particular. the bombing of the japanese by americans - the only time in history that atomic weapons have been used to eradicate a people off the face of the earth- only seemed to make them think white is right even more.

15 Suggest a Topic

Wang JianShuo, I am curious as to why Chinese feel they have to use a Western name, even in China. My wife is Wang ChunMei, but is known as Cindy here in the UK. Her reason is that Westerners find Chinese names difficult. This may be so, but why the need for a Western name in China? I hope you find this a worthy topic. I look forward to hearing your view.

14 In Beijing

Hi Wang JianShou,
who did you fly with, China Eastern? When I fly to Shanghai, I use KLM from Manchester (UK) via Amsterdam. The e-ticket, and on line check in work very well. Interested to hear your experience.

13 Back to Blog of My Own

Wang JianShou,

I have followed your blog for the last 1.5 years. Being married to a Shanghainese, your blog sparks many debates between us.

I was surprised and dismayed to read some of the recent 'attacks' against China and indeed you. People are entitled to their opinion, but hey, if they don't like what they read on your blog, then why do they bother to read it?? Yes, China has many faults, as does the UK where I live, but that is how it is; and launching vitriolic attacks against individuals is not the way to change things.

Keep up the good work!!

11 Using Contact Lenses

Hello all. I got soft contacts 3 days ago now and was having the same kind of troubles a lot of you have been talking about. I somehow got one of them in at the doc's office (the first was put in for me by the doc) then got the same one out and somehow got it back in after about 30 minutes of trying. Then when I got home I had a lot of trouble getting them out, but, after about 20 minutes, finally retrieved them from my eye. The next morning I spent about 45 minutes trying to put them in and just gave up. I was so upset with myself for not being able to do such a stupid thing and was even more angry that I was going to have to get glasses. Then one of my buddies called me and I told him about how much trouble I was having and he said that he used to wear contacts and that the trick putting them in is to hold your eye open, line up the contact with your eye, and then look to one side of your eye so you can't see the contact coming into your eye. I got both in within about 2 minutes once I tried it. It was so easy. I was so relieved. So all of you who are having troubles, hopefully this works for you. Here's my tips in a nutshell:

Putting contacts in: Hold eye open, get the contact lined up with your eye to where it is almost touching your eye and then look to one side so you can't see the contact coming into your eye and then just put the contact on the white part of your eye. Sometimes the contact isn't centered over the eye right away, but just close your eyes and move your eyeball around and it should center itself. If it doesn't, open your eye and move the contact with you finger a little bit.

Taking contacts out: Hold eye open, touch your thumb to one side of your eye and your index finger to the opposite side and lightly pinch them together and pull out. I think a lot of people are scared of being to hard, but I had to get pissed and just jam my finger in there the first couple of times. It gets easier after your first few tries and you learn how much pressure it takes.

Hope this helps you!

9 The City and Its Moral Boundary

I play a game with the card spammers.

I take all the cards offered and screw them all up and throw them back over my shoulder for them to see that they are wasting their time with me.

After two days they learn to withhold any accidently offered cards when the look up at me and remember what will happento their card rubbish.

8 The City and Its Moral Boundary

On Pickpockets

I stopped a guy yesterday on HuaiHai from stealing a couple's wallet by pointing at him and yelling ... loudly. I was over twenty feet away from him. He was sneaking up behind a couple and walking behind them.

My yelling seemed to stop him from stealing the wallet, but had no other impact -- i.e. the couple walked on and the guy looked slightly put-off, but nothing more. What I found amazing was that it wasn't *hard* to see what he was up to and I was blazing by listening to music. Others must see it happening.

Earlier in the week, some guy tried to make off with my bag, while I was eating at a fast food joint. The bag was hanging over the back of my chair. I turned, for some reason, and saw him sneaking off about fifteen feet away. I got up, yelled at him and sprinted after him. He dropped the bag and peeled off out the exit. No one said "boo" about it while it was happening (to be expected) and then gathered around to discuss, while I tried to continue eating.

Both cases riled me in the moment and in both cases I wonder whether I should have tackled the guys. I think it would have been more trouble than it would have been worth. It's just shitty that no one does anything.

I just wondered whether by blocking all other users, it would stop someone that you know but who isnt on your contact list from asking you whether they can be added to your contacts list.

1 MovableType Successfully Installed on Windows XP

Holy crap is installing this thing hard.

I did the instructions on this website (by the way - great website).

I had to install Service Pack 3 on my Windows 2000 box in order for the latest MSI from Active State to work.

I loaded all three Perl Modulues successfully. I edited the mt.cfg file per this page and I referenced a directory that was not there - c:\inetpub\wwwroot\mt\db which I created and then I got the login page but there was nothing in the DB directory.

That's where I had to run from a command prompt - Perl mt-load.cgi and voila - my db directory how had 36 files which look like they belong there.

Now I can run http://192.168.199.129/mt/mt.cgi and I get a login screen but I don't know the username or password - I have been looking at manuals and have not found it yet - what is the default password for MT?

Thanks.
