Error in Western Media Report about Tibet Yeah Peter...something needs to be done about situation in Sudan too...but then again it isn't as clear cut like in the Tibet's case...furthermore, there is a form of power balance in Sudan itself, even if UN doesn't quite intervene....this does not happen in Tibet...there's some international awareness...but isn't it funny how the rest of China (even in Tibet itself) is so quiet...... i don't believe this is a natural occurrence of events...some big brothers are trying to hush them up...(yes thats my presumptions, i admit it) The other reason why there US's invasion (again, i do to a certain extent call it an invasion, bush is full of bullshit really) cannot be compared to that of China is the fact that there are common americans, housewives, schools kids, teachers, military man OPPOSING bush's decision to send US troops over. There are normal Americans who care about the the liberty of these people...enough to led them to mass demonstrations against US's treatment of Iraqis... Do I see the same thing in china? No. Do I see normal Han Chinese on the street of Beijing voicing concerns about Tibetans and standing up for these peoples rights? No... What they echo is what Beijing wants to hear...and all 1.3 billion people sing to the same tune...when even in a small of 30, you will hear students with different views...and what is this? 1.3 billion individual with one collective view? I dont want to say more..... Have said the same thing when China outlawed FLG and run trunks over students in 1989....have been called a racist too... from experience.... anything that does not sit with with the party equals to anti-china and that means anti-chinese; hencefore "racist"...... |

Disturbed Lunch Dear Gunjan, I AM TAKING IT VERY PERSONALLY THAT YOU ARE THROWING ACCUSATIONS OF ME BEING A RACIST. MAN, WHICH PART OF ANY POST DID I EVER EXHIBIT RACIAL SUPERIORITY OR CHINESE INFERIORITY? YOU HAVE BETTER PULL OUT GOOD SUBSTANTIAL EVIDENCES TO PROVE SO. THIS PERSONAL ATTACK IS SO UNCALLED FOR. YOU SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF YOURSELF - FOR BEING SUCH A VENOM-SPITTER Dear Jianshuo, Can you please see to this and put an end to names calling and malicious distortion of my original comment. I seriously suspect that more than half of these people did not read my original post and were just building onto what they see from other user's comments. I am pissed. Very pissed. |

Error in Western Media Report about Tibet Food for thought everyone... When I was a first year uni student many years ago, one of the first thing my lecturer asked was "who loves your country"... The next thing he said was "if you love your country, I need you to throw that out. You cannot be objective when you love one thing for than another, same for country." Then he taught me something that I have lived my day by for the rest of my political life... "PATRIOTISM IS A FORM OF REVERSED DISCRIMINATION" |

Error in Western Media Report about Tibet Dear Ally, The Brits did not massacre the hongkies.... Nope..but in Tibet up to a million were killed. The Dalai Lama was denounced, the Panchen lama (a six year old boy) was kidnapped. The hongkies did not oppose the British's rule and in fact many migrated overseas to avoid HK's "re-unification" with China. The majority who migrated, migrated to UK. They actually prefer UK's rule rather your beloved China. There is self-determination available for the hongkies in HK, not in Tibet. |

Error in Western Media Report about Tibet Dear Ambassador Perkin, I have another issue for your consideration. For the "suggestions" that you have given, they would only work when everyone has come to agree that Tibet (or perhaps East Turkestan, Taiwan and Mongolia for the same reason) belongs to China and is a "province" that is currently trying to break free from Beijing. Now this is something that the majority of the people has problem - not whether Tibet has suffered less human rights in comparison to the more economically advanced states like Shanghai and Beijing which would then render it a "civil problem" but rather Beijing ever has the right to rule over Tibet (which would then render it an "international violation of human rights"). How people see the above issue would dictate who's side they are on and the outcome they seek. Obviously, most people here like Jianshuo who has already confimed his stand that he loves China and wants the best for it would be on the side of Beijing who strong believe that Tibet is all but a province of China. Therefore, in conclusion this site would NOT serve as a neutral forum for unbiased discussion because people are all in a way or another influenced by their beliefs and the way they see things. To take my point further, I would like to draw to your attention that in social research there is this thing called sampling where we use subjects from unbiased random selection process to ensure the accuracy of data collected. This means that essentially the comments generated from WJS's blog cannot conform to the requirement of the unbiased factor. People who are regular followers of his site basically fall nicely into two categories - Group 1: Expats who live in china This group of people typically has a vested interest in China, either holds high managerial position ins China or are investors who are pro-China, obviously, because they want their money to grow. Are people who love China altogether, the culture, the language, the way of life and maybe even the girls. Then this would create the third characteristic of these expats: people who have a family in China! With the emotional factor, you can now go think for yourself whose side they are on. Group 2: Chinese who can speak English. This group of people typically comprised of younger generation Chinese who received their education in some institution of higher learning overseas. They have spent a couple of years overseas but in the limited time frame of 3-4 years (typically length of a bachelor degree) they were able master the English language but lack full depth understanding of the history and culture of their host country. Angry, they can only see the "malice" of the "western media" that has portrayed a differing opinion to what they have been educated to believe in back in China for the past 20 years. They see the anger of the international communities with regards to the Tibet issue but they cannot comprehend why - especially after being educated in China for 20 years that Tibet is a province of China (minus the annexation in 1950). I guess I do not have to explain further which side they are on. Now, you may ask where are all the others outside of China? They are most probably commenting on other websites. |

Error in Western Media Report about Tibet Dear Ambassador Perkin, If you don't mind then I would like you to kindly point out when and where on earth did I openly express wish or joy in Chinese genocide? I have tried to trace my own comments but nothing came up. Vaguely I do remember having said something remotely similar to what you claimed as a parody. The Chinese have consistently coughed up excuses such as cultural backwardness to support their annexation of Tibet (which has also cost the lives of millions Tibetans). For the same excuse (or you may say "reason"), I mentioned that if this theory stands true then it would make perfect sense for the USA to annex China and wipe out half of China's population. You see the difference? You claimed that you were a diplomat and I seriously question your ability to comprehend basic English statements and differentiate statements made in jest vs. straight statements. |

