Taihu! Taihu! Taihu! I've never been to Taihu yet, but I've been to Hangzhou (I love this city) and Nanjing (like it, too!). Is Taihu where the Taihu Lake is where there's this auspicious stone with holes is located? Just read about it somewhere but not sure. |

Photo of People's Square Area It's remarkable to see the changes done in People's Square area especially within the metro station exits. There are pedestrian tunnels there now as well but some would still prefer to cross the streets and jaywalk as I've noticed. |
99 |
Xiang Yang Market is Closed on June 30 It would be sad to see the Xiangyang Market go. I hope the government won't close down Qipu Market as well. :( |

Long Vacation of Spring Festival Comes Ni hao JS! Xinnian kuaile! Best wishes for a wonderful and successful 2006! :) |

Watching Super Girl Finale in Donews Office I know this Super Girl show is really famous all over the Middle Kingdom, so who won? Is it the short-haired girl who was rumored to be a lesbo? |

Price Increase of Shanghai Metro I hope this increase in metro price would mean more trains as well so that the waiting time will be decreased. 5 minutes or even more than that (as trains here can be late as I've observed) of waiting time is not convenient and inefficient at all. I believe this is also the reason why there's overcrowding...there are only a few trains that can service the passengers. |

We Filled Our Lives But Lost Our Souls I have been asking myself the "Why am I here?" question, too, most of the time when I feel the quarter-life crisis 'loop.' But I also realized that one way for us to answer this is to reflect on what we really want to do, want to have and what we want to achieve in every aspect of our lives. For example, in looking for a satisfying career, are you motivated by status or an nth-figure salary? Or by making a difference in the world, etc.? Knowing who you really are deep down and not just relying on what other people say or have to say about you is a key for answering this perennial question. Once you do, then you'll definitely feel happiness and contentment. Nietzsche's "become who you are" phrase helps. |

PVG: Buses to Hangzhou, Suzhou... Hi Jeannie, There are buses that will take you from Hangzhou to Shanghai. The most convenient way would be the train. |

Celebrating 1000 Days of Blogging Keep up the good work, JS! BTW, what software did you use to run this type of report that shows the number of comments made by your blog visitors? Thanks. Congratulations! :) |

Complicated Paying Process There is a similar practice in one of the corporate buildings in Makati, Philippines. Customers enter the foodcourt and would get a plastic card from the guard at the entrance. They can use this card to order food at different stalls where the vendors will swipe the cards in a machine that would register the costs of the customer's orders. The customers can then eat their food. When they're finished eating, they go to the exit area where the cashiers are and they can pay their food. There's only one entry and there's another exit point and both are well-managed. This is like an "eat now, pay later" foodplace, which I find amazing and not very complicated than the practice here in Dashidai, you think? |

My Site is Almost Legal in China Hi JS, it's good to have visited your site again after some time and nice to know this'll be legal anytime soon. How much would it cost you to register your blog by the way? Thanks and have a great weekend! ;) |

Daily Build Script Sample Maybe this is the reason why your next entry is just a big white SPACE. Hahaha! |

On Ethic The pedestrians here just surprised me so much the very first time I tried to cross a street. They don't care whether it's Walk or Stop. The same with buses, cars or bikes - there's only one light in the traffic system that they respect and that's the green light. It's shocking 'coz this is a big city and is aiming to be a world-class one. The city's developments may be quicker than Moody's goose, but the people's manners are still (I'm sorry to say this) not at par or even backwards. I'm not pertaining to all but majority of the population don't practice good manners and social skills, which is really sad and frustrating. I wanted to practice the old saying: "When in China, do what the Chinese do," but I'd rather not. Well, I believe that change is good and I only hope that when things continue to change for the better in this country, so will the people's manners and way of interacting to others. |
86 |
Chengdu Impression HK is ok for the first few days but because it's too crowded, there are a lot of people and heavy traffic everywhere, you're just dying to get out of that place. But that's just my opinion. |
85 |
Featured in That's Shanghai I didn't have much time to visit your blog for several weeks because I'm always swamped at work. Anyway, I want to thank you again JS for sending me a copy of that's mag. I really appreciate it. I know you'll go a long long way with your blog in helping "lost and dumb-founded" foreigners/visitors/tourists in crazy Shanghai. Keep up the good work! :) |
84 |
Happy New Year! Xin nian kuai le, JS and Wendy! :) |

