36 Fight Between Foreigners and Local

I like this very thought provoking subject, were some japanese-owned businesses vandalized a couple of years ago? Unfortunately this happens in every part of the world almost on a daily basis for decades and centuries, and is it because of politics, discrimination, racism or brainwashing, I can't tell. I am of mixed race (part chinese with a U.S. passport) and very confused in these type of conflicts. I agree more communication and education is needed but the mindset is hard to change.

25 Checking-in Luggage for the Train?

JC: There are porters at the train stations of both cities that will help you with your luggage for a couple of US$, some even have golf carts that you can ride along with. They usually wear red caps or red vests and can be found near the special waiting lounge for Z trains passengers.

Good to know about your 2 one-way UAL tickets, I'm in SF too. Have a wonderful trip!

21 Who is Chinabounder

Stephen: Did you know that the person with the French attache turned out to be a male? The story provided the background for the show "M Butterfly". Also there is a Chinabounderess already.

Jian shou: It is confusing how "foreigner" is defined. White people only? Where do people from Latin America, Africa and other Asian countries fall into? What about chinese who are not born in China? Are they Chinabounders, or Turtles (hai gui, not bai gui or lao wai)?

14 Funny Icons, and More

Best time to see movies is when it's pouring rain. Let us know your thoughts after you see the Da Vince Code movie and why you "love" the book. MI3 is a so so movie for us overseas only worth watching the chase scenes shot in Pudong with Tom Cruise jumping off skyscrapers and running along the canals of Zhouzhuang or Wuzheng, didn't figure out which watertown.

As to shutting down the 2 movies, it has to do with politics or profits more than anything else ...

Jian Shou: Enjoy the rest of the week off!

Josh: Yes, Singapore developer and the building has been open for a few years now. Superior Puxi location since it's adjacent to the Metro Station and across the street from the People's Square. Nice shopping and eateries on lower floors. Jian Shou can fill you in the more details.

Bove: This is a top-level conference, Wuxi by Lake Tai with the yacht club would not have the facilities and infrastruture to handle it, think of the security alone.

11 46A is the Best Seat on Boeing 747

Great info, I like 46K too because I can turn right, put my head on a pillow against the window (shade down) and take a nap after I eat, then I feel good when I arrive at my destination. When I travel with my husband, I take 46 J so I put my head on his shoulder. Our daughter prefers 46 H so it works for the entire family.

10 City in China = County in U.S.

Yes, it is quite confusing regarding population and geographically in terms of square miles. There is the county of San Francisco with only one city, and the other 9 counties in the Bay Area with numerous cities each and San Jose is in the county of Santa Clara.

2 Muslim Restaurants in Shanghai

Bit About Halaal (Muslim dietary restrictions)

Because of the purity requirements of these foods, they tend to be a) fresher, and b) more healthy. According to what I could find on the web, the laws come from the Holy Koran, the Hadith, and the teachings of Hanafi, Shafii, Maliki and Hanbali. If you eat any (and they really mean any) Haraam foods, it affects the acceptance of worship. In a nutshell, the forbidden foods are as follows (source: www.jamiat.org.za):
Pork and pork products are totally forbidden.

Dairy products like cheese and margarine made from plant, microbes, synthetic rennet are okay

The utensils should be separate for Muslims and non-Muslims
Any item marked or stamped with any form of Halaal certification must be verified by Appointed the Muslim theologians well versed in Islamic requirements regarding Halaal
All carnivorous animals and birds, e.g. lions, tigers, vultures, eagles, etc.
Any Halaal animal that has died due to natural causes, killed by another animal, by a fall, or slaughtered by a non-Muslim
Flesh that has been sacrificed for some god or goddess
All forms of najasat (impurities)
Drugs/intoxicants
Animals that aren't traditionally used for food, donkeys, monkeys, elephants, etc.
Food containing Haraam items to be avoided at all times e.g. fish prepared with wine, cakes and ice-cream containing liquor
Contamination of a Halaal item with non-Halaal will render it non-Halaal/Haraam and unacceptable.

Foods that are allowed as long as it has been slaughtered by a Muslim ACCORDING TO ISLAMIC LAWS:

Fish that has been caught, i.e., not one that died a natural death
All types of poultry, partridges, pigeons, etc.
Goats, sheep, cattle, camel and all types of buck, buffalo.
Rabbits

Thanks,
Ali