Error in Western Media Report about Tibet Dear Du, I am perplexed by your comment about me "masking" my name when this is obviously my name. Can you please justify your statement about me masking anything? Similarly like how I have no understanding of your background or any others like Ally who clearly stands on the side of the Chinese government, I am under no obligation to give anyone information regarding my background (not that anyone has ever asked either). Think about this: Would you go on the street to demand personal information of people who speaks to you? No, you don't. WJS's blog serve as a forum for discussion and a medium for the exchange of ideas and opinions, not personal identification of its user. I do not know if your emotions are being conjured up by mis-informed statements from Ally who do not know me any better. She made a big assumption that I am British which I am not. There seems to be a lot of speculation and fear amongst that common Chinese that the west as a whole is trying to ruin China - which they cannot sustain with indisputable evidence. It all just boils down to xenophobia. Du, I want you to understand that not being "pro-China" does not equate to being "anti-China". Indeed, China has grown so much economically and militarily in a short span of time that it has difficulty catching up socially - to appreciate different opinions to those reported by the CCTV. |

Error in Western Media Report about Tibet Dear Dunk, please throw up statistics to prove that "I" have ever killed Indians.... You would have to explain who or what you are referring to when you used the word "you" on me |
| 99 |
Error in Western Media Report about Tibet Tibet has a distinctive language, (verbal and written), a distinctive cultural identity, a distinctive spiritual way of way, a distinctive demographic, a distinctive historical background/ existence, a distinctive social system, a distinctive leader (government in exile) making it capable of making independent decision. It's true that Tibet is less economically well-off but is that up to the Chinese to judge. That's what I mean, the Chinese has put up a very poor excuse for invading Tibet...like-wise the common "If China did not attack Tibet, then India would have...." Totally bullshit to me. What the Chinese say when they put up that sort of argument equates to "If I do not rape that girl or rob that bank, someone else would do it anyway". What sort of sick and morally diminished regime would advocate that sort of mentality? |
| 98 |
Error in Western Media Report about Tibet Dear Du, look at what you have done now, taking bits of what I said and then distorting its content altogether. My original sentence was.... Economical "benefits" is not an excuse for annexing another country because if thats the cause, the USA has a good reason to "liberate" China too and wipe out half of China's population as did China when it invaded Tibet in 1950 Wow..so its not just the chinese media that loves distorting the things (also bargaining with facts along the way)...is that a Chinese thingy or are you part of the Chinese media team? Laughable. |
| 97 |
Error in Western Media Report about Tibet Jianshuo, I hope that you see how distorted Chinese media propagandize its cause too... The total number of chinese killed in the Massacre of Nanking was hype-up Taiwan (as an island, then called Formosa) WAS NEVER a part of PRC. Then get this right, there was the ROC before there ever existed a PRC. Now tell me who belongs to who? Seems like Taiwan owns China more than the other way around. Tibet was INVADED by the PRC under Mao in 1950, officially turned into a "province" incorporating other parts of China in 1959. Before that, it was a kingdom on its own, with no cultural or economical links to China. China claimed that Tibet was a poor spiritual and slave-like cultural entity before PRC under Mao stepped in..well do you see Tibet under PRC as better off? No. In fact, life has become harder for them. If they are better off, they wouldn't be protesting. Economical "benefits" is not an excuse for annexing another country because if thats the cause, the USA has a good reason to "liberate" China too and wipe out half of China's population as did China when it invaded Tibet in 1950. East Turkestan share a lot of similarity to Tibet and are severely oppressed. The kinds in "Xingjiang" has resorted to pickpocketing on the streets, skipping school and stuffs as compared to their counterparts. In fact, they had it worse than Tibet considering the fact that they had for a short period of time declared independence from China, had their own flags and national song and built economical ties with neighbouring countries, only to be crashed by China again later. For all the reasons (and many others) above, China does not deserve to host the Olympics which is a symbol of human right, perseverance, peace and unity. It is even more of a joke that it is passing around the Olympic torch with its blood-stained hand. SHAME ON YOU OLYMPICS. I SAY SHAME. |

Muslim Restaurants in Shanghai Just a very quick question Jianshuo. In most countries, Halal resturants must be certified by a relevant Halal/Muslim organisation before it can commence business as a Halal resturant. Are the resturants you have listed certified by such organisation? If it does, then I believe one of the easiest way to tell if it is Halal is to look at the certificate issued which should be easily seen on the enterance of the resturant. Correct me if I am wrong |

Plan to Go to Beijing Hi JS, welcome to Beijing. The Beijing Metro Line# 5 just opened several days ago, a line through the city from the north to the south. you can have a try. Beijing's temperature is lower than Shanghai. the highest is 18ºC, the lowest is about 10ºC. maybe there is temperature drop recently. Keep yourself warm. Wish you have a good trip. :-) |

Salary in Shanghai - Part II @surender You can go to JS's artical "Living Cost in Shanghai - Driving". It has a detailed answer to you car's question. |
| 84 |
Salary in Shanghai - Part II I think that money is decent enough to make a nice life in Shanghai. Let's make a bill. Your total money: 672,000RMB/year, that is 56000RMA/m Living: 6000RMA/m (I think 6000RMA is enough for a single to rent a very good apartment in Shanghai) Eating:3000RMA/m, that is 100RMA/m (I don't know if it is enough for you to have 3 meals a day. but it's enough for me. if your company can afford lunch, the money will be less) Transporation: 300RMA/m, 10RMA/d (If you haven't a car yet, you need to take bus or subway, and rent apartment near to your company, then 10RMA/d is enough I think) Clothes: 2000RMAm (This is not a regular consumption and also depend on what kind of clothes do you buy) Energy: 500RMA/m (that should include water, power, gas. the money can be less) ____________________ so you use 16300RMA/m for the basic necessities. and rest 39700 can be accumulated to buy a car (it also depend on what kind of car you want to buy,I don' know much about it.) Of course, this is an ideal situation, there must be many emergency using money. Is there anything missed or in wrong calculate in this bill? @JS How about your ideas? is it enough? as you're living in Shanghai! The living standard I assumed might be the standard 3 yrs ago! :-D |

