25 I Felt Afraid of Public Opinions Now

JS - Even though I am not as high-profile as you, I feel the same way (I think). Right now, it's hard to know when a crowd will turn against you, either for something you say, or something you do, or something you don't say or do. This makes me question all my actions, and restrict myself.

And it must be scary for the government right now, too, with all the crowds taking justice into their own hands, regardless of their understanding of the situation. Even for good causes like getting Rescue Relief Tents to go to the right people, people get carried away and violent. It must be hard for the authorities to make sure people stay reasonable. When they apply too much (perceived) force to keep people under control, the crowds turn against them and demonize them. How can they balance a crowd who is fighting for a good cause but in the wrong way? The same goes for all the other volatility in the past month or so...

I don't envy the powers that be right now.

24 Shanghai After Sichuan Earthquake

"5 Many young people are vending national flags, or T-shirts with "Love China""

do you think this is useful or beneficial to people? or do you think this leans more toward opportunism?

23 Seat-Belt? Oh. No. Thanks!

"That is not comfortable. It is the time to relax"

By far my favorite! If someone thinks this this way... when is it NOT the time to relax?

Out of the three, it's the most hilarious argument to me.

22 China's Moon Probe Chang'e I Launched

I'd really like to spend some time on the sohu website reading, but i can't take their loud music and effects! It seems like it would be so easy to add a volume control or at least a mute button....

21 Happy Moon Cake Festival

Hope you had a good time yesterday, WJS.

a couple of questions:

"I would say the Lunar Calendar is a miracle that in the last one thousand years after Lunar Calendar was established, it always preciously describe the movement of moon. 15th of the month is always full moon, and at Mid-Autumn Festival, if you look up into the sky, you can always see (if the sky is clear) a full and bright round moon."

What happened this year? The full moon is 2 days after mid-autumn festival... Last night was nice and clear, so i looked up and could see that the moon wasn't completely round yet... The newspapers seem to agree, also.

20 Can you Understand Dish Names in China?

Actually, for me (an American-born and American-raised Chinese person), menus were one of the first things I could read. Growing up, I was very familiar with words for various dishes, because you *have* to be able to talk about Chinese food, when you're growing up around a lot of Chinese people.

And a lot of the characters for food are simple characters - meat, vegetables, noodles, rice, etc... (there are exceptions, of course).

So, after I moved here, and was improving my reading skills, menus were actually something that gave me confidence and helped me to continue learning to read.

19 Shanghainese Girl Marrying Foreigners

I humbly think that Yanqing Chen (see post above) offered a much better explanation for the phenomenon than Shanghai's truest ambassador Wang JianShou.

18 Everyone is Talking about Stock

If everyone is talking about stocks, it means a stock market crash is imminent. The Chinese stock markets currently trade at a PER of 33 -- a researcher once found out that over the long term (a 100-year time frame) the average PER of American stocks to be 16 and that anything above 30 signals a very high probability of a correction back to the average. This, despite the invention of railways, radio, television, telephone, the personal computer, mass media etc.

Once the market in China corrects, all those who look like stock market Rambos today will instead look like fools. This is especially true since this generation of Chinese has almost no experience with stock markets, this being a new phenomenon for them.

16 Hukou System in China

It sounds like China is just like Europe, filled by many state-size (wrt US) countries. To my understanding, visiting different provinces in China, one has to hold the corresponding _permits_. But hey! Even to travel inside europe one only have to get a general visa, isn't it?

Hum...Strange China...I'm Lovin' It.

15 Hire a Taxi? Avoid Rainy Friday

Fortunately I can walk home from work, taking about 30min. In the rain it's not a very fun walk but there's no alternative.

One Friday evening I wanted to meet some friends- it was raining a bit but not much. I waited almost 2 hours for a taxi in a few places before giving up and going back home- there were people standing on almost every corner trying to find a taxi and people were getting quite desperate, running after taxis or jumping in front of others.

I lived in Bangkok before and when it rains the taxis can be difficult to find, but nowhere near as difficult as here. The taxis there are nicer (new Corollas) and cheaper, despite similar price of gasoline. Somehow they still manage to make a profit, so not sure why there often seems to be a shortage here.

14 Trip to Xiamen

Hello,

I hope this thread is still alive.

I am interested to know where I can rent a bike in Xiamen. I'm visiting Xiamen in two weeks and will be staying at Lujiang Hotel, but based on their website, they don't have bikes for rent.

Thanks for your help

12 MagLev May Extend to Hangzhou

If the Maglev technology is just too expensive to be self-sustainable in a free market, then why is Germany being so restrictive with allowing China access to the technology? Surely allowing more applications with less control is better than having full control over nothing.

10 Life in New York is Tough for Me

2004 rankings are here: http://www.finfacts.com/costofliving.htm

It depends on what the cost-of-living index is taking into account. Most are from the perspective of a Westerner considering how much one would spend if one lived elsewhere- meaning cars, upscale housing, etc are all important factors.

London is ranked #2 this year but I lived there as a student and spent relatively little money.

Depends on the lifestyle and it's always easier to spend less money as a local.

9 Heavy Snow in Shanghai

the snow was quite a surprise- especially after having just moved here from tropical thailand. after work i took some pictures on nanjing donglu. the road was very slippery, lots of ice!

no worries about breaking the window by removing the ice. i grew up in pittsburgh where during the winter i'd often have to take snow and ice off the window and i can tell you the windows can take a lot of abuse.

8 Is the Real Estate Cooling Down?

i agree there's a bubble- i think prices will drop once short-term investors can't sell off to the next person, but don't think prices will tumble too far as there's still a strong demand for property and real estate here.

7 I Got my U.S. Visa

how long did it take you to get an appointment after you applied? one of our staff applied last week and her interview date was december 15th, too late to join our business trip.

i heard that if we sign up for amcham that we can expedite the process. seems worthwhile as otherwise our business is going to suffer if none of our staff can travel.
