Youth Hostels in Shanghai Captain is now also charging 70y a night, and although the facilities are quite good (and location), some of the desk service personel are rather lacking in good customer service skills. I'm hoping some new hostels will start up so that prices will decrease again. It's a bit ridiculous that you can get a dorm bed in a quite developed city like Chengdu or Yangshuo for as little as 15 yuan, but it's 70 yuan in Shanghai, and that increase is just in the last year and a half! |

Rent an Apartment in Shanghai Hi I am looking for an one bedroom apartment in Shanghai. Right now I am looking at Top of the city. The apartment is great, but there are two problems. 1) I have seen a few and the decor is quite bad. Something a little more decent would be good. Most of them either look like a college accom or throw in the cheapest Ikea furniture. I am not asking for any expensive furniture, just something more decent. 2) It seems there are many many one bedrooms there for rent now. But the prices are being controlled my agents. I went to one agent and he shows me three or four and tells me thats all in the market, then same day I go to another real estate shop and they show me a few different ones and tell me thats it. While I am looking with the agent, I see another agent from another shop showing more one bedrooms apartments. Anyone knows a one bedroom there with more decent decor please let me know. No SARS Case Found in Shanghai Jianshuo: Thank you for providing this channel for information. In four days, I have to decide whether to bring a group of American students to Shanghai for the summer. Your Blog was very helpful to me! Are there active "local chains of transmission" of SARS in Shanghai? If anyone has information on either side of this question, please let me know. The contrast between the information flows in China and the US is so amazing: I watch the CDC press conferences in Atlanta - every tiny piece of information is pursued by the press and provided; whereas Health Minister Zhang in Beijing had soooo much trouble providing accurate information for China. Well, I sympathize with China's leaders - change is always hard to do - China is changing very quickly, it's amazing how much it has changed, this crisis shows us that there is still some distance to go before China will be an open society.