Car Towing at Owner's Expense? I'm not familar with this topic. But this reminds me of a newly public law in China, Property Right Law (I don't know if I translated correctly) which has come to effective since 10/1 this year. I should say this Law is a progress to protect owner's right. But we still have much gap with those developed countries. I think maybe we have not related law yet to avoid the phenomenon in Jiaotong University like JS said. So if no law, who will obey? |
| 81 |
Some Thoughts about War and History @wonton yes, you are right. I'm thinking of how to take back my questions. LOL @YUT That can not convince me. There maybe many things behind that you and I can not reach. Let's go and see. |
| 80 |
National Holiday 2007 in Shanghai Shanghai is a so besutiful city! But ,maybe ,I will have no chance to live there! |
| 79 |
Some Thoughts about War and History @YUT really? why do you have that concern? This is the last thing I may believe that China will invade other countries. Is this what you mean? |
| 77 |
Rain Memories of New York I like Rian very much!It always gives me a piece of serenity! |
| 76 |
Some Thoughts about War and History Just come back from JS's Chinese blog, very interesting! @wonton Yes, many countries also have the "concerns" about China's military build up. But only we know it is not true. If we can not change others, the only thing we can do is to change ourselves. Make ourselves more powerful to avoid the history repeat. |
| 75 |
Shanghai Looks Like a Modern City Very happy to here this. While I doubt if it is the same situation in the station of People's Square. Too many people push you to the train, haha. I really anticapted the 2010 world expo very much, and hope I have a chance to go there then. I'm sure Shanghai will become more beautiful and modern! |
| 74 |
Some Thoughts about War and History Too sensitive and controversial topic. We don't like wars in the peaceful time, especially wars interfering other country's affairs. All the peoples are victims. As for Japanese war, I can say something. Chinese and Japanese politics analyst had a big discussion about sino-Japan relations on the phoenix TV. I watched it and don't feel optimistic about Japanese attitude to that history. 70% or even higher Japanese people don't believe Japan has ever invaded China.(The statistic is surveyed by Japan not China). And there are still many chemical weapons left in China during WWII, but Japan government would do nothing about it. So in my opinion, as time goes by, this history will be forgotten gradually by Japanese. But should never be forgotten by our Chinese. Of course we can forgive, but it depends. depend on Japan's attitude. While it seemed Japan would not like give us the chance to forgive them. They'd like to burden the guilt forever. Too heavy topic, is there any meaning we discuss it here? if any solecism or ignorance, please correct me. Thank u! |
| 72 |
Don't Leave, AussiePB It's a pity for me missing this hot discussion. Although I don't know what it is about yet. I'll dig it out. |

Foreign Language Only Signs? Starbucks is just an example that i used. I don't frequent it and I don't like it either. |
| 67 |
Foreign Language Only Signs? Yeah I agree with Caroll and Karen. Afterall, these *American (+++ other national ) companies/ businesses are in China and should respect the local population by putting up signs the locals can read. I wouldn't like to have foreigners coming to my country, set up businesses and put up signs that no one but themselves can read. Diversity is one thing, respecting others is another. There has to be a bridge somehow and language is that bridge. PS: I support the idea of putting up signs in Chinese but that doesn't mean changing the name altogether into Chinese. Take for instance "Starbucks". I think it is appropriate for Starbucks to remain being called Starbucks and not "Sing-Ba-Ke". They could put up a sign specifying it's a cafe in Chinese and have Chinese translation for the menu. |

Chinese Characters To Passby: Thank you for your kind explaination but I don't get what you are trying to say in point 2. What is Yi Jing? Then the mathematical part is completely confusing to me. what is 2^3*2^3? then what about the computer and all...can you make it simplier? I also don't understand what is "yin" and what is "yang". Isn't "yin" the word of the dead in toism and "yang" the world of the living? Yeah you are right. I was writing 4 as 4 horizontal strokes, 5 as 5 horizontal strokes and 6 as.....etc for months when I first learn chinese. |

Shanghainese Girl Marrying Foreigners To AussiePB: Anyway enjoy your baby. (That's supposed to be taken as a congrtulation/ well wishes and nothing racist.) |
| 61 |
Shanghainese Girl Marrying Foreigners AussiePB: I also have no wish to keep going on about this topic and neither did I say that racism did not exist either in Singapore or Australia. Your very "correct" interpretation of my words have made me decided to "retaliate" to what you have said which is why we are talking about this issue now. In terms of your definition of racism which I deeply appreciate, I want to draw your attention to that fact that race is the crux of racism and on which people formed an idea or discriminatory beliefs on. Here, I mentioned nothing about any race being inferior or superior to another - I have no idea how you concluded that I feel Singaporeans are superior. The words "white"/ "yellow" and "non-whites" were in inverted commas because I obviously don't agree with the usage of these words as they were coined. I did not invented them and these were words I see in Australian textbooks. Anyway, before you started harping on I am now "attacking" Australia, I wish to state first of all I see no colour and again I have had chinese exs and my best friend was born in China. Personally I hate that word 'coloured" more than anyone because I am "coloured" from having Asian (South/ Southeast/ East) and European (West and South) blood. Next, you don't know my background and if you want to focus on the issue of race here then unfortunately (or perhaps fortunately) I am part Chinese and I don't hate myself. Now lets review what you have said in your first posting that made me reacted the way I did. In your post on the 23 of June at 5.37PM you said: "Well... I was worried about racism - never did I realize how racist the society I now live in is... every day as we move about Singapore, the assumption is made by many people that my wife is Singapore Chinese - this brings stares, sneers and even outright obvious hatred toward me. Why?? I live in this country because I was invited - there were no people with the skills, talent, education and experience to do the job I do. So I am here to help this country - how can people be so narrow-minded??" Do I have to further explain why I think you are more racist than I am now? Huh? You have made EXTREMMELY derogarative comments about the place I was born in. You called my society a "racist society", "I was invited to work here" (you made yourself sound like a VIP, superiority huh??) and how "they have no talent and skills" (damm right!) Last of all, I'm sure you remember calling us "narrow-minded" and "ought to be embarrassed" when I did not make any value judgement about you despite the fact that I was assumed I speak no English and therefore is a stupid asshole from Asia at Australia's oldest university. Actions speak louder than words and your words haven't been kind from start so I wonder how "thou shalt love thy neighbour" in such a situation! PS: The above is my post too. |