Vote Me as Bloggies Best Asian Blog To those who missed the voting (like me), too bad. Hopefully, JS's blog is one of the finalists so we can all come back to the site and vote for him to win. Goodluck, JS "On Thursday, January 20, the finalists will be announced and voting will be open again to choose the winners. Voting will close at 10:00 PM EST on Sunday, January 31. The winners will be posted sometime between Sunday, March 13 and Tuesday, March 15." |

Cheat-Sheet of Shanghai Road Names thanks for this cheatsheet, JS! this is really helpful! :) |
76 |

75 |
UA858 PVG - SFO Hope you and Wendy have a safe and enjoyable flight via United Air! [Will I pass as a flight stewardess with this phrase? hehehe!] |
74 |
Xiang Yang Market Again I don't know how to bargain as well, that's why when I bought a winter coat in Xiang Yang Market, I still paid much for it, though it was nice. I usually shop at Qipu Road Fashion Market, with Chinese work colleagues as they know how to bargain. The stuff here are really cheap and nice (if you know how to look at the quality). Most people who shop here, however, are locals, so it's better to bring someone who can speak and understand Chinese. Also, expect this place to be so crowded on weekends. By the way, they're only open up to 6pm everyday. |
73 |
Edward's New Satellite TV hey JS, if satellite dishes are still forbidden here in China, why do i see a lot of satellite dishes installed in our neighborhood? |
72 |
Sleeping Cats Really really cute sleeping cats! Now I wish I have a cat, too! :) |
71 |
Boston for Dummies and More. Shanghai for Dummies is indeed an excellent idea. I think you should do it, JS! :) |
70 |
I Got my U.S. Visa Wow, congratulations for getting the visa without any hassle! In my country, it's extremely difficult to obtain a US visa, it's expensive and takes almost a year to process. Mon dieu, the paradox of modern societies! :) |
69 |
Basic Geographic Knowledge about China I also experienced this dilemma when I arrived here, I got confused and lost with names and geography of the cities of China. I messed them up with the names of the streets of Shanghai. Well, I should've brought China map with me, in the first place. |
68 |
Two Cats in my Garden By the way, what are the cats' names? :-) |
67 |
Two Cats in my Garden Aaawww, that's so sweet of you and Wendy! I love cats...too bad, I don't have a pet cat here in Shanghai. Cats are fun to be with and you'll really enjoy their company. :-) |
66 |
Top Commenters of Jul, Aug, Sep, Oct Congratulations, JS for having reached the first 1 million page view! Indeed, that's a milestone for your site. Honestly, haven't visited your site for almost 2 weeks and lot of things are happening. And I bet I'm not included as one of the top commentors for this month...that's for sure hehehe! Keep up the good work! :) |
65 |
M7 Started Construnction Near my Home Happy OOB day, JS! Enjoy your time with your family! :-) |
64 |
A Car Towed Away for Temp Parking Yeah, me too. You got me there, JS. I thought it was your car that was towed. Too bad, it would've been VERY interesting if it's yours, eh? Just kidding! :-) |
63 |
So Many Typos in Shanghai Metro - Part III I don't want to comment further. But JS, just to add to the typos, I also saw this sign in the Metro that read "Mind Your Head" (I just don't know the Chinese warning for that) and I don't have a picture. This was actually the first Metro sign I saw when I first rode the Metro and (I don't want to offend anybody but) it's funny. I don't think it's the ''grammatically correct'' way to warn people of the short vertical distance from the floor to the top that they might hit their heads if they're not careful enough. |
62 |
Why We Use English Signs? Interesting discussion! Haven't visited JS's blog for a week and suddenly, people are having a heated argument/debate about using English signs. Geno had explained his opinions well, no doubt about that. I just want to say that it's important that we keep an open mind, RESPECT and accept each other's differences in race, culture, language, society, religion, etc. Let's keep our cool, peeps :-) |
61 |
Happy Birthday to Me Hey, JS! HAPPY HAPPY 27th BIRTHDAY! May you have more birthdays to come! :-) |
60 |
Look into My Life I checked your route on my Shanghai map and it's indeed crazy. But if you're happy with that, then you just have to stick to it...unless there's a much better and more convenient way, right? Hey, JS, happy training at Guangzhuo, btw! :-) |
59 |
Rush Hours in Metro Line #2 First thing that came to mind when I saw the picture of the large crowd at the Metro: "OH MY GOD!" |
58 |
Shanghai Metro Line #1 - Part III Thanks for giving us a detailed information about the Metro Line 1. This will surely be helpful to new comers. Have a nice day, JS! |
57 |
National Holiday Begins Stephen, My Chinese workmate told me that they don't really receive a week-paid holiday. What happens is that they compensate their one week vacation by working on weekends. And the legal holidays are only from Oct 1-3. :-) |
56 |
Orange Harvest in my Garden Pudong, for me, is more convenient and much safer to live in. Nothing wrong with Puxi, though. Just had a bad experience there with my friend. :-) Happy harvesting, JS! |
55 |
Happy Mid-Festival Happy Mooncake Festival! (though I'm a day delayed for my greeting since tomorrow's gonna be the National Day celebration and I don't have a break for the holidays, too bad!) Happy Holidays, JS and Wendy! Hope to meet you one of these days! :-) |
54 |

