Whatever the student asked, they were pacific. There is no possible justification to send tanks and kill students protesting. No country respecting life of his citizen ever did that.
It is a simple fact, thus the blame is ONLY on the gov side.

105 Train from Beijing to Shanghai

Hi,this is a very nice site. Thanks JSW.I am from the UK and have travelled on the Z trains and T trains between Beijing and Shanghai, also on K, D(Bullet) trains and plain number trains. There are about 10 a day listed..I have a few points to make.1) Before asking a question, why not scroll up and down this blog, because many of the questions being repeatedly asked are already answered.Example:the Beijing Shanghai fares! 2) If you are travelling soft sleeper, there is not much difference between Z and T, once you are in your compartment, and every time I have travelled, the compartment has been spotlessly clean. 3) what has not been mentioned is that the BJ/SH sleeper trains depart and arrive at convenient times for passengers to have some dinner aboard, watch a little tv,get a good night's sleep and have a wash and if they like, breakfast before arrival. That is why there are several around 7pm that arrive around 7am. They are quite capable of going faster, (and some do during the daytime), but who wants to be arriving in the middle of the night? 4) Some Z trains serve a free dinner in your compartment.I know the Z13/14 do, and there are free snacks already on the table when you enter.4) Someone said better stick to the western meals in the dining car. Well, many of the people asking questions here are from other Asian countries, and might like to try western food. Hahaha, But not surprisingly, most Chinese cooks seem better at Chinese food, and that is good on the train too.) 5) As has been said above several times, the compartments DO lock, but don't try calling an attendant before the train departs, because they are busy getting people into their compartments.6) Someone said they saw extra people crowding into a compartment. Not true. Passenger seats/berths are all reserved. What you probably saw was 'hard' berths, which have 6 beds, not 4, ( and are not really hard either!) 7) Someone asked whether a passport is needed to book a ticket. The answer is no, but you may be asked for it so the ticket seller can copy your name from it, instead of trying to guess what you are saying.8) Personal safety on Chinese trains. China is one of most crime-free countries in the world. There is no problem sharing a softsleeper compartment with others.No-one will steal your bags, and it is perfectly safe for a woman to travel on her own.Don't forget, the authorities know who bought the tickets for all the passengers. Just take the usual sensible precautions. You can put your valuables out of sight in your pocket, or under your pillow. If you go to the dining car, take them with you.
9) Buying train tickets. The only way to buy them outside China is through agents who don't do it for free. Some are very expensive. If you are staying at a hotel, you can ask them to buy your tickets. There will be a modest fee for delivery.however, it is easy to buy your own tickets too.At Beijing Railway Station and Beijing West Railway Station there are still special 'foreigner' counters with staff who speak English and some other languages. If you can't find the place, ask at the duty station master desk which is just inside the station. They speak English too. Of course, if you get someone to write down the details, you can do what I do and join the shortest queue at the ordinary ticket windows.10) If you want to know about trains to/from Hongkong to Beijing and Shanghai, you can find the official information here.
http://www.it3.mtr.com.hk/b2c/frmIndex.asp?strLang=Eng
11) Someone asked about a reasonable central hotel in Beijing. I can recommend the Harmony Hotel. It is in a sidestreet not more than 100 metres from the front of Beijing Railway Station, and less than 50m from the subway.Cost is aaround $45 USD for a standard room that is quite big and well-equipped. Most staff speak good English. You can find it and book it on line through many agents. Here is one. http://www.asiahotels.com/hotelinfo/Harmony_Hotel_Beijing/
12)Someone asked about a quick trip to the Great Wall on a short visit to Bejing. That is an easy one. There are lots of buses going to the Grat Wall at Badaling all the time.Bus time is about 1 each way.You can catch a local bus there from about 200m to the right of Beijing Railway Station. It says Badaling on the front in English and Chinese, and there are 'barkers' trying to fill up the buses. It only cost about US$2 fare, and stops as near as is allowed to the entrance of Great Wall, where there are lots of souvenir shops. There is a nice museum too.Other than that, the hotels such as the Harmony mentioned above, can all get you on a trip at short notice. If there are two or three of you, you could take a taxi, but agree the fare before you start,or get it from a hotel too A couple of hours on the wall is enough for most. You don't need a guide.
13)Lastly, someone asked about the January temperature in Beijing and Shanghai.Beijing is COLD!..down to -17C at night . you can look here. http://www.travelchinaguide.com/climate/beijing.htm
Shanghai is warmer. around freezing at night, and cool 9/10C high, during the day.Look here
http://www.travelchinaguide.com/climate/shanghai.htm
You can find most other chinese cities through the above links.