Shanghainese Girl Marrying Foreigners AussiePB: Have you ever wondered why there was a "White Australia" and Pauline Hanson and One Nation??? And why are all Asians considered "Chinese" in Australia (they automatically assume you are chinese if you are "yellow") and why aren't Indians/ Sri Lankans etc. considered Asians in the west? Who are the ones putting people into categories based on skin colour? Why are some of the "non-whites" who speak perfect English being discriminated in Australia because they (whites) don't think they can speak English? My best friend has been in Australia since she was 2 and never mind tha fact that she scored full marks for her 4 unit English at HSC, she is still constantly being asked if she "understands English" at school and outside. This is a bit off the track but I just want you to know that Australia is not a racism-free country so don't give me crap. Should I label you a racist because of the many racist Australians I have met? I don't think so because you are you and I don't know you. I didn't label you and who gave you the right to label me? |

Shanghainese Girl Marrying Foreigners AussieBP: Oh and now you are trying to crash me with your arborigine heritage and accuse me being racist because I mentioned the stolen generation? I don't understand how I insulted "your heritage" by the mere mention of the stolen generation?? If there is anyone who insulted you then your first target is John Howard and the rest of the people in parliament who refuse to return the rights of the land to the aborigines Now, now why are you so sensitive to the German's role in WW2. I did not mention anything about WW2 and FOI, I have NEVER EVER felt whatever that has happened in the WW2 has anything to do with Germany and Japan. Don't put words in my mouth! Lastly, when did I stereotype anyone? If I did then I would very well steer myself clear of all Chinese but no my one of my very best friend is from China Dalian and the other from Fiji. My last BF was born in China and Shanghai - the place you claimed me to be racist against. PS: Check up the meaning of racism bah.... I am too in love with some aspect of china and its place to be called a racist. The real racist here..hem...can you explain why some chinese students come to australia and called "white people" white ghost and people with more tan skin "hei gui". I have many examples regarding that...i'm sure your chinese wife must have told you how she hated Indians? If shes not like that then God bless... |

Shanghainese Girl Marrying Foreigners To Jiang and AussiePB: First of all I am not a racist. I have had chinese boyfriends and ironically my last boyfriend was a China-Shanghai born. People in Japan/ HK/ Singapore/ USA/ Australia (for USA and Aust, I only mean the Asian population because non-Asians cannot tell Asians apart) where I have lived in were also more "ok" with the chinese men from SH as opposed to the SH girls. Tell me why????? At Sydney University where I go to, there are so many Shanghai women prostituting themselves for free as long as you are white or other Asians (non-chinese)!! I ask 3 girls from Shanghai why they like whites and Japanese so much and they told me this, "in china, it is a privilege to date these people and people respect you if your husband is non-chinese". One of those girls even went as far to tell me how HER MOTHER told her "since you are going overseas and leaving China, you must leave for good, you must marry well, you MUST DEFINITELY marry into a rich family ("jia ru hao men") and best of all marry a foreigner who is rich so we can all migrate".... I nearly faint when I heard that.....then she finished off our conversation with "zai zhong guo, sheng nu er shi bu kun ben de" ("in china its never poor business if you bear daughters" |
| 55 |
Shanghainese Girl Marrying Foreigners Get over this AussiePB, if you are so happy with your wife then just let it be...why are you wailing and complaining so much? I am Singaporean and matter of factly people in Singapore can tell China Chinese apart from the Singapore Chinese. It is very easy to differentiate them really (if you are a local.... like how Japanese can very easily tell Koreans/ Chinese apart from Japanese but not Australians like you) and people look at you NOT because they assume she is a Singaporean but perhaps more because she is from China and if you really are in Singapore then you know the reputation of China's women. I'm sure you have heard of geylang, study mama, "chinese overseas student" and massage parlour? I don't want to stereotype but my great-granparents' marriage were broken by a women from China, the same goes from my uncle's marriage and then my godparents'... Tell me why are there so many China women who are marrying foreign guys they have only met a couple of times or whom they have known for less than a year? Why are them marrying guys more than 2 times their age? I don't believe it is love but then of course you can choose to believe otherwise. You have chosen to love a Shanghai women but similarly others have choosen NOT to love them so thats quite fair really. Get over this topic. If you want to harp on this one then I'm going to start on the stolen generation of Australia. |

Name of the Baby - Part II I agree with Jennifer. Till now I still don't know what "na yan" means and I assume thats how its should be pronounced? It sounds heavy and serious and hard to be pronounced by non-chinese. Yi Fan is way more classy than le fan (as it most probably will end up being pronounced as "le1 fan1" (happy upside down)...... |

Pictures of my Newly-Born Baby Wow! Your baby is so beautiful. He looks more like you than Wendy and he looks big for his age (7 days) but that could be the picture. How many kilos was him at birth? And what is your baby's name? He's so sweet ;-) Congratulations Elaine |

Seoul Changes Chinese Name Hi Jet, Just to clear your doubt.... YES I am Sinagporean but I still don't understand how that has got anything to do with the illustration that me and my friend drew upon (the issue regarding names)? In this case, I am talking about the basic respect for someone's name so whether they are living in Singapore or Australia doesn't change anything coz they are ONLY GUESTS in people's place. If I am in China then yes, I may potentially use/make/come up with a Chinese name if appropriate just to make their lives easier (on the condition that it sounds anything similar to what my name originally means). However, that shouldn't be the case if they are living elsewhere, isn't it? Why should anyone else go out of their way to make life easier for people from China? If they don't speak English then just keep their foot out of English-speaking countries. If they don't speak Japanese then keep their foot out of Japan. Simple as that. Look, I don't want to make anything sound personal. I am not some bigot out there who wants any attention to me or my friend's name. All I was trying to say is that name is a symbol of a person, so respect it. The Koreans are not wrong to demand what they want the Chinese to call them. It is their name. It is their right. It is their choice, not the Chinese! Say for example, your name is "Jet". Your parents gave you that name when you were born. Would you want to be called "Aeroplane" or "Helicopter" or even "Hot-air-balloon"? Would your parents want you to be called something they didn't name you? I'm sure they don't. And this remains the same irregardless of whether you are in Singapore or China. When I was in Japan, I didn't make up a Japanese name for myself because any such name wouldn't be me anymore. This is the same for "Seoul". By any other name, "Seoul" just wouldn't be "Seoul" anymore. The same way "Aeroplane" doesn't refer to you nor does E-ling refer to me. PS: Please keep to the topic. We are talking about Soeul here. Peace |

