100 Your Opinion about French Revolution

I'm very disappointed to see so many Chinese trying to dig up something dirty from the French history in the last 1-2 weeks.
I am NOT saying you are such a case.
But it did make an impression to me, slogans like "Jeanne d'Arc is a filthy whore" or "Napoléon is a pervert" which have been in the Chinese cyber-space or even on the streets.
And now you dig around French history too.

I can't understand this hatred towards the French. Yes, they had several protests against the Chinese policy. Yes, they had a security breach which lead to a big embarrassment.
This made the French more despised than the Japanese who have robbed, murdered and raped the Chinese so many times.

Does that make any sense?

At least to me - no. Sarkozi made an official apology to China. The president of the French olympic committee went to China and officially apologised to Jin Jing herself. French business high-ranking managers claimed they had nothing to do with those protesters. The President of the European Commission José Manuel Barroso went to China shortly afterwards to ensure the Chinese president for the umptienth time that the EU regards Tibet as a part of China and that they would not support any change of the current boundaries.

And yet, the Chinese public opinion was not changed and little was done to soften the tone. It became a matter of pride and patriotism in China to resent the nasty French that "want to see China divided".
It seems to me that some Chinese just need to hate someone for the sake of it.

I was in France last summer; there're quite a lot of Chinese in Paris. They seemed pretty happy. Of course I haven't spoken to a hundred people, I'm just talking about those who I met. They faced no racial prejudice, at least not more than in the rest of Europe. In many parts of France Chinese language is taught in schools and well-respected. (Well, if you ask my opinion about it, French don't speak good Chinese, but it's another story...) And, as a whole, there's much interest about the culture of China, the medicine and the people.

However all that simply didn't matter. Most French people don't even have any idea of how much their "rating" has fallen in China. Simply because they feel as if they haven't done anything wrong.
Yes, there was an accident and they apologised.
So, why bring the old story again?

I'm sorry, maybe I was off-topic... I hope you don't boycott Bulgarian products because of it (I just made you look at the map didn't I?)

98 Fake Market in Shanghai?

It's kind of funny that the author of this site even admits that he/she was unable to differentiate the difference between the "fake" products and the "real" products. The truth is that the only difference is a licensing agreement. The so called "fake" items are oftentimes better quality than the store bought items. They are the same material and the workmanship is just as good. Also, if you are buying clothing, then you will notice that the unlicensed products have not been handled by store employees or tried on by customers. They usually come mint condition in the bag. Finally, the so called "fake" products are about 80% lower than the prices of the same thing in the malls. Yes! It is the same thing. I spoke to a represented of Ralph Lauren once and they admitted to me that the "knock-offs" were the same thing, however, their customers would not buy if the price was that low. There you have it! It is all psychological. Let's face it...there is only so much value that you can add to a cotton shirt or leather purse before the price becomes ridiculous. If you are buying the "real" products in the mall then you are getting ripped off.

97 Friends Started to Boycott French Products

Chinese are consistently getting this wrong, perhaps because the media in China is completely controlled on political issues and lies to its citizens day in and day out. But what Chinese are getting wrong is that the protests in France and other advanced countries were not anti-Chinese - they were against specific policies of the Beijing Government. Chinese need to take a look at why advanced countries (the people of) are so upset with China. You are right - boycotts just do turn people into anti-French or anti-China zealots when the boycotts target a whole people.

I have an invention that just might be the answer to the high gas prices. But i need help, I have gotten an average of 100 mpg on several differant fuel injected vehicles. I am in the pantant pending stage at this time,Awaiting approval from the patant examiner which I understand should be at any time. After that I will be in need of support to obtain funding to get protection overseas. My plan is to mass produce the invention here in my home town and put at least 1000 people to work at the start, and will never sell out to any oil company. I have spent everything I can borrow beg or steal even my retirement on this project and I cant quit now, I just need help in getting this invention off the ground, I would really like for Mr. Warren Buffet to take a look at this and call me at 870-275-0314 .I have all the information available for him. This device will be installed on the vehicles we have already bought and paid for, that we drive every day and has been tested by EPA approved test equipment and with no emissions. If anyone would like you can check a news story at kait8.com that aired some time back on our local tv station, I think you will find it quite interesting. Thank You very much, Mike Haynes.

