Shanghai Metro People's Square Station To be honest, I get completely confused last time I was there, I even cann't remember way back, while I was pretty sure half a year ago.\ It is not that I am not able to get used to how it looks now, it is where it goes to and how fast it is going that shakes me down. Train from Shanghai to Nanjing - CRH (D) That would be so great, at least I don't have to take stand ticket if urgent leave to HangZhou is necessary, which I did once and should never forget about experience. Everything looks pretty nice. I would try not long time later :) JC |

New Regulations to Kill Group Renting in Shanghai I really don't see what is the point of these "policy", where do these so-call "policy makers" come from???? As a "migrant workers without hou kou", I gave nearly 10 score for the first time I came here before graduate, and I felt quite willing to locate myself here, but looking into this, I feel a little confused about the decision made 2 years ago. Without a doubt there are different kinds of discrimination in cities China as long as you are from so-call not that modern places compared to the one you go, we accept that, and it is easy to see that people with high income will stand this easily, but how about middle and low income groups, is it Darwin's theory gonna work again at this point? I better hope not! I really hope, and I am trying to be a good government policy follower, pay income tax voluntary, do legal business, Q-up so on, but when facing this, specially as a "migrant workers without hou kou", I really expect re-considering "policy" action could happen. Good post anyway, thank you very much, Jianshuo. JC |

Arranging Hong Kong - Xian - Beijing Trip Hi, We had rip recently(May 2007) from SFO-Shanghai-Beijing-SFO. We bought tickets SFO-PVG, PEK-SFO as multi-city via UAL website www.ual.com. Oddly enough, the cost is lower than direct city(SFO-PVG-SFO or SFO-PEK-SFO), you may check the rate base on schedule whether UAL pricing has been changed. We bought air tickets locally for Shanghai-Beijing leg about 520RMB one way. |

Faster Bullet Trains in China Hi Jian Shuo, I love train travel, specially after reading your blog about Z train report from Beijing to Shanghai. I did train travel in Europe for my honeymoon back in 1999: Leaving from flight SFO to Paris, then took train for the rest of the trip. Paris->Milan->Lousanne->Rome->Barcelona->Paris, then flew back to SFO. We will do again in 2009 to celebrate our 10 years aniversay. My family and I are traveling to China(Shanghai and Beijing) for vacation. Arriving PVG from SFO(UA857) on May 11,2007, leaving from PEK for SFO(UA888) on May 26. Planning to take Z14 train from Shanghai to Bejing on May 18, can we check our luggage in Shanghai train station for the train we are taking? So, I don't have to carry luggages and attending the youngsters(4 and 2 year old) at the same time while borading the train? Is 'Z' train still holding up its standard? Thinking about doing day trip to Hangzhou via CHR train, any recommendation for transportation, place to visit and eat in Hangzhou? We will be staying at servic apartment 'Regalia' in Shanghai, any comment on this place? Also, worth to mention that the adult air ticket is only $887.81, purchase on March 7 as multi-city SFO-PVG(outbound) and PEK-SFO(inbound), which is $200+ cheaper as to SFO-PVG-SFO!! Bought thru UAL website directly. Cheers, JC |

My Experience with Hong Kong JS - you are perfect in your description of HK traffic vs. Shanghai. in reverse, I describe Shanghai traffic to people as 'loose regard for the rules, but not aggressive, and everyone knows what to expect'. of course I did see a very angry scooter driver get bumped by a taxi just yesterday... but mostly the system works because everyone agrees how the rules will be interpreted. HK is more 'western' in traffic - the lights are absolute, and if it is green you could be run down! in Shanghai everyone equally is trying to go at the same time, so 4-wheels, 2-wheels or none, you keep your eyes out, watch out for being run over and take care not to run some one else down. I prefer it - despite honking is frustration, it is still much less 'tense' than most other cities anywhere near it's size around the world. |

First Week in Pudong Hi, I will be moving to Pudong from Singapore in 3 week's time and are actively looking for a new apartment with good river view, accessible by public transport to the CBD, shopping and eating places, especially important at night and weekend since I will be staying alone. Any great recommendations? |

How to Read Shanghai Bus Stop Plate spitting, piss and hiss are the common stuff in everyplace in the world, just for personal convenience or urgent necessity. Again, we have to explode to economical and educational strength of the place. People in rich country customarily has less poor sanitary habit, but still existed. I did see people from their cars, just low down their window, threw out the cigarrette bud and unfinished soda. It happened in well-developed country. When economical, educational and moral standard are elevated, those bad habits will be decreased to the minimum. It will never be totally eliminated. I live in Las vegas where there are so many magnificent casinos, hotels, restaurants and fast food serivces. I have no problem to find a bathroom. Besides, there are so many waste baskets, along the street and outside supermarket, and chain stores, too. For the convenience of the local residents, that certainly makes people to do the right thing and kick off the bad habit. Anyway, there are so many reasons and seems no specific answer yet. To improve country's or city's images, politicians should do something seriously to minimize those bad habits. Rome is not built in one day. Time and other factors should be counted as well |

Where to Study Chinese, Beijing or Shanghai? Thanks xiaopan. I'll look into FESCO. Is this a service that you have used? If so what did you think of it in terms of the teaching quality? How much does it cost? |

Where to Study Chinese, Beijing or Shanghai? I am planning on working in Shanghai, but I'd also like to take chinese classes. I have looked into Jiaotong, Fudan and SISU, but they only seem to have classes during the day. Does anyone know where I can take night or weekend classes at any school in Shanghai? If not, it seems like Jiaotong and SISU offer the best program for chinese language. Is this true? Also, I'd like to focus on business chinese, so any comment on what the best place to study would be very helpful. Thanks |