Seoul Changes Chinese Name Living in China???? Hell no................ I'm talking about people from china who lives overseas (in this context, its Australia). Well...... I asked my friend about his name and he confirmed its "Wu-lio" and not "Hu-lio". Guess he knows his name much better than you??? |
| 50 |
Seoul Changes Chinese Name Im referring to chinese as in people from china mainland not ABC or other foreign born chinese (as a request from my frenz..) haha.. |
| 49 |
Seoul Changes Chinese Name Respecting the name of a person is basic courtesy. I dont speak Spanish but I know the Spanish guy who sits beside me in class is called "wu...lio" and not "ju...lio" (Julio). Likewise, I dont pronounce the name of a chinese classmate called Meng An as a misspelt "Meagan"? Its time for Chinese to learn basic mannars |
| 48 |
Seoul Changes Chinese Name I'll go along with a noticable few (not all) that inflated their huge egos to mask a poor 'inferiority complex'. Especially, the ones that recently made a little moolah & trying ever so desperate to look "磨登". As for the correct pronounciation of your name, hmm, maybe they have a poor grasp of the Queen's English? ;-) ... On the lighter side, you could also insist on using your chinese given name for those that have trouble. Posted by: Jet So on April 3, 2007 03:02 PM --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- why should I gave myself a chinese name just to please the chinese???? They are the guest in my country so they should learn to speak whatever I speak. period |
| 47 |
Seoul Changes Chinese Name get over it...its is people's choice. It is high time for all chinese in china to reflect on their own inferior complex which is generating such STRONG NEGATIVE emotions... everyone has the RIGHT to be called what they are called. Just to illustrate my point, i have simple example here..I am called "Elaine" and I have an issue with chinese people calling me "E-ling" which is just so wrong.... name is a symbol of a person...uit is what my parents wants to give their child(conversely what people in korean wants to give their country)...if you can't respect taht then sorry..china shalle d be called chink-land |

I am not a Big Fan of Hate - Part II Hey we totally changed the topic of this discussion thread... lets bring it back to history.... and wars.... |
| 42 |
I am not a Big Fan of Hate - Part II OK. I apologise for the above comment regarding SH girls. But the first SH girl I met in Singapore divorced her husband to marry a local..and guess what? That man was married so she made him divorce his wife by claiming she was pregnant and broke up 2 families in the process. The first SH girl I met in USA was my cousin's neighbour, same story as above. The first SH girl I met in Japan was a prostitute. Full stop. The first SH girl I met in Sydney told me she is willing to go to bed with ANY foreign men because HER MOM told her to do that...that the ONLY reason why they sent her abroard for an overseas education is for her to KNOW foreign men so she can MARRY up... She's my classmate at a med school. The ones i HK in HK when I was an exchanged student there, home-wreckers...prostitute... and thats it. I am not saying all SH girls are like that. I am certain NOT everyone is like that (4 millions of them in SH) but tell me how can I not think of them as home wreckers or cheap slut when you keep bumping into people like that? I don't want to argue..and I don't want to stereotypes either... its might be interesting for you to know this is how my other chinese friends (from other parts of china) think of them as well... its not a foreign thing.... the locals think that way too YAWN...nuff said... |
| 41 |
I am not a Big Fan of Hate - Part II Hi Iloveyoutoo, "On the other hand, do not to be so critical on those Shanghainese girls. The fact is most shanghainese were not born there. They are migrants. They came from all over the place. It is the environment (or you can call it culture) nurtured them to have those distinctive characteristics that are unique to Shanghainese. However, that uniqueness is not limited to Shanghainese girls if we put aside the physiological difference between men and women. Shanghainese Men are exactly the same!" It is true that Shanghainese are people from neighbourring provinces many generations back but this is not the case for those below 50 years of age (since most were born in SH-> post-WWII). And they are the ones who claim themselves to be different as a group to such an extent that you thought they are non-Chinese... I am not trying to be critical, just objective. At least this is what I observed in SH girls as opposed to other China girls... that is, they generally prefer money to love. Maybe someone can come can change my opinon but until I finally met another SH girl who doesn't sleep around for the sake of a passport... things are not going to change much. "Stop hoping that you will get a response from certain individuals about their views on your question(s). Chances are that he is not able to offer anything more then others have already said. Besides who want to criticize his/her own characters. You won’t do that neither." I'm gave hoping to get response from WJS but I think he's certainly more liberal than what you thought he was. BTW, he doesn't have to criticize anyone... Germany apologised for its atrocities on Jews after the WW but i don't think thats a criticism, its an address to whatever wrongs that need to be address... and WJS's not Shanghainese anyway... Yawn... its 9am here and I haven't had much of a sleep...awwwwwwwww exam at 11am..... sobs..... |

