45 Shanghai Looks Similar to US, But...

What Mr. Wang mentioned in his article is not really the truth. At least I have a friend whose old house had to be dismantled becuase of municipal reconstruction got 1.5million RMB for each family (so her grandma who used to live with her also got 1 million RMB) and her house was not even in downtown Shanghai.

Besides, the economic change has tremendously improved most of Chinese life quality. If Mr. Wang denies this, it's really unfair to Chinese government. The political/social/law reform is based on economic development. As long as Chinese government focuses on economic development and education, eventually the reform will touch the political system.

Mr. Wang himself took the great benefit from Chinese reform. If he lived in China 20 years ago, it would be impossible for him to live in Shanghai and go abroad or even work for a big foreign company. So I think Mr. Wang really spreaded a wrong information to the world in a very negative way about China. Remember 20 years ago, it was illegal to discuss about this kind of topic privately...We have to admit compared to the past, China is taking a leap on every aspect. As a beneficiary of China, Mr.Wang need to be more responsible for the information he is spreading.

44 Where are You - Part II

I love your blog! I used it when I went to Shanghai back in 2004! I hail from Boston, Massachusetts USA! It is the in New England and also alot of American history is here from the "Boston Tea Party" to the Pilgrims coming to Cape Cod (south of Boston about an hour and a half drive away). Our city has great entertainment, world class cuisine and wonderful colleges (Harvard, MIT, Wellesley amongst others in the area), world renown hospitals ---Mass General, Beth Israel, Children's Hospital and great art museums---Glass Flowers collection at Harvard, Boston Museum of Fine Arts and the Isabella Garner Museum. I love the fact we are short driving distance away to Maine, New Hampshire, Connecticut and Rhode Island and NYC is only (4-6 hour drive away depending upon traffic). Once a year, Boston hosts a world class and world renown Head of the Charles Regatta (for crew enthusiasts) and of course the Boston Marathon every April.

36 Where to Study Chinese, Beijing or Shanghai?

I am chinesse indoensian and currently living in singapore. I also plan to go to Shanghai to study intensive mandarin for 3 month from Oct - Dec. i speak chinesse dialect so it makes it so much easier for me to pick up chinesee..but i just want to learn mmore structure writing and reading. I did tried to study in shanghai for 1 week when I went to shanghai last year..at iMandarin..it's only 2 people in the class..but i have to say the teacher are pretty good and the syllabus is very well prepared. But for the long term..I prefer to choose a place / university like Tongji uni or Tongji JBC. I visit Fudan and Jiatong as well at that time. But I found Fudan and Tongji main campus just too much hassle to access...so I narrow my choice to Jiaotong and Tongji JBC. After listen to Richard's comment..i think i'd rather choose Tongji JBC then. And also the customer service there is much much better. They are very helpful and responsive to my email. They charge USD 1,115 for 3 months (Oct 10 - Dec 30 ' 05).

I have checked all the uni, so far the best service I got is from Tongji JBC..they really take care of my needs, and the price is not much different from any other uni.
I do agree with Richard comment that location is so important in shanghai. i went to shanghai last year..and was soo stress up if I have to take the bus there..Location is so important in shanghai.

I also choose Shanghai cos I have so many Singaporean, malaysian and Chinesse friends in Shanghai. Which provide me a lot of pool to practice my chinesse...I feel more comfortable to have this gang of familiar friends to hang around..but they speak chinesse..so I can practice my chinesse as well.

Do contact me at anna_kpmg@hotmail.com if you also plan to go to Shanghai at that time..we can do gathering and spent our time to practice our chinesse together.

33 Is English Skill That Important

Great website! I was looking for info about PUDONG and stumbled upon it. Wonderful information and thanks for being so kind and friendly! As for learning English, it does help open up doors of communication of others. I do think it is important to have your own dialect/language as well. I can't speak my mom's dialect but I understand it and Mandarin/Cantonese. I studied Japanese, Vietnamese and Spanish (but I am able to do small talk at best with the others). I believe communication with others is vital for international understanding but "when in rome, do what romans do" I do agree. Or at least have people aware of this. Just my small two cents worth.

32 SARS is Back in China

it seems like only yesterday when i was panicking my way out of china. i've been reading the papers and have come across a couple articles about SARS. i'm not sure how i feel about it yet... since i'm now in the philippines. we're still gearing towards moving to shanghai regardless of the situation. for those who are in the same panic boat i was in last year, this blog helped me cope with the unecessary loss of sleep and paranoia.
let's hope this year's bout with sars will be a quick one.

30 My Dinner Impacted by SARS

i watched the news today.... according to WHO there is no evidence that statistics of sars cases have been covered up. Is it possible that they were driven around in vans just like in Beijing or are they really being honest about the numbers?

