Where to Study Chinese, Beijing or Shanghai? I typed Study Chinese in Shanghai in google and got here, it's a bit crazy, this topic has been discussed for 4 years! In my perspective, choosing a right university is extremely important. Fudan really sucks, I took 2 semesters and finally quit. The classes are too big, about 20 students in one class, some teachers are really bad, I think they are graduate students from Fudan doing part-time. Jiaotong University is even worse I heard, if you are unlucky, you will meet one new teacher shivering in front of students because he has never given any lessons yet. May be East China Normal University could be a better choice, but I haven't been there... Eventually I quit university and continued learning with private school. I tried Mandarin House once, it sucks, changing teachers all the time. I don't think they are professional for I asked them a lot of questions and they had some problems with explaining. I finished my 45 hour package and decided to push my luck for the last time. I went to Mandarinrocks, another school in Plaza 66 recommended by my classmate in Fudan, it's pretty good actually, my teacher is very nice and helpful. Learing Chinese is always painful with the wrong school and wrong teacher, I just wish all the Chinese programs are better orgainized so that we won't fall for those cheaters....good luck, everybody |

Still Working with IPowerWeb I hate ipowerweb. I moved to media temple after my database connection kept on getting dropped. They said that the problem must be with another user on the grid (shared hosting sucks period) and that someone had managed to configure the mysql to allow more connections to their site, while sucking connections from mine. That is like saying "Please Please eat up my bullshit" - I wouldn't buy it for a second. Unless that user had full shell access to the mysql, which you don't get on shared servers, there is no way to configure what they were talking about. I have been with them for 3 years, have around 30 clients on them, and now they are beginning to fall apart from the inside out. They are like a worn out car, it needs to be replaced, and that means all the servers, generators, and the team of IT workers, who are out on cigarette breaks while my site goes down. After one huge news release about a clients site back around a year ago, the server happened to go down for the whole weekend after the article came out. They said "We are doing just the best we can, but unfortunately it will take around 48 hours to get the site back online" - I.E. someone couldn't find the god damn reboot button on the server to get it back online. I have gotten so much shit from them in the past, lies, etc, and the vDeck blows. It takes older sites, i.e. 3 years plus around 15 attempts to access the vDeck, if your a web developer reading this, think about crunch time when you are having to access your database through the vDeck, I had to just end up making a shortcut to PhpMyAdmin and literally by-pass the vDeck all together. I am now on a dedicated server over at MediaTemple and so far so good. |

Using Contact Lenses This site has been really encouraging - I went through the same thing as y'all did today. Have worn glasses for years and finally decided to go for it with the contacts. I went to the dr's office this morning and he put them in and I took them out - an ordeal both times to say the least. Then it was my turn to put them in and I just could not do it. So after an hour he told me my eyes were really red and irritated so I would have to come back another day after practicing at home touching my eye. I think the technique of looking up and putting the contact lens on the bottom white part of the eye and then moving your eye down to actually look through the lens is going to be the best technique for me since I can touch the white of my eye down there without too much flinching. Wish me luck. |

Beijing 2008 Olympic Mascots they look pretty chinese to me. sure they are "cute" but I don't think japan is the only country allowed to produce "cute" things. I think bashing on them for their japanese influence is sort of like bashing on almost every modern american rock band because much of their sound came from the british invasion... or almost every hollywood action movie that uses elements of HK cinema. that's how pop culture works. (if you could call the olympics "pop" culture.... I don't see why not) when something is extremely successful everything that comes afterward ends up looking a little bit like it. -then the lines between what's "british" "american" "japanese" or "icelandic" get blurred. and that's supposed to be a good thing, right? really, I think they are tastefully done.... expecially when compared to the mascots of other recent olympic games. |

PVG: Buses to Hangzhou, Suzhou... Hi, Is this bus schedule current? I want to catch the bus to Suzhou, but won't be able to catch the 18:50 bus. Is there a 19:50 bus? What are my other choices? I will have some big pieces of luggage. Thx, Scott |

Shanghai Metro Map and Timetable Hello There, I'm arriving in Shanghai by train and need to get to PVG. What's the easiest way to get to the airport? I understand there's a bus (#5?), where would I catch it? How far would it be by taxi and what might be the cost? Thx, Scott |

Thanks for your Comments Hello Jian Shuo Wang, Want to thank you for an informative and very useful website. It must be some task to keep everything up-to-date and respond to comments. I'm currently teaching and living in Suzhou. I moved here three weeks ago from San Francisco and my wife will be joining me this Saturday. We want to take the bus you mention in your blog to Suzhou. It appears the last bus leaves PVG @ 18:50. My wife's plane is scheduled to land at 17:55. I believe the connection time may be inadequate. Are there any other alternatives? If we can take the bus, where would we buy the tickets and where would we board the bus? Any help in identifying the bus would be helpful too. Thanks for your help in advance. Again, I want to thank you for the terrific resource you are providing. Best regards, Scott |

Shanghai SARS: Situation Severe I still believe Shanghai is being protected by a media cloak on the real number SARS in Shanghai...China knows that Shanghai is the financial back bone for them. There is no logic behind low numbers here...larger city, more traveled, not any cleaner, still we see the bad habits of spitting, coughing, sneezing, peeing in the street...you name it....how can the numbers be so low? I hear the hospitals are packed out with pneumonia patients...but of course not SARS. Is Beijing shipping the sick to Beijing to protect Shanghai? I have so many more questions than answers... |

MovableType Successfully Installed on Windows XP I'm note sure if anyone has commented on this, but I ran into a problem where DBI::mysql wasn't installed in perl, so MT couldn't talk to mySQL. Info on how to get this fixed is at: http://www.mysql.com/doc/en/ActiveState_Perl.html Great resource! Thanks! |