I am not a Big Fan of Hate - Part II Hi Frenchy, If you can read some chinese then I would recommend you to visit this website www.chinaren.com of which I dub "weird news" webpage. Every post on this website is almost hilarious to me, especially the BBS. Apparently, this is the most popular BBS in China and at least 90% of the local undergrads surf this website on a day to day basis. You don't have to take the content seriously since 99% of them are senseless, if not ridiculous, and from it you would have a rough idea of how much Chinese and Japanese people hate each other. Just a note of caution, the Chinese people on that website hate just about everyone who is non-Chinese so you need not take it to heart if they are anti-French as well. I take it with a pinch of salt nowadays whenever I read postings on how pretentious Britons are, how loud Germans are, how masochistic Americans are, how cruel Japanese are, as well as how smelly Frenchs are (assuming this is why France is famous for its perfumery)... and the list goes on. If you decide to have a look at it, just take it as a joke and laugh it off (though you may be surprised that these are people at universities both in China and overseas). Elaine |
| 39 |
I am not a Big Fan of Hate - Part II Hey Frenchy, I am Singaporean. See my post above. LOLx :) "I am somewhere in between as I am Southeast Asian (Singapore-born) and come from a complex blood line of French, Portuguese, Taiwanese, Peranakan and Javanese/ Malay lineage. Race is not an issue with me as you can see. I only consider myself as Singaporean" And regarding Japanese... I always have this impression that jap guys are more responsible to their family though no doubt a "MCP" hahaha.... Elaine |
| 38 |
I am not a Big Fan of Hate - Part II To be honest, most of my friends had advised me NOT to go out with a Chinese partly because of the hierachy thingy. In a typical Chinese family, you as a daughter-in-law is NOT considered part of the family. So the Dad is right up at the top, followed by mom, then the son, followed by funny people that pops out of nowhere such as the "auties", "uncles" and "cousins" and then last of all, you. In my relationship with my ex, I was seen as the threat to the mom because she no longer holds any control in the son's life. To her, I had caused her position in my ex's heart to sway....and this doesn't even make sense to me. Can't she go and bother her husband instead? My ex is already 25.......not 15....... |
| 37 |
I am not a Big Fan of Hate - Part II To Frenchy, Hands up, legs up in support LOL...hahha..I can't agree more with you. This is one of the main reasons why I had some much problems with my ex's parents and his relatives. The "social undevelopments" are probably the most significant factors that causes foreign womens to find Chinese men repulsive. I can't agree more with the spitting and long finger nails, ear digging, toe scratching and stuff. Most foreigners wouldn't have an much an issue with Chinese from HK. And yessss....I can't stand the way Chinese men in China listens to their Mama all the time... it is absolutely disgusting... things are slowly changing...but the "tradition of listening to parents" which they call 'filial piety" is going to take a long while to change. When I said i wanna move out with my ex or put his mom in a nursing home in Shanghai (since she doesn't like western countries and can only speak Shanghainese) when she gets old, it evoked exggerated emotions from his family side. -_-? |
| 36 |
Jet Lag? Finally Found Out the Cure I am also experiencing the same effect of "jet lag" by buring the midnight oil during exam period. I can't sleep at night and feel sleepy during daytime :( |
| 35 |
I am not a Big Fan of Hate - Part II Oooh....surprise! surprise! I thought you were born and bred in America... Are you shanghainese? |
| 34 |
I am not a Big Fan of Hate - Part II Narh... Ben you are an ABC so you probably are more American than Chinese... My BF don't have an issue with me being non-chinese.....its the parents. Am still waiting for Jianshuo to answer my above questions on Foreign man- chinese women (and vice versa) relationships trend in China..hahah....wanted to know how people in china think of such relationships..and he always have opinons so different from the general population in china... |
| 33 |
I am not a Big Fan of Hate - Part II Haha...Ben, you are chinese right? Would your parents interfer if you decide to marry a non-chinese women? |
| 32 |
I am not a Big Fan of Hate - Part II "The trade embargo with Japan by US and British was a result of conflict of the colonial interest at Indo-Chine (now known as Vietnam+Cambodia+Loas) at the end of the Battle of France which occurred at summer 1940." "Indo-China" is just a geographical name for countries in South East Asia which are directly adjacent to China, instead of the islands outlaying in the SE-Asia sea and pacific such as Phillipines, Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia. So countries like Burma, Laos, Vietnam and even Thailand can be considered to be "Indo-China" since these are non-island countries attached to mainland Asia (I guess most westerners back then thought of Asia as in China as if Asia and China is one entity; same way most people in Asia thought all westerns speak English... So get past stereotypes :p). The term "Indo-China" is STRICTLY GEOGRAPHICAL, not historical so it has nothing to do with China. There were NOT colonised/ annexed by China. Another example would be "Indo-Europe" which is an Asian country called India in the Asia subcontinent. |
| 31 |
I am not a Big Fan of Hate - Part II ILoveYouToo, I suppose you thought I was in China when you said "get out of here" and not get out of this discussion?). Anyway, I am not in China. My problem is NOT being with a Chinese guy, it's with Chinese-in-laws! By the way, there are nice Chinese people (man) too but the cultural differnces make it harder for cross-cultural relationships to work out, especially if the parents are there to make things worse. PS: The argument on history is getting too heated.... Elaine |
| 30 |
I am not a Big Fan of Hate - Part II Have a good rest Jian Shuo. Good night ^_^ |
| 29 |
I am not a Big Fan of Hate - Part II Where is Jian Shuo?? I am waiting for him to express his views...LOL ;p |
| 28 |
I am not a Big Fan of Hate - Part II Hi Frenchy, Nope. my ex is a China-born. He came to Australia when he was 10 so I can pretty much see the differnces between his and his parents' thinking. I am also not "western" nor "asian" by the normal/ usual standard. I am somewhere in between as I am Southeast Asian (Singapore-born) and come from a complex blood line of French, Portuguese, Taiwanese, Peranakan and Javanese/ Malay lineage. Race is not an issue with me as you can see. I only consider myself as Singaporean. Anyway, lets get back to the topic on cross-cultural couples. I do agree with you that China people (Note: I refrain from using words like "chinese" because I want to distingusih Taiwanese, HongKongers and foreign-born-Chinese from China-born-Chinese as each of these group of people tend to think very differently from one another). Personally, I think China may be developing economically but not socially. They still follow a sort of white-yellow-brown-black skin colour hierachy and believe that "blacks are slaves". Chinese (China people) tend to be very critcal and unforgiving of others. Hence, they frown on "their" women being seen with "Black chimps". Very stereotypical. Someone proposed that there are fewer foreign women-chinese men couples because there are more foreign men than foreign women in China but that doesn't answer why a Chinese man does the country proud when he marries a foreign women and not the other way round (Chinese look down on China girls who married foreigners). PS: In Australia, I know this girl who told me outright that her only "goal' in life is to "marry up" and hence her family pooled together all their family fortune to send her overseas so she can meet "rich men" (foreign males). She considers it disgraceful if she doesn't end up marrying a foreigner after being overseas for so many years and has confessed that she has slept with dozens of foreign "old man". Right now, she is comemplating marrying another China born because he is getting his Aussie PR in another 2 months time. Her plan? Marry this guy for 2 years so she can become a PR and then divorce him. And guess what? She is from Shanghai... Recently, I met another 2 such girls..and they are all Shanghainess.... is that a coincidence or what? Elaine |
