IBM vs Dell Laptop This isn't a question of good vs bad, but worse vs worst. Modern electronics manufacturing is not about quality, but statistical failure rates and warrantly/customer service. I buy many computers for my business, and my criteria are raw perfermance and my perceived customer service of the manufacturer. It is certain that some parts will fail in your computer in 1, 2, or 3 years time. (In fact, the makers are pretty sure when any given part in your computer will fail). Every computer will fail eventually, and much sooner than most think. The question is once a part does fail, will the manufacturer quickly fix it for you without hassle. i like dell because they have a very efficient operation, and I can be sure that any problems will be quickly resolved. The cost of days wasted waiting for a computer to be repaired is an unacceptable cost, and would keep me away from buying from smaller manufacturers. I know in china that people still hold very much to the thought that "better" brands have better parts that will last longer, and some marginally might, but for the most part this is really an obsolete idea. Maybe this idea sticks in china because a computer purchase, relatively speaking, is a larger percentage of one's income than in the west and the want to protect their investment. Another reason might be that the customer service culture has not take hold yet in china. However, from the manufacturer's view, there is not enough profit to be gained from putting in "better" internal parts nobody can see, as compared to using the lowest priced but acceptable part and competing on price (and customer service for the business users). The purchaser would better be served buying from a maker with a good customer service reputation and spending a little more on extended or enhanced warranties. For example, I paid $50 more for "accidental coverage" for the laptop I'm typing on, and for me, it makes complete sense. As a business traveler, I can easily imagine dropping it or spilling coffee on it, and Dell will have it fixed or replaced in a day or two. This wonderful peace of mind is a great value for a mere $50, and allows me to continue my business with minimal interruption. Compare this to a small time manufacturer or one with bad service that might take two weeks to fix a problem, at which time my business may have been severely impacted. |

Why People Don't Use Voice Mail in China Jianshuo, You are right, I agree with your analysis about the voice mail. I registered the voice mail feature for my mobile account. And there are so many times, people called me but don't leave any voice in the box if I missed the call for some reason. Almost a whole year, I got only two voice mail, one is from real estate agent and another is from my girlfriend who was convinced by me to use voice mail. - Jack |

Who is Chris Devonshire Ellis - Part II @ Ryan . Yes that is blackmail. Any of these emails can be published without a problem. If you want to expose the man as a thug with a bow tie this is it. I read he threatened to have visa canceled and stuff like that. I hope he was not too confused to write that to JianShuo as well :-) I think the #cde strategy to bully his way out of this is not going to work. If he continues on this path of blackmail and threats he might be the one without a visa. The solution for him is quite simple: No lies then also no need to blackmail people because the animosity on the web seems to center around his lies. His responses only caused more problems for him. Strange man. |

Who is Chris Devonshire Ellis - Part II Amen to that! Well said JianShuo. Imaginary friends online, imaginary officials. Which minister would ever consider a request to bully a Chinese blogger who does nothing wrong? I do not know any person stupid enough to take such a request to a minister, not even a bureau head. Especially if it comes from some arrogant British guy. I am sure that after his "interviews" no official wants to be seen within a mile from him anyway. Made trouble at the highest levels of government....not good. He just seems to behave like a street rat. I think your policy of "friendly requests will be taken into consideration, bullies will be thrown out' is very good. And you can always do as in the restaurant during your bad lunch, call 110 and maybe there will be a policeman in his office within 3 minutes too. If I read your posts I see that your are a very friendly and happy person. Other people think so too, that's why your blog is so popular and that is why you do not need imaginary friends. This blog has a lot of positive and interesting items on it often enough to bring a smile to peoples faces and brighten up their day. Thank you! |

Discrimination Against Foreigners in Shanghai? China is "eating" everything and everyone. From history we know that everything what gets into this region becomes assimilated. Speaking of children, I agree no more. I have a mixed child and I speak my language to him. But in this environment, with all the attention he gets from anyone, everyone, everywhere, it becomes more difficult for him to be motivated to speak my language. Sometimes, I pretend that I don't understand what he answers to me in Chinese. If we rase him in Shanghai, he will only speak Chinese, maybe also Shanghainese, it's very hard to motivate him lern my language. Why? Everyone around speaks Mandarin.. |

Where to Study Chinese, Beijing or Shanghai? Hey there - this blog has been a great find. Loads of really helpful information. I'm in a bit of a dilema. I've got gap year in which I want to live in a foreign country and learn a new language - the problem is I don't know which one. Part of me wants to learn Mandarin in Beijing/Shanghai because I'm interested in the culture, career-wise it will be good for me and I'm from that part of the world ethnically. I'm hesitant, however, because I fear that I'll spend 6 months out there and come home with only a basic grasp of the language. How true is this? Is Mandarin really as difficult as it seems? The other part of me wants to learn Spanish in Beunos Airies because it's an easier language and South America interests me as well. My only hesitation with this option is that Spanish will not be as useful to me in the long-run as Mandarin; although I can expect to gain a better command of it. If anyone has any advice for me, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Jack |

Donation in China I am not sure if you mean the common people or the rich guys. As i know, there are such donation in China. For example, some buildings in SJTU and FuDan are donated by someone. Maybe it is not popular as US. I believe donation is a good topic to discuss. For chinese, maybe need some concepts changes. Keep up the great work! |

Chengdu Impression if let me choose, i will choose "ShenZhen" as the fourth city in China because of its economic position though i more like ChengDu & ChongQin. I love ChengDu because of good food, many travel places, the causal environment. It is a fanastic place! One of the best places suitable to live in CHina |

Inside Pudong Airport Maglev Train My trip was great! Even a non-speaker of mandarin, I made it from the far end of a bus line to Subway # 1, transferred to #2 at Peoples Square and found the Maglev terminal without problems. Ride was very smooth, no problems with sightseeing out the windows either. No sound or vibration that would compare with even the Shinkansen. But the bus rattled, the brakes squealed and it took awhile. The subways were jammed tight wuth people in midafternoon. Would be a problem to take much luggage that way. Went by taxi later when we left with luggage, a nice trip for us but not for folks merging onto the highway-at one point backed up behind an accident. Note the picture of the switch (turnout) connecting the two roadways. It looks like they have bendable sections to accomplish this! |

Google: IPO First, then Dance If you notice the news about google, you may know how busy Google is. Google News (in test), Google Browser (possible), Google IM (possible), plus the blogger.com, okbut, gmail, Google toolbar, etc It seems with the great branding and reputation, possible with the requirement from shareholders, Google are investing so many areas besides search. I like Google, whatever it does, hope it can be as great as its search. |
