Chinese Government is Like a Company You forgot the most important, each department in chinese government fight to have more power (do not forget that power = money), and try to get less responsibilities (responsabilities = problems) It is a big mess, and they often do not inform each other of what is going one. Then there is also the army who do what they want (for example normal traffic police can not or do not dare stop the car with military plate) Plus they need to manage between the different faction within the party, some support Hu, some support the previous one, etc... Chinese government is much more messy that what your explanation of one big company tell us. |

Different Ways to Waste Energy What about the taxi drivers who love to put heater and at the same time open the window. What about the office/shop who so often put aircon very cold and open the window/door at the same time? What about... so many more stuffs... But more important what cause lot of waste of energy is a poorly isolated house, a house in suburb who force to drive lot of km a day by car (high consomation car in the USA... European car use around twice less petroleum each km) Of course plane travel pollute quite a lot. |

China-US Economy Discussion 1 - if the RMB increase it limit also the inflation on imported price (raw material, such as oil) 2 - if the RMB incease it mean that the product china export are more expensive, (china earn more each time china export one product) but not enough to be relocalized in western countries, and if we want to transfer these product to another developing country he needs an industrial base. Thus most of the production will stay in China for long. Thus china may win more as the RMB increase... it just need not too be too quick. 3 - if China sell to quickly is USD/american bound, this will cause the slump of USA and American economy... thus China foreign reserve will loose value, and china export will suffer a lot. Thus China has a lot to loose. 4 - buy buying for so long USD, China has support USA, and has support her own growth...thus it was not stupid without that China will not be so develloped. 5 - This kind of way of working (I buy your USD, You buy my product and invest in my country) is reaching a point in which it can not be sustain for long (as china economy is quite big now) thus China will need to focus more on internal consumption and less export to continue to grow. 6 - what block China internal consumption ? the excess of saving from familly (if my memory is right around 40%) why chinese people save so much ? because of an unsure future (need to pay the education fee of my son, need to have money when I will retired, need to have money in case I am ill, etc...) 7 - One way to decrease this fear is to increase the state social security system in china 8 - Hu Jintao government is increasing the state social security system. yeah you are right, it is maybe not only to be nice with people but also because China need it to continue to grow. |

Dos and Don'ts For Foriengers in China Hello Jian Shuo Wang! I am from French, living in China since years. For me, the goal of pedestrian light is to avoid accident, to increase security... Thus if there is no car, the security goal is achieve... thus why wait for nothing? I will be a little rude: I think there is three kind of people: the one who do not think do not look and just cross (the suicide type), the one who apply stricly the jaywalking rules (who think himself has civilized but do not think much, just obey), the smart one (me of course >_<) For me be civilized is not respect stricly pedestrian traffic rules, but a way of behaving with other people (beeing nice with people around you, even the people who low rank job), do not destroy your environment, and think to not disturb other people. So to make it short: "Beeing civilized is take into account that you are not alone, and that others deserve your respect" I think that many chinese are focus on "beeing Civilized, romantic, and open minded is good" but very few understand the meaning of these words and most of them just apply cliche they have been told or see in stupid TV serie. |

Dos and Don'ts For Foriengers in China Why so much focus on jaywalking? I am foreigner, I personally never look if the light is red or green for pedestrian (whatever I am in China or aboard), but I look carefully of the cars, if I can cross without danger and without forcing car to slow down, then I cross. What is the point to wait??? And whatever in China even if it is red for pedestrian the car can still turn right, so it is not safe for pedestrian. Furthermore, when I walk I do not pollute the air, I do not make noise, I am already nice enough to let the way to the cars who make noise, pollute, can hurt people. But the problem is that many many local people just cross on red light without looking to the cars... When I am in a taxi and it happen, I most of the time say to the taxi driver for fun: "he tried to suicide, please do not help him" |