Posting my Mobile Number All of us only have six degrees of separation so, it's really a small world. It's good to know that your world's expanding. I bet you're now an international star...in your own small way (through your great blog). Congrats, JS! :-) |
51 |
Goudaner Scratched by Drunk Driver Wow, the media even said "the police are doing the right thing?" Damn! That's really lame. Now, I'm wondering why I want to work in Shanghai. :-( |
50 |
Negative Comments for this Blog Hey, JS! I agree with what these commenters/fans-of-your-lovely-blog were saying. Do what your passion is, which is writing. It's the greatest thing ever. Keep it up, JS! We're just around. :-) |
49 |
Flowers Bloom on MSN Messenger It's sad and pathetic, you know. Some people keep on ranting or giving comments and suggestions about how other people should live their lives when they don't even take a look at their own and do something about it first. How can people help other people when they can't even help themselves? One can't share love or a part of one's self to others if s/he doesn't love him/herself more. Just ranting... |
47 |
Hong Kong MTR Wow, that surely is a very tiring job! But that's the challenge. So, goodluck, JS! And you have a safe travel always! :-) |
46 |
Hong Kong - the Amazing City It's good to hear from you again, JS! And great to know that you had a fantastic time in HK! :-) |

37 |
Doorplate not Used in Beijing Hmmm...locating a place that way is quite strange but interesting. You think more people can find their way using this method? Hehehe. |
36 |
About Starbucks Tour in Beijing Goodluck JS! I really like your idea of taking pictures of Starbucks in a city. I think it's one way of knowing a city and how it is coping with the modernities of time. Rock on! :D |
35 |
Lonely Planet, Lonely Journey These words really came out from your heart. I felt your sadness. As what they say, "one can never have everything in life." So, even if we get something we've always wanted, there will always be a downside or negative aspect to that. Nevertheless, it's still all up to us on how we want to live our lives. Goodluck on balancing your career challenges and family! :D |
34 |
TGI Shanghai Welcome home JS! There's no place like home, right? :D |
33 |
Busy Life Started Again Nice philospohy you have about people, change and the environment! Since you'll be travelling a lot, you should enroll in the club membership of the airlines that you always fly with to earn miles for benefits and privileges. Happy travelling! :D |