Now I have to get on with booking my ticket from Birmingham UK to Bejing for the last week in January. Then it will be the Z61 for the 1003 km north to Changchun(Soft Sleeper RMB352) 352...even colder than Beijing .. and after a week or so in Changchun, I will take a train further about 250km to Harbin for the Ice Festival....even colder. The K9 train takes something less than 3hours, for only RMB57 soft seat, or I may take the Changchun built D25 Bullet Train which takes just 1hr46min for RMB97.
Hope some of this is useful to someone.

96 Foreign Job Seekers Move to Shanghai

Not all foreigners end up with good jobs in Shanghai. I personally had a very well paying job in Shanghai but was getting tired of the job. Unfortunately, Shanghai is still very racist in that they still prefer that foreigners have a white face. I look Chinese, my race is Chinese, but I am not a Chinese citizen, and therefore don't have the same culture. I found interviews even at foreign organizations, very difficult as they were always expecting me to be white (since I sound like it on the phone!).

Many of the Indian taxi drivers have a university degree but can't find the equivalent work in America because they lack local experience.

Many Asian looking foreigners (that don't speak Chinese) in China/Shanghai have problems looking for high paying jobs because there is a bias towards how you look, instead of how you perform. The Shanghainese mentality is that IF YOU look white, you have an excuse to not speak their language, but if you look Asian, you SHOULD speak it because China is the center of the world...

93 Typical Rush Hours in Shanghai - Part II

Hi

I was in Shanghai in 1995 and credit card use was exceptional (except in hotels). Later I bought a laptop in Beijing and made several errors in checking and rechecking the piles of cash. The cash was drawn from ATM with several cards over several days... I felt foolish as I had just flown in from Hong Kong where I could have bought the same laptop at about the same price (as it was an international brand). Hey ho - that's travel for you.

88 SJTU - No 565 in the World Ranking

Hi WJS,
I think that the rankings are really not worth much. If you look at the methodology (http://www.webometrics.info/comparative_methodology.html) you can see that part of the ranking includes how many public web pages the university has and the number of incoming hyperlinks that the university has. This would mean that say if many students at the university had blogs and linked to their univeristy's home page, the university would rank higher.

Also, the "scholarly" ranking depends on how many articles could be found in scholarly journals where the author was attributed to the university. They use Google Scholar and Thompson's databases as a reference -- however these of course are incomplete indexes and do not contain all scholarly journals in publication. I'm not sure about how many foreign language (e.g. Asian language) journals these indexes would contain as well?

I also think it is about personal preferance when ranking universities. Personally, I don't really care if there are lots of links or if the univeristy has a big web site (maybe more useful is the non-public intranet websites), but rather the academic qualities. So I think that the "Scholar" ranking is more important!

John.

any .com site i just get an error message that I am not connected to the internet. hopeless. I can access most sites via a proxy but this is useless as I cannot access any secure sites such as my server based e-mail in america and I cannot access my internet banking outside of china...........Called the adsl provider and the answer was ......"you are online as you can see chinese sites so therefore its your own problem" my reply to this is RIPOFF. they take the money and run. This is not a questin of the authorities policing the internet its just a bad service, access to cn and block everything else.

78 "The Right to Refuse Service to Anyone"

I think mostly when people post signs like that, they are just trying to protect there business enviroment by someone who might cause unwanted damage to the property and the business it self. The sign is kind of rude but it only for stupid people who might cause disruptions for the business to regulate properly. As far as the legality go I suppose if its a personal property they can do watever they want and say watever they want because of freedom of speech how ever they cannot discriminate on the bases of race, religion, sex. Since all these things hold a stronger ground within all societies.

77 Shanghai Metro Map and Timetable

Good day Jian Shuo:

Thanks for posting the amazingly detailed map of Shanghai (the one that I can use the map viewer).

- is there a version which also has the street names in English? (even just the major streets)?
- what do those numbers like 136, 141 (white numbers in red blocks) mean? do they refer to hotels, buildings? is there a place where I can find that list?
- basically I ma looking at the exact location of the Metropole Hotel, and the Tianci Service Apartment in Huangpu.

Thanks again

73 Rent an Apartment in Shanghai

Hi All :

My family and I are relocating to Shanghai and we are looking for a fully furnished apartment commencing early October if possible . We have a few criteria :

1) Location
Our son would be going to school at SSIS at 1455 Hua Jing Rd in Xu Hui District . I would be working over in Pudong ,near 1200 Lu Jia Zhui Ring Rd . We hope to find a place that is within 20 minutes drive from the school and at the same time , not too difficult for me to get to work by public transport or the subway . I really don't want to go to work in a car and got stuck in the jam for hours ,

2) I need a min of 2 bedrooms , 3 would be preferable .

3) I need a gym to work out and if possible , a swimming pool as my son likes to swim .

I have a budget of RMB 10,000 .

