53 How We Can Help?

On 25 May 08 evening, a Singapore TV Charity show alone raised about S$7M (RMB35M) for the Sichuan earthquake victims within 3 hours. There are also tens of millions dollars donations through Red-cross.

We just want the Sichuan people to know that the people from a small country can also play their parts to help.

50 Chinese Internet Turns Black and White

To force to mourn

No one is forcing anyone to mourn, even I am a foreigner.

On 19 May, when I told my staff that I was going to stand right infront of our building at 14:28 to pay my respect (3 mins slience mourning) to the earthquake's victims, all my 40 staff including the cleaning laidies, gardeners, security guards and all the management staff told me that they wanted to join me. I was very moved and all of us lines up orderly at the square. At that moment, most of us cried when the siren, cars on the road started horning.. all the people along the street all stopped walking and stood still for 3 mins.

We did that because we are human..

46 How We Can Help?

Very disappointed with Brain and Benny's remarks. Every country has their own policies, China is a big country, a country always prone with many big and small natural disasters, the PLA have ability and experiences to manage the aftermath of any of the disasters. Moreover, the earthquake areas are so wide spray, the foreign rescuse teams may not familiar with the geographic situation of Sichuan and cannot help much. Finally, the government allowed the Japan, Russia, Korea, SIngapore and Taiwan rescue teams to join in, just becuase they are nearer to China. I would like salute to the Chinese government who have been responding fast to mobilise the PLA to save more lives and also allowing the western reportors into the disaster areas.

41 Error in Western Media Report about Tibet

LR

I don't understand why you are getting so personal??
Everyone has the rights to give his/her view. I am a typical Singaporean. Before I came to China, I knew little about Tibet until I had met a Tibetian student during my trip to Gansu-Dunhuang last year. He told me about the life of his ancestors, the current life of the Tibetians and his family. So I am just sharing with all of you about what I have known that's all.

39 Error in Western Media Report about Tibet

Hi All

May I ask have anyone of you been to Tibet??
The Western media had distorted the facts of the present life of the ordinary Tibetians.
The life of today's Tibetians are much better than 50 years ago. If without the revolution of the CCP, there are many Tibetians still living in the dark aged slavery system.
In the past only the Dalai lamas, lamas, monks, businessmen and landlords were considered upper class, most of the Tibetians were slaves. I would like to urge those who know nothing about Tibet, go there and see yourself. The exiles are the upper class Tibetians, they want to restore the old Tibet. If you are talking about human rights, then most of the Tibetians in Tibet will not agree the returns of Dalai lama and go back to the old slavery system.

26 Grocery Cost in Shanghai, 2007

oncerest, I don't to urgue with you.
I meant with the Xchange rate of S$1 = RMB5. (S$1,500/mth = RMB 7,500) A S'porean could have a comfortable life in China.

I am a typical Chinese Singaporean. When my father was 5, he and his mother (my grandma) came to S'pore to join his father (my grandpa) in 1950. My mum came from China when she was a baby. Both had education and grown up here in spore. Both met in the university and married in the 70's. After trying hard for many years, they had their 1st child, that's me. My dad can speak few languages like English, Indonesian, Thai, Mandarin and Malay. I think many Singaporeans are having the same story like mine.

25 Grocery Cost in Shanghai, 2007

oncerest, stop insulting. “不知足” your life sucks even you earned S$10K/mth. I bet, most of your country men can't earn this and you should not complain. I am glad that you are not in Singapore anymore, you must have found a place you like. Why you are so unfriendly?? We are here to share and discuss, not to insult.

I feel sorry for Jianshuo, his intention just to update the cost of living in Shanghai. I used S$1,500 as an example only. The fresh 'U' grade will get a salary range from $1,500 - $3,000. The latest MBA grade from SMU can earn up to S$12K/mth.

My dad is an engineer, our household income is S$20K/mth. I earn within the range of fresh grade and live with my parents. Life will not be comfortable if I move out.

You don't like the hot weather in Singapore, too bad we can't change the weather for you. Do you know that refrigerator can keep your food fresh??? 22 Grocery Cost in Shanghai, 2007

It is expensive if we base on the local income 1RMB to S$1 in Singapore for comparison.
Monthly income : 1,500 RMB vs S$1,500 (ordinary income)
Cucumber : 6.00 vs S$1.50
Tomato : 5.20 vs S$1.00
Chicken Wings : 9.56 vs S$3.00
Pork : 5.92 vs S$2.50
Vegetables : 2.80 vs S$1.50
Strawberries : 3.98 vs S$4.50
Red Pepper : 1.30 vs S$2.00
Taxi fare(Basic) : 10 RMB vs S$2.50

Exchange Rate S1.00 = 5.00 RMB
So a ordinary income singaporean can have comfortable life in Shanghai.

13 Why We Use English Signs?

English language is easy to learn even if your don't start learning at young age.
As for Chinese language it the other way round, you have to learn it when you are young.
English is a Global language and it easy to link people from different race and culture.

There are many foriegn investements in China, especially Shanghai and Beijing. They are like many other cosmopolitan cities in the world, we see more foriegners in China than before. So English is very important to the Chinese if they want to communicate and understand the people from other part of the world.

I have extracted a news dated 17 Oct 06 from a Chinese paper:

This is just a reminder for improvement and it is not meant to insult the Chinese.

10 Beggars in China and People's Attitude

Hi Jianshuo, there must be laws in your country to save and protect the Child beggars. It is really sad to see the poor children being abused.

Many years ago, I had seen a lot of Child beggars on my first trip to China after finishing high school. It was terrifying when all of them about 10 surrounded me and begged for money, later the hotel security came to the rescue.

Two years ago in Suzhou, I was told by my Taichi teacher not to give money to beggars, they were not local and some were pick-pockets. Through out my stay in Suzhou for 1 month, I was harassing by the Xinjiang kids or beggars at least 2 times per day, Whenever I need to travel further, my teacher would accompany me. Sometimes, I felt so sorry for them when my teacher was so harsh on them.

Too bad, I am not the resident here. I really want to help these poor children. Where is the "Muhammad Yunus" of China?? Where are the wealthy men?

I want to work for them if they are setting up a charity organisation to help the unfortunate. "Give them a fish they eat for a day. Teach them to fish they eat for their whole life"

Shanghai here I come! May be next year, have to save money for the airticket.
