5 Foreign Language Only Signs?

I think it's a GREAT idea to have Chinese signs as well. We're in China, after all!

For example, in Japan there are also lots of "authentic" Irish pubs, American bars, etc etc, but because many Japanese people do not read English, it makes practical sense and so it's common to display menus, signs, in both languages. Same principle, in NY or London the Chinese restaurants (in both Chinatowns and downtown areas) will have menus in both languages usually.

Also, as a matter of business - does Xintiandi wants ALL its customers to be foreigners or Chinese who read English? Why exclude the majority of the local population? Customers are customers because they pay for products/ services. Language ability and nationality definitely isn't important at all. The shop/ restaurant has to satisfy the customer, not the other way round.

Well, if I go to an Italian or Mexican restaurant I would surely appreciate the business owner's effort in describing some particular items on the menus. If not knowing Italian gets in the way of understanding what I'm eating (ie paying for), then there are tons of other choices out there. The customer is king.

Anyways, truth be told, these "authentic" places will never be totally real, they're recreations. Cultural exchange works both ways. So excluding anyone on something of language ability is simply ridiculous, a big NO-NO!

4 PVG: Book Domestic Flight in China

Hi,

I will be travelling during the week of the labour holiday (May 1 2007). I will be in Shanghai for a week prior on business and can purchase flight tickets then for my trips below (arrive april 22). Will this be too late given the holidays? It is too expensive to book from North America. If one week prior is too late to book do you have any suggestions of how to book from here cheaply?

Shanghai-Beijing: 4/27/07
Beijing-Guilin 5/2/2007

Thanks for your help!

2 Relocating to Shanghai

Hi there,

I am across this blog and find it very informative! I may be relocating from Los Angeles to Shanghai in a few months due to my husband job opportunity and wanted to see if you had any advice in regards to what other websites to look at, books to read to get an understanding about the cost of living, logistics, finances (how to set up a bank account) , any 'I wish I knew to do these following things before I moved from the U.S to Shanghai' advice.

I'm leaving my fulltime job for my husband to pursue his dream and was glad to see that there are some job opportunities for me out there in Shanghai. I'm a business analyst and worked at Accenture, Toyota, and other companies so any advice on job opportunites would be great!!

Thanks so much!

Sincerely,
Karen

1 Sina, Sohu or Netease?

Mr Wangjianshuo,
I am glad to read this article on this morning, I am respect for you analysis, meanwhile I have one queation to ask what do you think the next step of Netease business stratgey. I mean any large corperation should have a certian business plan, say, what is gotta do when we after finish the pervious stage, and how can we use the objects to build up our final goals. Any business strategy at least more than more than Five years, even 10 nyears. Presently, netease has already comeback to the NASDAQU and it becomes the third protal of China's IT industryand last year reveune is 39 million US dollars. What is they want for next. be a MUltinational fir? or move to the oversea marke?
I have to say no matter Sina, Sohu or Netease, all of these Chinese IT business lack of a Business stratey, we still have far to go, compare with many sucessful global IT brand Amezon.com, Yahoo.com, our chinese IT business nelgece their own specility, they resemble the much more same. let me move to their service, last month i tried to contact Netease's marketing and selling department,i Email them but the postmaster replied me on the day after i sent the email, said the email address was failed to find. what will the customer think about it a IT big brother who has no any correct email address. I was frustrated.
However, as a oversea Chinese we believe one day there will be no more gap between our business with the foreignor's.could you relp me with your answer, because I am doing a project for Chinese new entrepreneurs. I'll appreciate all the help you do for me and take care.
your Frankly