I would appreciate if anyone can give me advice as to which locality , neighbourhood or buildings I can consider . PLs contact me ASAP at johnlee1628@yahoo.com.sg

Thank you very much in advance !

66 Train Tickets in Shanghai Railway Station

Be aware also, that you may not just get ONE ticket from your departure point to your destination. In both cases that I traveled by train in China this month I got 2 tickets. The first to an intermediate station and the second from that station to destination. In both cases I did not have to move seat or sleeping berth. Why the system is like this I would love to know but in busy times it is worth knowing about and at times I suppose you might need 3 (or more) tickets ^_^. In these cases you need to pay the agent (read hotel ticket office, or actual agent) the commision for each ticket so they will cost you 10 t0 20 RMB more each. It is worth using the agent to avoid travel to the actual ticket office but it can be a wait to find out if you can actually GET the ticket and then another wait to finally receive it.
I can confirm that the Maglev ticket office is very quiet and you should be able to avoid queing there.

55 The City and Its Moral Boundary

Same goes with the peddlers who sell fake watches or fountain pens. What is the logic here? Do the Chinese millionaires collect Rolexes and/or Mont Blancs? Or the tourists form USA? Germany? Japan? What?

Would be interesting to try some counter action: to run a business which pays, let's say, 10 RMB for every advertisement distributor or "Rolex" seller that someone (with proof, of course) has managed to keep outside the inner ringway. If it would work, I would probably contribute quite a bit :-)

48 I am at an EMBA Class in SJTU

Someone wrote "But most of the people in the class did not see bussiness oppertunity."

How come?!

Probably most of the bloggers blog just for fun, but there certainly are lots of business possibilities: be a blog service provider, develop blog software, use blog as your tool (if you are e.g. a researcher, journalist, author, analyst...), advertize in blogs, earn by having ads in your blog, ask bloggers to try out and write about your products or services (must be honest, otherwise the effect may be negative regardless of what they write), follow up blogs to know what people are writing about your (or your competitor's) products or services, run competitions (e.g. around the world tours) asking the participants to blog as they go, lift corporate image by asking the top management to blog (they do not have to write about the business all the time, can be personal too), etc. etc.

...just to mention few. :-)

45 RMB Finally Goes Strong

Well... revaluation of Yuan by 2.1% means that Chinese goods are now 2.1% more expensive everywhere outside China, and foreign goods imported to China are 2.1% cheaper. It could also be seen that, in a way, every Chinese traveller has 2.1% more to spend in other countries, while China as a travel destination is 2.1% more expensive. Inside China (if you have savings in RMB or fixed assets in China) it doesn't necessarily mean anything. But if you had plans to buy foreign currency, foreign products or invest to outside China, or if you reside in China while you get paid in currency other than RMB, you just "lost" 2.1% there.

43 Pudong Starbucks is Nice

Overprized? Yes of course. When there is not much competition, and when the occupancy is good enough, there's no need to compete with price. Why places like Häagen-Dazs are expensive in China? I think China has quite big import tax for dairy products: just go to Carrefour, for example, and check the prices of imported cheese and butter; some of them cost 2...6 times more than in wherever they were imported from.
Posted by John at 2005-07-11 14:26:39. More

42 Pudong Starbucks is Nice

Could it be about the tangible international atmosphere? In most of the Starbucks cafe's in Shanghai it's more than likely that there are also non-Chinese customers. Even if there isn't any at the moment, there are known to be them every now and then. That, although it's not very expensive place for the Shanghai middle-class, helps increasing one's clout (at least the perceivable clout, at least temporarily). Would it be about the remnants of the "affording to go to places like that"?

Or maybe you feels the "must to go" there because your competitors also go there - the ones with whom you are competing about jobs, relationships, business, guanxi, or other; i.e. it's the place to be if you want to belong to a certain group; in other words: it is in fashion.

And why the foreigners go there? As with McD or KFC, they can be pretty sure they get the same taste these joints serve also in other countries, they know the routine, and in Starbucks the salespersons do speak English quite well. It's clean. They have nice chairs and magazines and it's good place to gather for chatting. It's a cafe where you can be casual and relax - not a formal restaurant where a waitress peeks over every other second to change your plate or fill your glass.

Imagine you are a businessman and really novice with the places you travel, and you don't know anyone there. You get bored with the stuff in your hotel, so you start getting around a little bit, probing the alien world (Shanghai) from your little escape pod (Starbucks) and building some courage there to take the next step - to go to some Chinese restaurant accross the street the next day, for example.

