17 Personal Income Tax in China

It will be great if someone can point out the tax structures for foreigners working in China. For whatever reasons, I thought it is still the same structure, but higher deductions. is easy deduction rate still applicable to foreigners?

16 Smiling Saturday

Hi, WJS,

I saw you walking with another guy on SiNan Road (near NanChang road)Saturday morning. Since I haven't met you, so I did not say hi... Maybe I should... As a very busy person, you are certainly showing the great hearts for committing some great social causes over the long haul. This is really a nice way to demonstrate a strong and socially responsible emerging leadership in making, it is especially important as our generation is making great impacts to the society. Thank you for doing this and thank you for showing the society that our generation is changing China for the better.

15 Craigslist's Success

Even though I am not a regular on craig'slist. I am impressed by its simplicity and easy reach to mass audiances. Besides selling 2rd hand products, Craig'slist offers a varity of services, which target different ppl. Its platform setup differently from Ebay's and other trading websites, which became more and more focused on professional buyers and sellers. Many ppl on such sites are purely profit driven. Ebay is an extraordinary company with a great business model, but it is unlike Ebay 10 years ago based on the personal feeling. The layout of causual community is the most appealing selling point for Craig'slist, which has personal touches and connections that Ebay lacks. Clicking into Ebay, you will find youself in a formal business structure more like walking in a department store. On the other hand, Craig'slist just like a Mom/Pop shop around the corner. Put this way, if Ebay is a business entity, then I would say Craig'slist is a nonprofit organization. As someone mentioned above it is a double edged sword. Just a note, A great entity has to have both business and social conciousness. Really wish Kijiji finds its own way to serve the needs of both business and society.

14 eGuo One Hour?

wondering who is the VC behind Eguo. Surfed the site briefly yesterday, it seems that the business model and structure needs to have a serious makeover. As an online service provider, the site is not that easy to go around.

11 Jian Shuo Wang at Kijiji China

good point, John! I think with Jianshuo's ability, he can run his e-commerce site. Maybe jianshuo doesn't want to get through the VC fund raising hussles. Maybe this is an opportunity for jianshuo to practice his entrepreneurial skills under a big umbrella and test the water first, then strike his own... This is also a smart move.

10 Jian Shuo Wang at Kijiji China

Congrats, JianShuo, Good luck with your new position. With your skills, ability and talent, you will be very successful in the years to come. Although I never heard about Kijiji before, I think it will become Ebay China's major revenue driver in the coming years because of you. If you can turn your own personal blog to a "cult", then I truely believe you can lead Kijiji to a successful e-business model.... I bet in 2 years, kijiji will become a household name in China. Maybe it is time to jump in Ebay's stock now, I buy Ebay because I believe in you! Btw, kijiji looks like US's craiglists list which has a lot of followers...

9 Does Shanghai have Beach

Shanghai used to have a beach in GaoQiao, about 10 years ago. That was quite an attraction back then, I used to go there every summer. I think GaoQiao(China?) petro (correct me if I am wrong) has built the facilities not long after the beach opened. Technically, the beach was there for only a few short years to the public. Because I have relatives lived down there, so I knew that before it became public. During these days, only locals and few others knew the place swam down there. It was a public beach without any charges before it was opened for commerical use. Anyway, that was not a good beach, just close to the sea and nowhere close to HaiNan. Love these old days, it was packed almost everyday in the summer.

8 No Baggars Premitted on Metro?

Jianshuo, I am very glad that you bring up this issue. If they don't beg, where are they going to end up? Chinese Gov't should have good prevention system in place, not only help these kids, but also effectively crack down those ppl who control the operation. The beggars can be the sources of many problems, but the ppl behind the operations are the worst. These are the person should be prosecuted without mercy. Not allowing beggars, newspapers sellings can only cure the problems on the surface, but if ppl think deeply then there is a entirely new wave of social problems, such as unequal distribution of wealth, corruption, education, etc... Stop selling newspaper in Metro? How these ppl can live with only very limited income? They wanna do good in living like anyone else, but different reasons forced them to take this low wage earning jobs. Without these very basic living tools, their lifes are getting harder and harder. Why Gov't is not going to stop housing speculations, rather take on the ppl who live under the proverty? Surely, housing development does save face for gov't, but not ppl who need the most.

