11 Living Cost in Shanghai (2007 Edition)

Dear Wang Jian Shuo,

I'm not sure if you received my message that I left on an earlier posting, so I'm posting it again. I'll be in Shanghai next week, and I was wondering if you had time to meet with me.
Thank you and I look forward to hearing from you.

I’m a Korean-American student studying at Middlebury College in Vermont , USA . I am currently conducting a research project in China on blogging and self expression. I was wondering if you had time to meet with me for an interview. The interview should last no longer than 30 minutes and, if you choose, your identity will remain anonymous.

8 One Child Policy in China

Hi all,
I don't read all previous comments so I might just make that very annoying newcomer mistake of repeating something that was already discussed. I have to say, I think China is very serious about alternative energy sources, although I only have experience in the field of cars and other vehicles. The biggest advantages for developing countries like China might be leapfrogging, and I think that might be the case with alternative energy--instead of becoming wholly dependent on gas monsters like America, China is developing hybrid vehicles and has a strong central government to make every average Joe pay extra money to drive around cleaner cars.

Of course, this doesn't solve the issue of paying off an official, nor does it really have to do with the one child policy issue. But it does show SOME foresight on the part of the government.

7 Shanghai South Railway Station

I live right by the Zhongshan Park Station on Metro Line 2, and in my opinion there's a better way to get to the South Station. If you're coming from the airport (or anywhere in Pudong, for that matter), take Line 2 all the way to Zhongshan, and transfer to Line 3 (the YELLOW line on the light rail, not the purple line! for those not familiar w/ the light rail) and it will take you straight to South Station. It used to be a huge hassle to transfer, but now that they've upgraded the station, there's a very convenient walkway/tunnel that will take you up to the light rail system. Through a very nice mall. Probably still not ideal if you have a lot of luggage, but it avoids the insanity at People's Square.

4 I am at an EMBA Class in SJTU

The reason is that who has the money to invest for the blog business will not go to write blogs,or even though have time to read the blog in China. Since these men come from traditional industry, they are not interested to share their thoughts with others. In China, if u want to have a successful career,go to a high level, pls keep silence.Do not give the competitors any opportunity to know what u are thinking.
Perhaps ten years later, the children grow up in the era of blog,it's a suitable time to recommend economic of eyeball.

2 Life in New York is Tough for Me

I definately agree with Xinyu's comments.

You can't compare two cities based on Absolute Price because you were a tourist in New York. It's also ridiculous to reach the conclusion that CNN's survey is wrong based on all your Absolute Price comparision between Shanghai and New York.
You should know: No one lives in New York got his or her paychecks from Shanghai in RMB.
*****************************************************************************
I lived in Shanghai for more than 20 years before came to New York 3.5 years ago.
At the beginning, I had the same feeling as you.
It's kind of unafforadable to live in this city because I always multiplied everything by 8. Then the prices were just crazy!
But when i went back to Shanghai in July 2004, I made the same mistake. I divided the price of everything by 8, then everything became so so so cheap!
That's a wrong and confusing way to compare the living expenses of 2 cities.

Also sometimes you will find something "made in China" in NYC are even cheaper than the same stuff in shanghai (in Absolute Price), especially after the holiday season, everywhere is on Winter Big Sale. eg. I purchased a cashmere sweater from AnnTaylor only for $40 (include 8.625% tax already) after applying all the coupons. But as I know, the same quality cashmere sweater will cost at least 600RMB. (my mom purchase two cashmere for me at Shanghai, both of them cost more than 1000RMB)

So please don't be too subjective.