| 27 |
I am not a Big Fan of Hate - Part II Hi Stephan and Frenchy, Well, I don't quite get what you guys are saying from the web-link and other postings. I know for certain that women from China are flocking into the arms of foreign men because of money. I do not have any doubt about that. What I wanted to know is whether Chinese men are aware of this and if the people in China really think/ believe there is true love between such couples. My other question was regarding the difference between Chinese men with foreign women as opposed to Chinese women with foreign men. I don't see as many Chinese men-foreign women couples in comparism to their female counterparts and it almost seems like there is a common belief/ myth that "Chinese men do China proud by marrying foreign women, and Chinese who marry foreign men are a disgrace to China". I am interested because my ex BF is a Chinese and we broke up because of his parents' belief (his parents hold very "traditional" stereotypes of non-Chinese people depending on where you are from). Even though his parents kept belittling their 27-year-old Chinese neighbour who divorced her husband in China to marry a white, they were absolutely impressed that my ex were together with me (though we eventualy spilt up due to cultural differences). This is something I cannot understand. Is it a reflection of China people's inferior complex or what? My ex is still trying to make our relationship work out but the parents are also trying just as hard to match-make him with the girls from Shanghai (where he was born in). These girls have never met my ex before but just the simple fact of him holding an Aussie passport is enough to make them take the risk in marrying a stranger. Weird!!! PS: Sorry WJS to turn your blog into something so private and totally unrelated to your topic. Elaine |
| 26 |
I am not a Big Fan of Hate - Part II Thanks Frenchy for correcting me about Karl Marx..but there you go, for something that originated in the west, it wasn't very well recieved at all (proving not "western things are good --> same for the men these women marry) Instead of hearing the view points of foreigners here ( which I already know coz i am also foreign) can any Chinese men explain this phenomenon to me? Why? Why? Why? Especially since this "social trend" seems to be more Shanghai than any other parts of China. Don't give me the same crap that this is because Shanghai womens are more "open" and "westernised"... we all know that is not true....I don't see how HK is any less westernised than Shanghai (and HK is also culturally chinese). I lived in Hk for 1 year between 1996-1997 so I know... Japan is not like that either, nor is Korea... its always Shanghai. So why? Because if it is for money then Beijing women, Canton women, Nanking women etc should all be the same (if not more foreign-men-chasing because they are poorer)? So agian, why Shanghai women? |
| 25 |
I am not a Big Fan of Hate - Part II Another question for you Jianshuo though it might spark off a lot of hot debates (both positive and negative). Why are there so many women in China who are dying to marry foreigners (mostly westerners but also Asians from developed countries like Japan, Singapore, Taiwan ...you can't call HK a country but yeah, HK as well? I don't see as many Chinese man marrying foreign women. It is a "social trend" or real love? Most of these women are in their early 20s while their "partner" are at least in their 40s (from observations, for course I don't know their exact age). Would like to hear your views on this. |
| 24 |
I am not a Big Fan of Hate - Part II Hi Frenchy, you just reminded me that Marx was a French wasn't he? And he was the one who first proposed Socialism yet French are not stupid enough to put his theory into practice. We all have a choice in deciding what is right/ wrong, smart or stupid. And it's not disgraceful to admit one's wrong in order to learn from experience (in this case, history). What is disgraceful is to deny that you are wrong (again, in this case, deny history) that we (as a human race) failed altogether in achieving peace. I don't totally agree with this saying but I thought it is interesting: Here it goes... "A fool learns from experience while a genius learns from others' experiences" PS: Wonders what would a person who never learn be called? Retard, idiot??? Regards, Elaine |
| 23 |
Photo: Dog under Sunshine Yup. I don't get it either... i don't know if this is a China or Shanghai thing but my ex BF's mom do it all the time..taking their pillows, clothes and blanket/ comforter out into the courtyard for "sun-ing". The reason (according to her) is because that will "kill the germs/ bacteria". I am doing medicine and there is absolutely no logic in this. If anything, it only makes the linen dirtier. She doesn't wash them because "it is not good".... I get screamed at whenever I close my door when the family starts smoking in the corridor (they think it will "dirty" the living room and their own bedroom and it sucks because my room is the only room along the corridor). The reason, it causes my room to stink due to the lack of air circulation????? I seriously think tehre is something wrong with the brains of Shnaghainese....they why smoke? So glad JS isn't Shanghainese...coz these people have a very bad reputation not only in China but also overseas (unfortunately most foreigners can't tell the difference). |
| 22 |
I am not a Big Fan of Hate - Part II Hi Jianshuo, Since you mentioned Hitler, can you tell me what you and the general population in China think of Mao? As far as I am concerned, he is the biggest joke in modern China's history. And it amazes me that he is still being highly revered today as a great hero after all the hedious crimes he commited against humanity. In my honest opinon, this guy is worst than Hitler. Do most Chinese realy know what this guy had done? Or what? Regards, Elaine |
| 21 |
Why I Don't Have an English Name Isn't it better to be called what you are? Most of my Chinese classmates gave themselves funny names like Summer, Apple, Rainy, Stone and Dolphine when they came to Australia becase they presume it would make them stand out (for all the wrong reasons I think) since no one else uses it (we all know why).... and this is something I cannot comprehend. As far as I can remember, it is always the China kids who got themsleves into such trouble. And then there are also some Hong Kong kids who gave themselves names like Yuki, Yoko (ND: These are Japanese names even though they call it "English" names) and other weird names like Zata and such (Alien names that reminds you of Star Wars or Godzilla) because it makes them stand out... but at least it's not as bad as having a class full of fruit-named kids or weather-named kids. I can just imagine the look on the poor English teacher's face when these kids first enrol for language classes. |

