31 One Child Policy in China

I don't see why its a big surprise that the BRIC countries will be poorer than the G6. The per capita GDP of the G6 is streets ahead of those developing countries.
Will China overtake Japan and the US in terms of GDP - most likely, but with their massive populations this won't automatically mean a leap in individual wealth - that will take many decades to grow.

Will the one child policy have an impact on the economy? - only if it remains in place indefinately, but looking at how the Chinese government has engineered their economy, social and democratic emergence of the past 20 years, I really don't believe they would be foolish enough to keep in place some a long term damaging policy.

29 Waited Long for Yuxin Sichuan Dish

It always depends on personal preference and what you plan to use the camera for.

I am a keen supporter of Pentax. I use a Pentax *ist DL, it is the smallest and lightest of the digital SLRs.

Its a beautiful camera, but I have always used Pentax, even with my old film SLR and even my compact digital cameras are Pentax (Optio S5i and Optio MX).

I have tested many models of Canon and Nikon digital SLRs, but I find them too `chunky'. The Pentax ist DL is more ergonomically friendly (nicer and easier to hold).

You can learn about it here - http://www.pentax.co.uk/product_details.php?divisionid=2&productid=1232&parentid=15

Good luck with the shopping - its always fun!

Hey Bellevue

I missed you - where have you been? There hasn't been anyone monologuing about censorship for awhile.

23 The City and Its Moral Boundary

Hey Goliath,

I totally agree - it is a pitiful amount, even they have had a 100% pay rise since you asked..

I am sure that it is an agent that hires them, but obviously the company whose product/service that appears on the card knows what is happening. I have never heard of an advertiser that is uncertain as to how their advertising dollar is being spent and where/how they are being represented.

And if a company stops using that advertising method do these "farmers' lose their income? An interesting conundrum!

It becomes then a moral question of "Do we put up with this unruly behaviour so these people can earn a living?" or "Do we stop the practice/behaviour because some people don't like, but take away the jobs of these boys?"

22 The City and Its Moral Boundary

I had those business card guys throw them at me through the open window of a taxi when we left the new Pudong convention centre.

It really scared the crap out of my girlfriend and I because they ran towards the car and started throwing things. Your initial thought is of fear because of the unknown. After we realised what it was we were relieved, but still angry.

The companies need to be taught a lesson to not use these method. Everyone should boycott the companies that use these methods (usually airlines that can't afford to advertise in a main stream media - which raises the question - can they afford to maintain their aircraft? Use the right tyres, brake fluids etc).

How about we make a campaign to collect all the cards and send them back to the companies that are advertising in these metods. That would be fun.

Or better still, we can hire some cheap young dudes and send them in to the offices of these companies throwing around little cards saying "Stop throwing @#&%$ cards at me!"

Or maybe carry a water pistol and squirt them with lemon juice if they try to give you a card.

I think I could go on for days.....

Hey Bellevue, your comments are extremely boring and repetitive.
Yes, we know there is censorship in China. What else do you want to say?

By the way, if you choose a topic to rant about, spell it the right way. Its censorship, not cencorship.

18 KFC Dropped Potato Wedge in Shanghai

The rumours of Pepsi's death in KFC are greatly exaggerated.

KFC haven't removed Pepsi - it was loud and proud at the store I was in today. On the menu board you could still get a 1.25l bottle with a bucket meal. I had a Pepsi with my burger. I didn't see any chips though - so I'd say they are gone.

People that overly critise this type of food as junk and want to get it removed are very narrow minded in my opinion. It has its place in the modern world of speed and convenience. Whilst I applaud the introduction of salads (such as McDonald's have done in Australia and some other countries) to give a healthy choice inside QSRs (Quick Service Restaurants) the demand is always going to be there for a quick hamburger, chips and Coke. It is a matter of personal choice as to whether you eat it every day and get fat and/or sick.

Thats what I love about personal chioice - if you like it - eat it, if you don't like then don't eat - but don't give everyone else grief about their choice.

15 Happy Autumn Festival

Happy Mid Autumn Festival to you all!

Ying and I enjoyed a walk through China Town (Sydney) where she had a moon cake.

I must admit, I don't actually like moon cakes. I find them too sweet and too heavy - but I like the symbolism of sharing and showing your friends and family that you are thinking of them.

Our next Mid Autumn Festival (Moon Cake Festival I always remember it as) will be in Shanghai - so I look forward to sharing it with Ying and her family.