Plus of course, some have developed themselves a habit of really liking coffee, comparing different coffee drinks, etc. Never mind the clout. Many prefer going to Starbucks instead of the many local or regional versions, such as the SPR Coffee or DIO Coffee - which are similar to some extent, but also serve some chinese food and aren't even close with the quality of coffee. If you drink coffee more than once a week, the taste really matters :-)

33 Chicago is Amazing

Metro price in NYC is $2 per ride, $7 one-day pass, and $21 one-week unlimited pass;
In Boston, it is $1.25 per ride (sorry I forget the price of one-day pass in BOS, roughly around $5).

Colors (green, blue, red, and orange) are also used in BOS to denote various lines; but not the case in the NYC. You definitely will be impressed and amazed by the metro system in the NYC. Remember to ask for one copy of free MetroMap of the NYC at MTA Kiosk as a wonderful souvenir.

Where are you now?

The proverbial dike that is keeping Chinese from expressing themselves freely is crumbling and the government is just rushing around sticking their thumbs in the holes. Despite many claims that things are opening up, it's the same old government: when something comes out that you don't like, censor censor censor and pretend it doesn't exist. It's really very sad to think how vibrant the Chinese intellectual community could be were it allowed to express itself in a free society.

20 Write Better Weblog

I wouldn't worry about putting links to Chinese language content. A little warning before or after that the linked page is going to be in Chinese and, if the reader can read it they will continue and if they can't they won't. Perhaps when the content of the link is important in understanding what you are writing you could provide a short summary of the important points in English on your page, but I don't think that your audience's inability to read Chinese should stop you from linking to things of interest that you find.

19 Salary in Shanghai

Ok im sorry guy but i would like to make some correction here. Not about the calcule but more about how much it cost to live here.

I dont know much expatriate who lives in a room for 1000 - 1200 RMB . It must be a really small room.most of people i know can find an appartment around 2500 to 3000 and 4000 if they want to be comfortable.

The subway its fine i agree with you but 6 yuans a day youwont go far and most of the them ill say that you have to take taxi and there is the big difference cause the meter bring the bill high really fast.

Mobile its 100 yuans for a card that fill your phone of units and internet its also an other issue cause it can be easy to go over our expectation.

you right for utilities they are cheap.

One thing you have'nt talk about its the food and drink on most of foreigner case its the first and more expensive thing. A restaurant (not chinese) easily 70 to 100 yuans with onedrink. A beer 20 yuans if you go to windows 2 but most of the place its 30 to 40 yuans its some stuff that you have to prepare cause 4 beers a months and you've spend more then your internet so .

On the other hand i agree with you that if you ready to live with 8 000 a month its possible but you have to be ready to do a lot of concession.

Its a fact that you can live there for that money but are you ready for it thats an other question.

Anyway hope to make it more clear for people by showing an other side of the life in shanghai then the one you've shown.

Shanghai its really a nice and enjoyable city no worry you will like it but i do think that you need between 15 to 20 yuans a months to enjoy it and be comfortable.

I just arrived in Hangzhou having flown to Shanghai. Jianshuo is spot on about the bus being the easiest way, but make sure that you note that the last one leaves at 17:30. 14 A Car Plate = 38500 RMB in Shanghai

It would be a whole lot more fair if everyone entered some sort of lottery, so that no matter how much money you had you were given an equal opportunity to get a plate. However, I don't think there is a better way to control congestion than to limit the number of automobile allowed in the city, given Shanghai's population.

10 Traffic Rules in Shanghai

Don't let people (foreigners especially) tell you how bad Shanghai's traffic is. Yes, it's busy, but as the first commenter pointed out the population density of Shanghai is insane compared to most major cities, so there's not much that can be done about it.

While I was there, I really didn't mind it much. Honestly, it is easier to cross a road in Shanghai than it is in most cities in the United States for two reasons:

1. Speed. Urban traffic in Shanghai never seems to get going very fast (because of the congestion). Plus, I think the speed limits are lower. Traffic here moves at a much faster rate, making jaywalking an even more dangerous proposition.

2. Drivers are more aware of pedestrians. Because Chinese drivers *expect* people to walk in front of them, they are more alert and ready to stop. In most major cities in the US, if you tried that you'd probably get run over by a woman putting on her makeup in her SUV :).

I agree with Xu that your tolerance in waiting for the light is commendable. I doubt I would be able to wait fifteen minutes before jaywalking :)

9 WHO Reports Shanghai Findings

Hopefully China will learn that, when it comes to health matters, "saving face" and not reporting disease outbreaks as soon as possible will only come back and bite them.

If China wants to be an integrated member of the world community then it needs to live up to the responsibilities that involves. We're totally connected through air travel these days, and so disease control is more important than ever. Hopefully the government in Beijing realizes now that the West isn't going to think badly of China if it reports a disease outbreak quickly and lets the WHO help, but we *will* think badly of them if they keep their mouths shut and create a global issue.