I Saw my Name on BusinessWeek Wow, you're indeed more famous now! I think I will buy that latest Businessweek with your name on it. Now, you're featured on the "Cult of Personality." What if on the next magazine edition, you'll be featured as the cult leader, hehehe. Just kidding! Congrats, JS for a job well done! :D |
27 |
MTBlackList is Better than IP Banning Wow, I don't know what to say! Impressive! Spammers should just die, really! :D |
26 |
Flying to Beijing Again I just wonder why it's more expensive to fly from Shanghai to Beijing? Any idea? |
25 |
To Focus or Not? much have been said and commented already so i just wanna say that i agree with what they're saying. it's more interesting and enticing to read a personal standpoint, opinion and experience than a merely focused yet constricted and boring topic of discussion. you have a right to freedom of expression so just be yourself! i love your good work, JS! keep rockin'!:D |
24 |
MSN.COM Offers 2G Storage? oh, yeah. it's going to be 250MB. sorry, my bad! it has already been 10MB for free accounts but will be 250MB in i-don't-know-when. :D |
23 |
MSN.COM Offers 2G Storage? MSN paying accounts have 2GB of storage limit, while free Hotmail or MSN accounts will have 10MB. I just don't know if they have already activated the 10MB for the free accounts, though. |
22 |

Cannot Post Comment on this Site? This is really interesting stuff! I'd like to be able to do that someday, too - banning spammers and hopefully, eradicating them from the face of the internet world. That would be very nice, don't you think? hehehe. |
19 |
New Issue of City Weekend I didn't know you like to make terms into acronyms. I really LOL when I found out about FOAF! That was funny! Thanks for making my day hehehe! :D |
18 |
Transferred to Microsoft Consulting Service Congrats, JS! I'm so happy for you! Goodluck to your new organization and responsibilities as well! God speed! |
17 |
Five Years in Microsoft Amazing! Congratulations, JS! I thought MS gave you X-Box as a gift. But the clock is really nice. Now, I know it's not a good idea to give clocks to my Chinese friends. Congrats again and keep up the good work! :D |

13 |

Shanghai is the Second Unhappiest City That's a very good book and is one of my favorites. For me though, happiness is a feeling and you can only feel happiness when it comes from the heart. Because when the heart speaks, the mind cannot object thus it gives in to the lightness of the emotion. |
9 |
Top Commenters of May 2004 Wow! I didn't know you were giving an award for that, hahaha! I am very flattered that I made it on the Top Ten list! Thanks, Jian Shuo! :D |
8 |
Successful Presentation Skill Training Hi Jianshuo! I tried to download the file but when I clicked on "Download file" it says "The page cannot be found" so I'm wondering whether the link works. Thanks! |
7 |
Got Two Links (Gifts) Today Hmmm...the comments are getting spicier here. Interesting! :D |
6 |
Wangjianshuo's Blog is Famous I agree that your blog is one of the famous blogsites. Maybe because Shanghai is not just a great place to visit or work but also because you are such a great and accommodating person. You're really doing a good job with your blog. I actually suggested to my friends to visit your site and they were really amazed at it and enjoyed reading your entries. Keep up the good work, Jian Shuo, our friend in Shanghai. :-D |
5 |
Beijing 2008 Olympic Emblem Unvieled I agree. It's a brilliant logo. A clever yet fun way of presenting the country's culture. Even the font is distinctly Chinese. Amazing! :-D |

Hand-Made Map of Pudong Area As I have searched further, I have found out that Guoshuojing road is a place in Zhangjiang Hi-Tech Zone in Pudong New Area. It's very interesting! :-) |
3 |
Hand-Made Map of Pudong Area I was trying to find Zhangjiang district in Shanghai map I gathered from searching in Google but I only managed to find a map for Shanghai Subway. What confused me is that Zhangjiang is near Pudong Central Park, so that means that it is in the Pudong area. Is that right? Is Pudong considered a district or municipality in Shanghai? I am really confused. Please enlighten me on this. Oh by the way, the website that I was able to find about the Shanghai subway was http://www.urbanrail.net/as/shan/shanghai.htm. Thanks lot! :-D |
2 |
Hand-Made Map of Pudong Area Hi Jian Shuo, I am just wondering if Guoshoujing Road is found in Pudong area. I was trying to locate it in your map viewer but it was in Chinese and I was not successful in finding the place. Thanks! |