69 7 Tips to Travel to China This Quarter

Hi there! I intend to go to China in Sep to take Chinese language lessons. However, many sources have told me that students who are already in China will have no chance to extend their visa before mid-October. If student visas can't even be extended, will I have any chance to be granted one at all? Or should I opt for a tourist visa?

For me it wouldn't make that much of a difference. I'm just trying to figure out the best way to secure a visa for Sep 08. Has anyone of you applied for a student visa recently?

33 Your Opinion about French Revolution

I totally agree with Damien about french revolution and may 68. French revolution is a classes revolution where poor people are opposed to rich.

But may 68 is considered as an intellectual revolution. It's a revolution where french people share some mind liberty aspirations. The moto was something like "it 's not allowed to prohibit".
These events are some kind of what happened during tian anmen square protests in 1989.

31 Your Opinion about French Revolution

I'm not going to comment about the possible similarities between the French revolution and the Chinese cultural revolution. This topic is way too complex for me and I don't know much about the Chinese one anyway.

In fact I just wanted to say how admirable I think it is to react the way you do ("seek first to understand before seek to be understood")... Clearly you're a wise person Jian Shuo Wang.

Now since I'm here I'd like to share something I'd like more people to remember of; In 2004, special celebrations of the Chinese New Year occured in Paris... During 5 days, even the Eiffel tower was illuminated in red to remind everybody of China! See this page about most of the special illuminations of the tower :

It reminds me of the time I was studying and dreaming of coming in China someday... I thought I could enjoy this friendly relationship between our countries, and 4 years later, this is still what I was thinking as I was flying to Shanghai, so excited about being about to begin my first real job in China.

A few months after, I feel very uncomfortable when people ask me where I'm from and I don't even know if our young company will survive these "troubles"... Sad.

24 Error in Western Media Report about Tibet

The reality is cold.
If all Austrilian people go back to where their ancestors from, all Canadian people go back to where their ancestors from, all south American European people go back to where their ancestors from, then I will agree to let Tibetan seperate from China.
You European people did bad things before. We Chinese just want to do the same thing for a while. Then we can be equally bad. Then we can forgive you guys. Only bad people can forgive other people. Read the Bible. Jesus told us about that. He said we are all sinful, so we should forgive.

I actually find the trees more impressive than the power lines :-) To me, it makes a big difference when a city has managed to save room for some trees. It looks like there are a lot in the neighborhood near your office.

20 Your Opinion about French Revolution

If you want to have a glimpse of the French spirit before the Revolution, watch "Ridicule", a quite enjoyable French movie, which depicts some of our (good and also bad) features. But if you want to understand this country's present state, May 68 is more important than the Revolution, for its effects on our society are more important . Then you will discover many of the Leaders of May 68 were inspired by Mao! Therefore it is easier to understand why some French are more uncomfortable with present China than other Europeans: the Cultural Revolution was then seen as a revolutionnary model, but 40 years later we know the truth about maoism. It is quite stunning to see that some of the most vehement China contempters in France were former maoists. In the sixties they had a idealized image of China. Now it is just the opposite, as if they tried to make up for their past blindness. Still, despite what is said on the internet, France is the European country where China has most assets, with the largest Chinese community (450,000 or 500, 000) and Chinese is the fastest expanding foreign language (with several Confucius Institutes being set up), and it has a very strong cultural impact.