One Ceremony, Many Perceiptions Ok for Chinese flag but: Why does the Chinese soldiers raised Olympic flag? why not athletes ? I do not remember seeing that elsewhere... but am I wrong? is it always like that? By the way: -- After the fake footprint see at the TV who where in fact computer generated http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/othersports/olympics/2534499/Beijing-Olympic-2008-opening-ceremony-giant-firework-footprints-faked.html -- The cute girl who "sang" as the Chinese flag entered the stadium was not the real one singing, what we hear was another girl voice (who had bad looking teeth so had been kick out of the stadium) http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/othersports/olympics/2545387/Beijing-Olympics-Faking-scandal-over-girl-who-sang-in-opening-ceremony.html I have still enjoyed a lot the show, but I start to wonder how many more cheating there have been to impress the world ? |

Beijing Olympic Games Opening Ceremony Hello! I really liked the opening ceremony, quite impressive. But while watching I had the feeling the footprint were like a computer animation... I was right: the footprint we saw at the TV was not real, it was computer generated: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/othersports/olympics/2534499/Beijing-Olympic-2008-opening-ceremony-giant-firework-footprints-faked.html They should have told us, or write it on the screen... I feel a bit cheated. But whatever happen only a few will know, billions will not know and have been astonish. Thus they will reach their goal in a not totally fair way. |

Swim in River in Shanghai Look ok, do not mean is clean, according to European standards I believe no one river is clean in less than 300km away of shanghai. Will be interesting to test the water quality (I do not mean take gov statistics which are most of the time not true.... same for the official "blue sky" in Beijing for which they show improvement as they cheated by changing the way to measure). And a advice, if you swim... better quickly after take a good shower. |

Data Center "Sealed" During Olympic Please keep us inform if during the Olympic games many BBS are close, and if you feel more (or less) censorship than usually. (by the way: no more Business visa are delivered in Olympic city including shanghai http://www.chinaherald.net/2008/07/olympic-cities-stop-issuing-business.html "Beijing welcome you", but you have to stay in your home country in front of the TV) |

Monday, Tuesday, ... Olympic "Beijing welcome you": that is what they say for Beijing olympics. But they are so crazy about "security" that they see everyone as a threat, thus they kick out many foreigners from China, prevent many more to come, kick out mingong and farmers from Beijing (Are they not real Chinese like every other Chinese? or are they second class Chinese that worst only to work as hell for us to build our building, provide us food, and work in factory to produce cheap goods. Bullshit!! they are egal to all other Chinese, and have the same right to go to Beijing try to enjoy the Olympics) Welcome???? Since I am in China I have seen many real welcoming Chinese people... But if the gov continue this way (restriction, control, etc...) it will really not give a good image of China, and the gov will be the only one to blame. |

Killed 6 Policemen and Became Hero I am against death penalty, but in china if this guy had killed the policemen who are above the law and the one who have put him in jail for nothing, I might have understand...but random killing (of maybe good policemen... it happen sometime) is something different, nothing heroic. To jqian: There is now more inequality in China than in 1949 when communist took power. The Legal system can NOT be "mature" in china has there is no separation of power between the gov, police, justice. and because the gov will never let the police/justice be independent otherwise they might loose power. Do not forget the Chinese constitution say: "China protect and respect human right" Just imagine what will happen if the justice can be independent and give right to people who ask human right. |

Register with PSB During Olympics? To jay: you are unlucky, I live in Shanghai for years, and I have been ask only once my passport on the street. To DB: Western countries are at least countries rules by law... China is rules by the will of people who have power. When you need police they are here to protect you and help you. I have been beaten by Chinese people in a club, I call myself the police to ask for protection and Justice. They came, bring me to police station, did not even check video camera, and keep me for hours in police station putting a lot of pressure on me, trying to force me to sign a paper in Chinese that I do not understand... and did not care about what I was saying... Yes it happen in Shanghai, two km away from people square. One of my friend told me, Police came and to receive every month a percentage of the Turn over from the company she work for, and they even took away lot of goods. I have learn my lesson, if I have problem, deal myself. Thanks you the Chinese police! By the way: Soliders in China are officially above the traffic law... http://olympics.scmp.com/Article.aspx?id=892 |