7 Zhuo Zheng Yuan of Suzhou

SuZhou Gardens are majestic artworks, they are the real treasures accumulated by thousands years of chinese culture. Only Japanese gardens are comparable with their unique, delicated designs and very articulated landscapings. Of course, Japanese gardens are somewhat emulated the Chinese versions. Any ideas how many gardens are there in SuZhou? I went to Suzhou a few times, that's more than 10 years ago. But I have no clues exactly how many gardens out there... JianShou, why do you think SuZhou is better than XinZhuang? Because it is easy for ppl to access everything within their reaches? Or the development itself ? Just curious, maybe it is not a bad option for ppl to start commute from SuZhou to Shanghai everyday in the future if there is a fast train connect to each city. In my view, SuZhou and HangZhou will be considered as satellite cities for Shanghai in the future ( many many yrs down the road). As someone mention early on this board, ppl will consider moving out of the city. Definitely these two cities are the top choices for ppl working in Shanghai. Certainly the transpotation infrastructure should improve in order to keep up with the trends. "Hu Kou" should not be a factor in ppl's life and the wealth distribution is more balanced between coastal and inner cities. Just a thought.

6 Don't Let Social Software Become Spam Ware

I have to agree. When these invitations or web sites first came to the scene in US a few years ago, I thought they were pretty cool. Unfortunately, it was just matter of time to turn this great idea to spam. Whenever you provide your email address online, it will eventually become a timed spam bomb. The initial purpose was good, but there is always someone trying to flip it. Maybe the website owner has the interntion to do it as well? I understand not long ago, the clicks/site visits/memberships were the determining factors for a startup to turn itself to a gold mine. Not anymore, it is all about revenues and profits for a web business... Look at how many junks I receive everyday? So I am basically stop signing up any mailing lists, unless that's a reputable major institution. I'd rather to create my own contact lists on my PDAs or save that in my email box. Why we have to share the social network? Do I really know my friend's friend just by sending an email?

5 Jinjiang (Jin Jiang) Inn at Shanghai Pudong Airport

Luchaogang sounds like a very attractive and special place to be. Carsten, what's the word in Chinese for that village? Anything special in that town, besides the fishing? It could be an unique weekend get away place.

4 Jinjiang (Jin Jiang) Inn at Shanghai Pudong Airport

For some reasons, I still enjoy the ride from downtown to the Pu Dong airport, especially in the misty mornings. Becasue there aren't much traffics when you cross the river. The quite and peaceful morning in Pu Dong reminds me the morning of downtown Shanghai 15 years ago. Nowadays, Shanghai is very very commercialize even in western standard. I do enjoy the city very much, but there are soemthing missing... That part of Pu Dong is still under the development(I cross the Lu Pu bridge), I bet it will look more like Lu Jia Zui or Pu Xi in 5 years because of the 2010 world expo. Do we really need a place where we can reflect or get away for a while in Shanghai (without leaving the city)? A place that is simple in nature and not that chaotic? Anywhere in Shanghai we can go in the next 5-10 years?

3 Rainy Crazy Friday Night in Shanghai

Saigon is the capital of vietnam. Because Chinese translation did not proper translate the capital city based on the pronounciation, it is hard for Chinese to understand in Englsih. That's something always intrigues me, becasue some Chinese translations for the foreign city were based on the pronounciation, but some not. In order for ppl to have a better grasp of english name, a standard translation format(the closest pronouciation) needs to be establish in order to void confusions.

2 Spring Festival in 2005

jun, I think Rennaissance shanghai pudong hotel is near Century Park. There is no metro that will get ur there. Maglev Train will get u to the metro 2 stop( I cannot remember the name of the stop, the ticket is cost 40 yuan with the same day air ticket), then you can take metro 2 to century park station ( I am not sure how far the Rennaissance is from century park station, but 10 yuan taxi will take you there). Also I believe that the airport shuttle will take you to that metro 2 stop as well ( the one connecting Maglev Train ). If you have a lot of luggages, then it will make sense to take the taxi from PVG.

1 Spring Festival in 2005

jianshuo:

I stumbled to your blog while I was in shanghai early this month. The information and stories you provided on your website is very interesting and objective. After I came back to the states a few days ago, I started to review your previous posts. I am very impressed by your consistency and informative daily blog. When I was in Shanghai early this year, I discovered that the city has changed a lot since my last visit during the Chinese new year in 2003. Your blogs provides me what I have been missed during these short two year, at least from a city dweller's perspective. Your personal and professional growth somewhat mirrors the growth of the new generation as well as the prosperity of the city and China. Anyway, thank you so much for keeping me updated on what's going on in Shanghai. Keep in touch and hope we can meet sometime in SH.
