25 Diesel Shortage Caused Traffic Jam

My parents are just back from a vacation to Yunnan and they were stuck in the traffic for several hours due to the diesel shortage there. It looks like the problem is all over China now.

23 We Filled Our Lives But Lost Our Souls

I do believe the guy or gal (for some reasons, I believe that is a gal) lives in San Francisco. The point is he/she may not care about owning a piece of property in SF so the housing bubble is not real issue. It is true in corporate America, the very topics of housing, money, families and education can be very much the same in China. However, it is also easiler to find the crowds that care less about what you do with your life in America and not judge you by how much money you make.

Could be a very good movie scene.

21 Grassroot Art in Seattle

Art is indeed everywhere, I am often amazed by the musuem quality art pieces in the ordinary American Household. The owners are not just those cool yuppies in the fashion business, they actually often turn out to be retired school teachers, nurses, housewives or chefs, they are not the wealthy bunch either, but they are so talented and their art pieces make you wow. Right there, you realize that there should be something more than an increasing number of highrises to claim a wonderful nation and culture.

15 Shanghai's Growth is Slowing Down

Slowing down in construction is good for Shanghai. I agree with that, at least it means less dust and dirt. :-)
I have not been back for almost three years, but I am shocked to see all those concrete jungles that Shanghai has been keeping building up over the years. It shows up in every pictures I find recently, now my high school is surrounded by highrises, some time you feel almost "no way out", as I felt when I visited Hongkong back then.
I think Shanghai should not stop building and extending public transportation such as subway and highways, but it should slow down building highrises.

14 The Sea Ranch , Hong Kong

Hi, Jianshuo:

Did you try seafood in Lantau island? They are so fresh and month-watering. There were so many seafood parlors along the beach 5 years ago. I don't know whether they are still around.

13 Starbucks in a Day - Beijing Version

Anyway, I am still looking forward to see the starbucks Beijing pictures. Local tea houses and bars can be another interesting target places to visit. But I don't think Starbucks are just for snobs, I can say that you are more likely to see locals than tourists in Starbucks, you might see a lot of white-collars and students there, so what? That sounds interesting...

10 Luoyang Tour - Day 1

So excited to see the pictures. Luoyang is the city where my parents got married. Dad was working in Luoyang and Mom took a train from Beijing (she happened to work in Beijing then) to marry him. Both of them had lived in Shanghai until they finished college. Their black and white wedding photo is taken there. Sweet memories. Thanks, Jianshuo.

7 Bye Bye, Pudong

I have the same take on the location issue, though I am living in the States now, I grow up in the quite area of HUASHAN AND XINHUA road. I like everything in the area, close to theatre, bakery, restaurants, magazine stands, fresh fruit stands, shoe repairs, bookstores, cafes, and Lawson, flower market. I noticed a lot of people try to focus on the bar-hopping nightlife in Puxi, which is not the real charm out there in the area.

My experience affact my locational choice at the moment, I can afford a comfortable nice house with a garden in the suburb here, it is good for investment plus the tax benefit. However, after struggling for a couple of weeks, I decide to stay in the city, an area remind of a lot of Hengshan Road, a quite elegancy and youthful peace. I cannot afford a condo here, but I enjoyed living here and got to know a lot of likely-minded friends here. Sometimes, one just have to listen to his own heart.

Jianshuo, hope you and wendy enjoy the life in Puxi, hope you got a good offer for your apartment in Pudong.

6 The Devil's in the Details

This may also apply to majority of Chinese restraurants in the States. People here associate Chinese foods to cheap greasy fast food and take-outs, partly because of the lousy interior design, food is only part of reasons why people want to eat out, they also want a nice atmosphere and presentation, at least, clean carpet.

5 Pudong or Puxi

three and a half years ago, a nice apartment near HengShan Road can still be found around RMB10,000/Square meter. Now it is definitely mission impossible.

3 Business Trips

Bed and Breakfast is a nice combination of comfort and ambiance. It is often owned by retired couple in the states, kids grow up and go to college in other cities, then the family house is converted to a small inn, with all the family photos, paintings, and each room can tell a story while one walks in. My favorite part is the home-made breakfast, one can also chat with the owners, get a first-hand info about the city and area you are visiting, which bakery has the best bread and cake, etc. you will be surprised that they probably can even speak asian language.

http://www.bedandbreakfast.com/

Unfortunately, there are no Chinese B&B listed yet, maybe one day, I will start one...

Jianshuo, enjoyed reading your blog for a long time, it keeps me close to my beloved hometown.

1 Starbucks in A Day - Part II

Can you post some photos of the Bin Jiang Starbucks? Haven't been back to Shanghai for more than 2 years, I really enjoy your updates on the beloved city. Regarding meeting and resting places in Shanghai, my favorites are Hot Chocolate and HanYuan Reading Room, Both a nice place to go, especially in a Sunday afternoon.