Yesterday, we got a phone call from my mother in law... she was happy about our decision to leave china and return to the philippines but she requested that we stayed away from their house for a couple of weeks. A few minutes later, I phoned my grandfather and told them that we were going be home in a matter of days and he also expressed that he was happy that we were leaving china but to stay away from them for a couple of weeks. At first, my husband and I went though feeling if abandonment. Then we progressed to anger. But after a few hours of deep analyzing the actions of our loved ones we began to understand the fear they must feel. The news in the philippines has probably been sensationalized so we're assuming that everyone will will run the opposite direction when they find out that we just came from china. So, we decided to be responsible for the disease that we might bring along from china... we will be imposing on ourselves a 10 day quarantine. My husband has a house in a province (about 1.5 hours from the Ninoy Aquino International Airport)so we're going to lock ouerselves up until we are sure that we are not infected with SARS. This way, everyone will be happy.
According to a friend who is in the Philippines... some travellers from infected countries are checking in at THE ASIAN HOSPITAL (a very expensive but beautiful and new... looks almost like a 5 star hotel) for a couple of weeks. We were going to check in ourselves but we did a little math and found out that we would be spending close to 1,000 US dollars if we did. It turns out that our trip home will take 10 days.... 2 hours on the plane and 10 days in the province. I guess this is the right thing to do.

27 Shanghai SARS: Situation Severe

i'm glad that shanghai is doing a great job trying to prevent the spread of sars. i'm still waiting for something to happen here in xiamen. xiamen daxue has made some steps in preventing sars but Xiamen itself hasn't done any public announcements. the taxis and buses are still dirty and the people still not aware of what sars is. i asked one of the vendors yesterday how he felt about sars and he said that he's shouldn't worry about sars since it's only in beijing and in hongkong. i'm not sure what is said on the local t.v. and radio stations but it seems that the locals are not informed at all. the whole world is watching china. at the univerity, only the foreign students were warned about sars. the chinese students still have not been given the necessary information to help prevent sars from spreading.

26 China is Taking SARS Seriously

Yes... China is finally dealing with sars head on... in our class yesterday they gave each student thermometers and we were told to check our temperature everyday. Then they gave us a hand-out with all the symptoms and how to prevent sars. This is what i've been waiting for. I think it's still possible to get this thing contained.

18 SARS: Culture Shock?

JIAN SHUO WANG
no offense taken.
i, however, am from a 3rd world county and if i may be honest... xiamen (where ia am now) is 100% cleaner than where i came from. the reason behind my paranoia is that i am not willing to take any risks about something deadly, especially where my 12 month old baby is concerned. i am sure that i can survive SARS. i am a strong, health 29 year old so in my case, my fear has nothing to do with culture shock.
i have practised all prevention measures but it is difficult to say that everyone around me and my family does the same.
another reason why most foreigners "over react" in situations like this is because China has been known to delay news that may cause the investors to panic... this may be such a idiotic thing to say but that is the genral feeling foreigners have.
i love china... and my husband and i have plans of living here... as soon as we make heads or tails of the situation.
by the way... thanks for all the important info. you've posted.

13 No SARS Case Found in Shanghai

caroline... you took the words right out of my mouth. i am currently in xiamen and the local government insists that there is no SARS here... we're closer to hongkong/guandong province than shangai and so far from what i've read there are 100 or so cases of sars there. i'm really getting worried because my little boy is here with me and to tell you the truth i'm extremely paranoid about him catching it. i've done everything i can from disinfecting our apartment to constantly washing hands but there is only so much we can do. For example: we have relatives visiting from a nearby province and one of them has a DRY COUGH and is always sneezing. I can't tell her not to breathe so i just have to watch every single move she makes. when she's not in the room, i go over whatever she touched with alcohol and water... it's true what they say... PARANOIA WILL DESTROY YOU... but i'm not willing to take the risk.I'm exhausted. I'm constantly searching the net for any information (reliable... that is) that can tell me what the hell is really goig on. So far i've heard or read nothing about Xiamen... this makes me more paranoid.

7 SARS Outbreak - How Bad Is It?

oh... i forgot to mention something...

2 months ago my baby developed some kind of gastroenteritis. at that time i was unaware that there was this SARS outbreak. I took my baby to Xiamen's #1 hospital and the Doctor on duty gave him RIBAVIRIN. At that time I was puzzled as to why they would give antibiotics used for Respiratory problems to my child who had gastroenteritis. Just this morning i realized... maybe they thought it was sars. Maybe it was SARS. If so... they didn't tell me anything. they just gave my baby the medication via drip then asked us to go home. My baby is now ok but what if he didn't get well. what if something happened to him... who would i balme? shouldn't they be more transparent to the patients? i get goose bumps everytime i think about what happened.

6 SARS Outbreak - How Bad Is It?

SHANGHAI KNIGHT: ok... let me get this straight... i may get SARS from someone who doesn't show any symptoms because he is still in the incubation period?

WEI SONG: i live in xiamen and let me tell you that no one knows for sure if there have been SARS infected people here. we've heard of 2 university students dying but nothing official has been reported. our professors keep telling us that we shouldn't panic but because the media has been so "hush-hush" about it we have become more paranoid. the locals are still unaware of the real danger of this virus. everyone still spits everywhere and everyone still coughs and sneezes without trying to cover thier mouths. it's really difficult for me because i have a little baby and yet i have to realize that this is just how it is. i'm still waiting for "OFFICIAL NEWS". till then i don't have a choice but to live in fear. as soon as i'm done with my business here, i'm flying out of here and never coming back. unfortunately, many foreigners also feel the way i feel which is bad for China.
final thought: how could there be no SARS in Xiamen? We're close to HongKong and the GuanDong Province.
