Stock Market Big Drop Scribe, it's the other way around. If the option to delete is available then they have NOT blocked you. The converse is not true. |

More Accidents in 2008 The word insecurity would be better. Terror will be understood as terrorism. |

Different Views of the Same Thing Jian Shuo: If I had to rely on the media in my country, I'd probably have come to the same conclusion as AussiePB :) The fact is, whatever country you're in, you should always be sceptical when it comes to the media. Fortunately the Internet provides a great way of verifying stories that you read in the paper or see on TV. Unfortunately you guys in China have that thing called the Great Firewall, but it is still possible to either search in English or even better, get yourselves a web proxy! |

Different Views of the Same Thing This reminds me of a recent poll that showed nearly half of the American population still believes that Saddam Hussein had strong links to Al Qaeda. It certainly shows how purportedly independent media can be skewed by factors such as "patriotism" and Rupert Murdoch. Let's hope Rupert doesn't do the same thing to the WSJ. |

Thoughts about Traffic Jam I feel for your pain. But I gotta say that the traffic jams can be just as bad (if not worse) in countries where you can sue or vote out the government :) BTW, not every western country is like the US in terms of being litigious. It's only the Americans that think of suing first whenever they've got a problem. The rest of us don't see that as something to be proud of. |

Fight Between Foreigners and Local BTW, I think you mean "security guard" rather than "safeguard". The latter is something that's quite different :) |

Baseball Game (San Francisco Giant v.s. Arizona Diamondbacks) If you think this is slow you should try test cricket! |

Can you Understand Dish Names in China? Actually this ambiguity only exists in Simplified Chinese. The character for "dry" in Traditional Chinese is 乾 which does not carry the other meaning. |

PVG: From Pudong Airport to Hangzhou Richard: There is no direct train service from PVG to Hangzhou. You could catch the maglev + metro to get to the Shanghai Railway South Station, where you can get a train to Hangzhou. |

Strengthen the Control of Speech Well it's supposed to be used for receiving CCTV, however technically it can easily receive other channels :) |

China Eastern Airlines Depending on the booking conditions of her ticket there may be a fee between £35 and £80. Of course if seats in the original booking class is not available then there may be an additional fee to cover the price differential. Their contact details in Malaysia can be found at http://www.ce-air.com/cea2/en_US/cea2_enUS_agents_query/0,15284,-10003_87,00.html?sid=-10003&cityId=87 |

Train from Beijing to Shanghai FWIW, the through train to Hong Kong from either Beijing or Shanghai have two-person compartments that sells for about HK$1k per person (single fare). They're just like the soft sleepers sans the upper bunks. |

Accident in Shanghai Metro Being under the influence of a narcotic could be a contributing factor. |

How I Drive in Shanghai? One of the silliness that makes turning right difficult without pushing past pedestrians is that the pedestrians' light often turns green/red at the same time as the traffic light for that direction. If that was changed so that the pedestrians' light's green period did not completely coincide with the traffic light's then it should improve the likeliness of having more civil drivers. This should also help pedestrians to appear more civil to drivers. Remember that pedestrians have not been trained to think like drivers while we (those holding drivers licences) have been. |

GPRS Package from China Mobile Wow, unlimited bandwidth for only 500 a month! Think of all the call charges you'll save when using VOIP (if only GPRS was fast enough). Do you have any info on 3G plans, if there are any in China? |

Serious Ill caused by Serious Mistake Getting it wrong once is excusable but four times in a row is definitely unacceptable. If she ever finds out the reason behind this debacle please let us know. However, a misdiagnosis of thrombocytopaenia is actually not uncommon. The problem is that the blood platelet count can rapidly decrease if the blood sample is not analysed quickly. What this does show though is that (as you would in any country) if you receive a significant diagnosis like this, you should always consult a second (or third...) opinion. It never hurts to shop around, even with doctors. Doctors are humans too, and they do make mistakes. BTW, I don't think any country can boast a perfect health system. Each has its own set of problems. Some are better than others but I don't think anyone can really afford to sneer at China's system. Here in Australia we do have universal health care (which the US does not), but we also have a chronic shortage of doctors, especially in rural areas. We even had to import doctors from the US and one of them who ended up in Queensland has earned the nickname "Doctor Death" :) |

Future Shanghai Metro and Maglev Map Ben: Well he might be able to finish his job off :P Yep, it is definitely a trade-off. After five millenia of civilisation I don't think anybody has found the perfect form of government just yet. So it is quite presumptuous to use the superiority of one form of government over another as a justification for war. But then again, that's what governments have always done. Indeed, the best form of government in another country is one that listens to yours :) |

Future Shanghai Metro and Maglev Map FaguoRen: You're quite right. I was referring to the Anglo-Saxon governments rather than the continental style. |
| 18 |
Future Shanghai Metro and Maglev Map BTW, the reason they're not being built much in the West is due to a general reluctance on the part of governments to take on large public infrastructure projects that have significant initial funding requirements. Due to the relatively short terms Western governments have between elections, they tend to optimise themselves for short-term gain rather than long-term benefit. |

Future Shanghai Metro and Maglev Map Ben is absolutely right. Maglev trains also emit a lot less carbon relative to other transport technologies due to their energy efficiency, even when the electricity is generated from traditional sources such as coal. http://www.21stcenturysciencetech.com/articles/Summer03/maglev2.html |

How to Advertise on this Blog? CNN, BBC, NHK, DW, ABC (assuming the Australian Broadcasting Corporation rather than the American channel) are usually free for satellite users in all areas. |

Happy Valentine's Day jqian: I'm not so sure. Valentine's is pretty important in Australia/US, unless you're single of course. Forgetting to get the right present in time is a relationship-limiting move. |

I am not a Big Fan of Hate... xge: The word jingoism predates the Chinese phrase by many decades. It has its origins in the phrase "by Jingo" which was used in a popular song sung in British pubs back in the 19th century. That phrase itself goes as far back as the 17th century. It's supposedly a less sinful way of saying "by Jesus". |

Blue Check (Check-in) for Virgin Blue A lot of carriers now support online/electronic check-ins. For domestic Australian flights Qantas also has self-service check-ins. All you need is the credit card you used to book your ticket. I'm about to board a Cathay Pacific flight and they also have an online check-in system where you can check in through the Net 48 hours before the flight. You can then arrive at the airport 45 minutes before the flight to drop off your baggage at a special counter for online check-ins and pick up your boarding pass (or passes for connecting flights). |

Drive on the Right in China There may be cars with steering wheels on the right in China (These are known as Right-Hand-Drive or RHD vehicles, as opposed to LHD). All Hong Kong vehicles coming in to Shenzhen would be RHD. Vice versa, mainland vehicles going into Hong Kong would be LHD vehicles driving on the left side. |

Drive on the Left in Australia James: We don't have "drive on left", but we do have "keep left" signs in NSW. Stephen: It does seem a bit weird to me to describe driving on different sides of the road as multiculturalism. After all, not many people would call a party with Aussies and Yanks (throw in a few Poms^H^H^H^HBrits for good measure) as multicultural :) |
