12 The Blind Men and The Elephant

Nice post...thanks for furthering greater mutual understanding among the people of the world...more important than ever before. I couldn't figure out why I like this blog so much, now I do! Seek first to understand, then to be understood (from Covey I think)...

11 Shanghai is Coooold

Well, I'm proud to be an American! I personally think Bush and the Republicans have made some terrible mistakes with Iraq and the global war against terrorism, especially with its unilateral policies. But I'm happy that citizens have voted the Republicans out of office, and begun the process of holding Bush, Rumsfeld, Abizaid, etc. accountable for these mistakes, and hopefully charting a better course for the future. I guess I'd be happy to be an American in my next life too...:)

10 Jian Shuo Visits San Jose (Again)

Jian Shuo,

Have a good trip. You probably don't have any free time when you are here, but I'm happy to meet up again on last minute notice (in China style) if you do. A local restaurant review site I like is www.jatbar.com. They don't do a great job with Chinese food, but they do with most other foods. Email me if you want any specific restaurant recommendations.

China-watch, I think JS would acknowledge that his life is far from a "common Chinese life." BTW I'm personally a bigger fan of Alexis DeTocqueville (who wrote about the French Revolution) than Lenin...

8 I am an ENFP

Thanks for sharing! Did the profile help explain what people you get along with and which ones you don't? And also what people have complementary strengths to yours?

I am an INTP. Anyone else know their MBTI profile?

5 My Personality Test

WJS, so what type are you? I am INTJ, apparently common among lawyers and consultants! OK if you can't share that info. :)

4 My Personality Test

Thanks. I have done numerous personality tests like this (in the US the Myers-Briggs is popular, which I did when I was in business school) and sometimes there are some useful insights into your personality and management style. The question is always: so what? and what do you do with it?

Thanks also for the advice on the hosting. Sounds like some US hosting firms have figured out how to provide fast enough access to sites for the Chinese blogosphere.

3 My Personality Test

Do you have a link to the personality assessment? (not really a "test", since you cannot fail it!).

You may not like to make plans ahead for the weekend, but running a blog requires a lot of organization, doesn't it?

Forgive me if this is way off topic, but I've had a hard time finding info on the best web hosting provider and blog platform for blogs that are intended for both readers inside China and also outside China. Can you offer advice on this, or at least your own case study? Which web hosting provider do you have? The site seems pretty fast from the US. Is your Chinese blog on the same hosting provider? Thanks in advance!

2 7 Tips to Travel to China This Quarter

Some great tips! I'm not a China travel expert, but have some suggestions:

Tip #9: Ask a friend to buy you a prepaid mobile phone card from China Mobile/China Unicom. Bring your own GSM tri-band mobile phone (you may have to have it "unlocked" before you come), and pop the SIM chip into your phone. I find it incredibly important to have a mobile phone so you can schedule meetings, make dinner plans, etc. Everything is last-minute and fast-paced in China, you want to be reachable on your trip. (Also, if you have a Blackberry, I have found GPRS Blackberry support GREAT in China, just sign up for an international plan before you leave).

Tip #10: Ask a friend to buy a IP Phone Card. International calls are very expensive in China. It seems like IP Phone Card is the cheapest way to go. (Maybe WJS has some more tips).

Tip #11: Bring ATM cards, ideally on multiple networks. My main US bank account is on STAR/PLUS network but not on MAESTRO/CIRRUS network. I was stuck at the Hangzhou airport once with no cash and a useless ATM card...lucky I could get cash advance from my MasterCard! In my experience, Bank of China is on MAESTRO (the symbol that looks like MasterCard). Maybe someone can survey the big ATM networks and tell us travellers which ATM networks are most useful...

Tip #12: Carry more cash than you are used to. In the US, I carry very little cash because I use credit cards all the time. In China, everyone carries a ton of cash and there is a good reason for it. So get a money belt, don't let yourself be pickpocketed, but also don't run out of money because you assume that ATMs are everywhere and credit cards are accepted everywhere.
