30 Visited Yangshan Deep Water Port

Jian Shuo,
I'm a newcomer to your blog, but I have found it very interesting reading, as I am about to embark on a trip to Shanghai via freighter ship from the UK. If it's not too much to ask, I am interested to find out more about how one gets from Yangshan, across the Donghai Bridge, to Shanghai, as my ship is currently scheduled to arrive at the Yangshan Deep Water Port. Do you, or any of the other contributors to this blog, know what the easiest (or not-so-easy, as the case may be!) way of doing this might be?

27 Train Tickets in Shanghai Railway Station

Hi!
I'm working in Shanghai-Wai Gao Qiao. One friend of mine from Changzhou wants to visit me, coming by train. There is any possibility to come by train directly in Pu Dong area? How much costs one train ticket from Changzhou to Shanghai. Chipper than bus ticket on the same distance?

23 Crime and Beggars in Shanghai

The only scam I've come accross in Shanghai is a guy pretending to be an English teacher. He stands in peoples square. He talks to westerners and asks them if they would like to join him for a coffee, so he can practice his English. If you are stupid enough to go with him he takes you to a coffee shop above a beijing olimpics shop, then he has a little bite to eat, (a plate of fruit) when the bill comes you are expected to pay, about 300 yuan. I can't belive I was such a twat! Thankfully I didn't pay it all, but it still pissed me off.

22 Visa Card on ATM in China

I am helping an elderly friend prepare for a 3 week trip to China in June and just got him an ATM card from Bank of America. What are the specifics of use at the machine? Is there an English option and what is the currency and approximate exchange rate? He is totally unfamiliar with ATM usage and I have only used one in Europe.

Hi there! I've been watching your blog for a while and truly enjoy it. Do you know if common mobile phones in China are location aware? My social network service, Socialight (http://socialight.com), let's people capture, share, and discover notes (including notes with phonecam pictures attached) tagged with location information and we're exploring bringing it to China.

Thank you for helping us out Wang. I couldn't access my personal account for weeks, although e-mails for my business are still being delivered via Outlook. For anyone else who's having problems with Hotmail checkout "TorPark". Runs on Mozilla Firefox as a type of circumventor browser.

13 Skiing in Shanghai

Jerry,

You may be expecting too much from this facility. You have to try it out but go for the experience, not for the skiing. I went a few years back and had a great time. For an experienced skier like yourself you may find it disappointing. There is only one "run". The complex consists of on giant incline that has a lift running up the left side. I'd say the steepest (top) section is around 12-14 degrees. Nothing to challenging but I still managed to have a great time. Be sure to check this out if you are visiting Shanghai.

12 Thanks for your Comments

A very nice website. very neat and informative. Just a couple of comments,

1. You need to pay more attention to your English. I know your English is good. But since you have a lot of international viewers, you'd better make it better. For examples, in your self-introduction page, grown --> grew. Also I found some tense mistakes here and there.

2. I will post this comment later after I read more of your blog.

Good luck and keep working hard on it!

9 Network Infrustucture in my Home in Shanghai

The alternative right now is to log in one machine directly to the liine, figure out the what the assigned IP/Subnet/Gateway/DNS addresses are, then set the router manually to these. This works until the Dynamic IP changes, which seems to take several days. It's working so far. We may have to just flow with this. I'm not familiar with the other providers out here, my roommates had help getting this set up before I arrived. Any suggestions for alternative providers? Thanks!

8 Network Infrustucture in my Home in Shanghai

I'm living in Guangzhou with a few roommates, and we also have GWBN. When first connecting via the web, it redirects our browser to a login webpage. The internet connection won't go further until this is done. No problem for one computer, but now we are trying to install a router. We've tried Linksys and Netgear routers, both of which lock up once the outside line is hooked in. Any idea how to get this to work on GWBN?

2 Stop NET SEND spam

I was just thinking, why not write a program that resides on the net send/net bios port, and once it detects an incoming, it sends hundreds of thousands of net spam messages back at the fastest possible rate. Have enough people with cables and dsl's and you could really put a major blow down.