14 Donghai Bridge

Hey zhang - thats really funny to read! I can relate to him well - especially because in Australia we drive on the left side of the road as well, so I was always looking the wrong way!

I kept looking to the wrong side of the windscreen for the rear vision mirror! Made it interesting when dodging pedestrians and cheacking that no scooters were coming up from behind - I would look and there was no mirror so I would just weave anyway.
Lots of fun!!

13 Donghai Bridge

ha ha - I know what you mean zhang - Paris is crazy, cars everywhere, no lanes - but you know what is even worse - ROME - they will squeeze a car into every cm of the road - people ride their scooters with their mobile phone in one hand and a cigarette in the other - all while dodging cars and trucks everywhere. Sabrina and I were there just the other month - you can read our experience if you wish here: http://madaboutshanghai.blogs.com/mad_about_shanghai/2005/06/europe_trip_par_2.html

But the interesting thing to note, is that although they are crazy drivers, there seems to be very few accidents, because everyone has driven for many years and have a lot of experience.

I look forward to the challenge of driving in Shanghai when I get there in October.

12 When the House Prices Goes Down

Johnny,
I don't think anyone was being critical of the government here. In fact, I believe that everyone is saying that the government has done the right thing by putting `the brakes on' a real estate market that was beginning to spiral out of control.

What the government has done is tried to stop the real estate prices moving out of reach of the average person, for this they should be congratulated!

Living in Sydney Australia, I can tell you how hard it is for people when property prices run up uncontrolled. Here we have seen property prices double in the last 3 - 5 years with no change in the income of the average home. This has meant that home ownership is just a dream now for many people. The Chinese government is trying to prevent that from happening, and they are starting to achieve their goal. The only thing they really need to watch out for is that investors do not get driven away, otherwise in the long term there will be a shortage of rental properties, which will drive up rental prices. This can only be bad, because there will always be people who rent - out of choice or necessity.

11 Pudong Starbucks is Nice

If you would like to see some more information about the history of coffee in China - have a look here: http://madaboutshanghai.blogs.com/mad_about_shanghai/china_in_general/index.html

10 Pudong Starbucks is Nice

I think that Starbucks and similar multi national franchises that consider themselves to be `Up Market' can charge what they want for products because of their market position, and the fact that so many people continue to go there.

Starbucks is overpriced, there is no doubt. The food cost for the coffee itself is around US15 cents, the milk around 15 - 30 cents (depending on the type and size of the coffee) and the paper cost (cup, lid, holder) would come to about 35 cents (yes - the packaging costs more than the food!) - gives a total of say 80 cents tops, then they charge $3 or $4. Thats a good business.

Although the price is high, obviously the price is not too high, because people keep going back there for coffee. Go to any Starbucks and see the number of people inside - that will show you that the price is not too high.

The factor that does contribute to their high pricing is their high overheads. To deliver you a hot cup of coffee in the right location (convenient to you) means they pay a premium for the rent (to get the best loaction possible). Plus they have quality equipment, well trained staff (well, most of the time), a big head office etc etc - all the things you don't have in a small cafe or tea house that increase the operating cost.

As for China, as John said, there is not much competetion but a lot of people. With the new found wealth of a lot of people and a growing middle class, their is an increasing disposable income which allows people to do things they (and previous generations) may not have previously had the chance to do. Some of those things are to emulate what is seen from the west, and as many movies/TV shows show people meeting in and visiting Starbucks - that is adopted as part of the western culture.

So I think that for many people in China and other parts of the world, Starbucks is a status symbol of a young, wealthy generation.

8 Thinking about Sony F828

I recently bought a Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ20, and have been very pleased with it. If you see one in a store here, you may want to compare it to the Sony. It's only 5MP, but it has a very sharp 432mm equivalent lens, and goes for about 4000RMB. However, if I was going to spend in the 7000RMB range, I'd probably go for the Canon 300D instead.

3 Starbucks in A Day

This is a great project! I really enjoy these kinds of collections of places. It's too bad all of the confluences around Shanghai have already been visited, but I may have a chance to hit one in Yunnan during New Year.

By the way, a new Starbucks opened in my office building recently, and I can't find it on their website. There's no sign for it on the outside of the building, but it's in Hongqiao, Shanghaimart (世贸商城, 2299 Yan'An Rd) on the first floor. If you go to the Zunyi Rd Starbucks, it's about a 10 minute walk away.

Any other suggestions?? I'm sending the Endads.com host strongly worded emails with each popup incident, all I get back is a cyber-form letter saying they're "looking into it"...

I'd like 5 minutes with this jerk-off...