Salary in Shanghai - Part II Hi Rocker, I don't know if this is going to help much but I believe you shoud expect at least SGD 10 000 per month (basic) plus medical insurance, car and accomodation. If none of these "perks" are going to be there, then you should look at a figure between SGD 13000 to 16000 to make up for it. This is equivalent to what Georgie suggested above and that's what an expat usually gets. You got to beware that some Chinese firms treat expat Asians as second-class expats and may give you what local gets instead. If that is the case then I suggest you to just drop the offer. It is not worth it, really. My dad was posted to work in Shanghai for 2 years between 1997-1999 as a business development personel (I cannot remember exactly what his position was called, but he's an GM at the same MNC today) and his salary at that time was around USD 20 000 plus insurance, car, accomadation and many other "perks' that REAL expats usually get (minus those so-called "language teacher" , "tutors" etc). So now, you should have a rough idea of how much you should bargain for. Good luck :p Elaine |

Who is Chinabounder Yes. I totally agree that China and its people has some sort of weird mob mentality that if someone says this or that and I don't join in, then I must be wrong. It doesn't matter if they have a different opinion coz difference in China is not an asset but a liability. That ChinaBounder guy has all his rights to express what he does in his own time in his own privacy, this doesn't concern anyone but himself and his girlfriend. A blog is an "online diary" and it's not meant for the public so what gives the Chinese professor and others the rights to even criticize him? Those who read his blog have already tramped on his privacy for God's sake. BTW, I do have some insights that privacy means nothing to an average Chinese in China. Just last year, a 17 years old girl from Singapore was hunt down by Chinese netizens coz of her "not so positive" remarks about China. This girl was in China as an exchange student for one semester and so she set up a blog in order to communicate with her family and friends back in Singapore and of course to also let those who have not been to China know how it feels like to be in China (ie. thru her own experiences there). And then somehow her Chinese classmates came to know about her blog and began their own "revenge" for the sake for "cultural intergrity" (dunno what that means). She was "severely criticize" for using "negative words" such as "hardworking nerds who only know how to follow the crowds" and "vomit things back to lecturers during exams" to describe Chinese students. The Chinese also can't stand how she described Chinese as backwards in dressing and "vain" (competing each other to see who has got the latest mobiles, clothes etc all the time). This girl later received death and rape threats not only from her classmates but from people throughout the whole of China coz her blog was later publicised by one bloke on Sohu (a very popular Chinese website). She was forced to make a public apology on national newspaper and shut down her blog (this is not even a Chinese blog and it's not written in Chinese either). Just for your information, this girl later concluded her studies/ exchang program in China due to the increased tension and the concerns her parents + her school (Singapore) had regarding her safety. Within a month's time, all the other Singaporean exchange students and some from other countries (such as USA, Australia and Japan etc) all concluded her studies under the same international student exchange program to go back to their home country largely due to this incident. One student from the USA later stated that she decided to go back to her country only 2 months into the program as she had also done the same thing (wrote about China in her MSN space and it's not exactly positive like how China would like it to be...) She also bellieve that nearly everyone like herself under the exchange program would have wrote about China on their own blog if they have one and most wouldn't be positive or at least overwhelmingly positive. So what does that tells you? Isn't it weird that China expects the world to think it is perfect when it clearly isn't perfect? The only way you can make it perfect is to keep anything foreign from entering China and then take a "GREAT LEA BACKWARDS INTO THE COMMUNIST ERA". |

Discrimination Against Foreigners in Shanghai? I am aghast and angry NOT because China didnt treat me like one of its kind but rather because it treated me as if I am one of them. I dont need to be seen as something I am NOT! When I am overseas, I say I am an Aisan, thats right by all sense but it wouldnt be right to say I am Chinese coz I am not. An Indian is an Asian hey but the chinks dun think so. The Americans would refer to "Asians" only if they are "yellow" and that is just as ignorant as the people in China. Its like saying "you are a men" to someone who really is a women!! |

Three Meetups in a Day Feel honoured that I was listed on the third meetup. It's my first time to know Wangjianshuo, who is definitely a clever and hospitable guy with many interesting psych games (though i am shamefully gave a stupid answer for the number test) To be summed up, it's very very nice to meet him through Hengge and Michael. P.S, 1. pls still consider my application to be your gardener assistant;) 2. I have taken your request regarding.....so welcome to IKEA store and remember to contact me before you visit. |

Shanghai Public Transportation Card China's Public Transportation Card stole this concept from Singapore's Mass Rapid Transport who innovated the Ez-Link card in 1990. The earlier version of Ez-Link card, a flimsy magnetic card called MRT card was used between 1984 to 1990 until Ez-Link came along. |

Discrimination Against Foreigners in Shanghai? Hi Daniel, I do pity you that you have NO REAL IDENTITY to call your own. I dont understand why you would call yourself an "ABC" when it is a term used by others to degrade people like you? To me, you are either American or chinese.....so what are you? Dont tell me you are both. Or maybe you need more time to figure that out? God bless Elaine |

Luoyang Tour - Day 1 Hi, I believe the the so called "technology" that everyone seems to be talking about was pioneered in Singapore itself and not korea. Since HDBs are the main form of lodging for the locals and are govt funded, air-cons are considered a luxury and not a neccessity which the govt are obliged to provide for the residents of such apartments. They may be "ugly" for some but the end of the day please note that you can buy a nicer apartment at 300% (min) the price of a HDB for a private apartment. *Ouch Btw, what matters if the inside and not the facade. Chinese tend to overrate facade. A facade is a facade....at the end of the day you buy a unit in a building, not the wall of the building... PS: Newer HBDs (built after 1995) in Singapore have A/C ledge hidden away in some obscure spots for the compressors...but does it really matter??? |

Discrimination Against Foreigners in Shanghai? Jack, you can conveniently dismiss my views because you are clearly chinese but it is insulting to me because I am Singaporean and I see myself as a Singaporean only. I have no relatives in China, I know nothing about china, my whole family has been here since the 17th century and unknown to the Chinese ppl in china, WE have our own beliefs and lifestyle which China ASSUME to be similar to theirs. Next we are a multi-racial country unlike china yet I hate the chinky coming up to me and call my fellow countrymen "foreigners" whilst they are the REAL foreigner on our soil. How dare the chinks?? Like I have mentioned, I am part French, part Portugese, part Dutch, part Taiwanese, part Javanese, part Malay and none of the other "race" do that to me except the chinks....I donno how you see it but i take it as an insult when they try to rob me of my REAL identity as a |
