Can you Understand Dish Names in China? It is really interesting to read your blog about the translation of Chinese dishes. Actually what you written in this article is true.That's why the Chinese govenment set a formal menu for some regular Chinese dishes last year. When this official Chinese dishes was published, it had caused a lot of contradictory comments about it. On the one hand, some do agree that these Chinese dishes should be given such official names to avoid misunderstanding due to irregular translation. While on the other hand, some people do against this menu, they believe that this would limit our mind for creation and innovation, as most restaurants probably would apply innovative dish names for attracting more customers..... |

Where to Study Chinese, Beijing or Shanghai? Does anybody still use this blog? I;m going to travel abroad for about a month and a half during summer 2008. (olympics!) I too am debating whether the majority of my stay and chinese learning should take place in Beijing (Beijing Normal Univ) or Shanghai (East China Normal University). I'm thinking of staying at shanghai since the olympics is going to attract many many many tourists and just visitng beijing before and after my class which would correspond to before and during the olympics. Is there anything else I should take into consideration besides the culture-ness of beijing and cityness/shanghainese of shanghai? I was also wondering... many people friends and teachers alike seem to not like the beijing retroflex (-rrr). What is business Chinese usually like? I have also read that those who speak the different shanghai dialect which is really different from mandarin, when switching over to mandarin have an accent. Is it likely that I will pick up on this accent? I read that beijing accent is most similar to "standard chinese". Would that be just the way beijing residents speak without the retroflex?? Please help! :) |

The Village I was Born Some of the young who were born in village are eager to move to big cities. I was born in suburban area of Shanghai. Though I hate so-called Shanghainese people in Centre Town, I struggled to the centre town. Still do I hate Shanghainese people after studying and living in the Centre Town, but to my surprise more and more migrants are showing their talent here to put an important impact on those natives. Two More SARS Cases in Shanghai That is terrible!! I think Chinese government should make sure people in the area which by affected by SARS won't go anywhere else, especially Beijing. I just saw the news online, people who work in Beijing try to go back to there home, and spread SARS to their area. WHO Reports Shanghai Findings I knew it! I knew it!! Sorry -_- I am so happy about WHO didn't find anything in Shanghai. Hopefully that is the truth, and hope Shanghai will stay in this shape. I am a senior of High School. I have signed up an airplan ticket for June 26th. But during the past 2 weeks, all the rumors, the number of increace was pretty bad to me. and my mom said if the SARS keep spreading in China. She won't let me go back to Shanghai!!
