Network Speed of my FTTB+LAN I had FTTP at my office in Shanghai, 10mb shared line which was with Netcom. It was the worst peice of crap I've ever had. A lesson learnt was forget Netcom FOREVER. What we figured out all speed issues we had, I mean dial-up speed like issues whenever trying to send and recieve data overseas, was due to the lack of overseas route connections Netcom has. After complaining several times they changed the routes which solved the problem but the following day they changed them back because some other client complained about slow speeds to overseas locations that mattered to them. Final result was Netcom just said if you don't like it cancel the contract. I did and I didn't pay our months fee which is was around 4000rmb. Switched over the China Telecom for a 2mb dedicated EDSL line, which has improved considerably. EDLS is faster than ADLS and supposedly FTTB, it's a new service China Telecom offers businesses. China Telecom has much better overseas route options. Initially we had slow speeds, complained and they changed them around a bit. I am uploading and downloading to the UK for example between 500kbps and 1mbps on good days. Data transfer from SH to Japan though sucks really bad. We are working with China Telecom to work out a better route. CT is open to do this which is cool. With a bit of cooperation with your ISP you can improve things HOWEVER it will never happen with Netcom, NEVER. China ISP's are essentially great LAN services, ISP's they have a long way to go before they can be considered such. Corporate broadband will forever be a struggle, at least until the market opens up and foreign co's can come and spice it up a bit. Then we'll start to see some amazing infrastructure unfold. CT and Netcom have a monopoly, they don't need to reinvest profits into improving infrastructure and service because most customers just deal with local net requirements so they just sit back and let the $ roll in. It will come back and bit them in the ass. |