19 Friends Started to Boycott French Products

Paris 2008

The French were about to start organizing the Olympics they had longed for more than 80 years. But when the sacred Torch went to Beijing, the Free Corsica movement, which had been popular in China for quite a long time, started to erupt and violent protesters, despite a massive security display , managed to take possession of the torch and used it to burn in Tiananmen Square a giant French flag covered with a swastika, while French athletes were attacked with smelly corsican cheese which caused them to stay in hospital for a few weeks. Horrified, the French governement reacted promptly and threatened to stop all Chinese imports, starting with the underwear. The conflict escalated when the Chinese stopped all exports of female underwear to France. However, the loss for consumers in France was compensated for with a surge in the tourism industry, as a new fashion, "I wear no underwear and I'm proud", spread in the whole country and caused a large part of the world to sympathetize with the female part of the french population. In China, the lack of baguettes, croissants and Château-margaux caused some riots and the price of these goods on the black market soared. At the eve of the opening ceremony, in Paris, the tension reached its climax when rumors of a boycott by the Chinese President were not disclaimed by his spokesman. Angry Frenchmen demonstrated in front on some Chinese restaurants and even burnt some teddy bears (99% of them being made in China), but it caused them to get intoxicated. The Made in China label was booed in France, while in China, I love Corsica teeshirts and pictures of Pascal Paoli flourished. Jacky Chan and Jet Li even played in a movie (shot in corsican)villifying French exactions in Corte, and Zhang Ziyi declared her love for chestnuts, brocciu and figatellu, while dressing in a Corsica Friendly designed Damas Turchino dress for the Oscars! Then the Chinese President sent a apology letter, said he got Corsica for Croatia, and of course supported the unity of France. What could be the cause for such a stunning turn of events? Some said the love for Champagne, which had been for long anavailable because of the boycott, had been to strong, but the real cause was that, China was being submitted with millions of applications from Corsican immigrants, who threatened to weaken the already overpopulated country, and also that the "I wear no underwear" fashion, whose diplay was to be celebrated during the opening ceremony, was after quite a pleasant thing.

Maybe that is really the impression of so-called emerging dragon power on the rest of the world.

Terror does not mean terrorism. It means the lack of security - no matter it is because of natural disaster, or operation mistake.

When we see too many bad things, especially to something very close to you, you feel that bad things may happen to you at any time. That is the sense of insecure.

I don't understand why you describe events such as foot and mouth disease and train crashes as "terror". Yes they may be terrible, but these things happen all the time. China has disease outbreaks like SARS, bird flu, floods and some bad accidents everv year. If anything, 2008 will be safer because of all the security.

These are really bad in China. People can not know or believe what happened truly. Don't we think the media does work for government? So many key problems make people who live in other countries believe that Chinese lead a very poor life.

Traffic accidents are seen every day, but people DO not obey traffic rule.

You will be not surprised to see traffic jams everywhere in Shanghai or Beijing or even small cities in China. There are many evident reasons to cause the daily traffic jams, like narrow roads, or road bottle-necks. Why do the government make a good and long-term plan when road construction? Why do not the people obey the traffic rules? Why do so many people have no safe understanding? Today I heard a shuttle bus near our apartment hit a man and the man was dead on the ground. TOO BAD, TOO TOO BAD. How does the life go on????

3 More Accidents in 2008

Allison,
Thats exactly what I thought about when I read the post. I dont think that it is that these things never happened in the past, it is just that the news didnt report them, and the biggest change being the instant communications via the internet. I think the internet is playing a large role in getting the media to report more "bad" news. If the news doesnt say anything about the bus accident, then some Shanghai blogger is likely to have seen it and will blog about it, post pictures, etc. Then those on the BBS etc speculate that is was terrorism, etc and the speculation gets out of hand quickly. In the past this didnt really exist, and you might have just had some people in the neighborhood gossiping about it without the information spreading far.
But I dont think Chinese media can yet come close to the US in the are of fear mongering. By the way, I thought Bowling for Columbine was an excellent movie and really helps to explain alot of things about America

Hmmm... Yes, a lot seems to be happening in China but so little if one considers that China has what ? 1/3 of the world`s population ? As for hoping to get "timely, accurate information"...I can not think of one country that is not a wee bit biased these days. At the Atlanta`s games (1996), a small bomb exploded and the "terrorist" was quickly arrested...and quietly released after the games: wasn`t him.

The news in the "democratic world" are so very often biased or wrong. Never in my life, have I felt as safe as when I was in China.

I doubt these events had anything to do with terrorism, just sloppy management on the side of the government bodies (the claim of terrorism might be a way for the government bodies to try and cover their mistakes).

I do agree with you about fear. I think better monitoring and management is needed on the part of the government ministries. I know that Chinese people don't trust these organizations and that's why they're so fearful.
