8 Shanghai Looks Similar to US, But...

Jianshuo, I have several questions for you:

1. Compared to 30 or 20 years ago, do you think that political reform is happening gradually? When you compare the logic and fact, you are actually comparing today's chinese government approach to today's western government policy. You really need to think about 50 or 100 years ago, how did American build their railway througout the country. How many Chinese worker lost their lives (not to mention their human rights) during that tough project under tough natural condition? and also you need to consider about China's huge population base, does western government approach really work in a city with such a high population density...?

2. According to your own experience, you really think that the huge changes happened in China are just the appearance that sacrifice people's interest? Then how to explain your own experience and many other young employees of foreign companies? They did get benefit from the changes and obviously it is not just the "appearance"...Do you agree that the changes happened in urban area will finally spread to rural village as long as China focuses on economy development?

3. Do you think its a good idea and a right time to copy western democratic political system and bring it to China at current stage? Are you sure that Chinese people including the farmers of rural area are ready for the democracy? Considering the education and exposure that chinese people get about the western democracy, are you sure that democracy will be properly interpreted and applied in people's daily life?

4. As a member on the beneficiary chain, what would you do to help your own country?

5. If you think the political reform has never happened, what do you think the government should do at current stage?

6 In China, His Pay is Hers to Spend?

If it is true, that maybe one reason why China is behind Japan and Korea.
Look at India, Parkistan before, their prime minister used to be women. After Vajpayee took on power, India began to be on the right track for development, gained power in the international family.
Look at Philipine, Indonesia, their presidents are women now. I do not think these two countries current situation will be better.
You may say that Victoria's Britain was superpower. But she did not have real power over the government.

5 Chinatowns in U.S.

My first and last visit to NYC so far was in 2001. I did not go to China town, but take the tour bus in Freshing (Forget the real spelling, but it was called in Chinese as Fa La Sheng). My only thought about that area is that if I have no choice but to live there, I will never come to USA. That place is not my dream of life.
I agree with most opinions of WJS about China town. If we are always feel comfortable about the low standard of our live, then we may never have motivation to make progress.
We need to have the courage to admit our shortcomings, to have the courage to change for better.

4 Back from Geek Diner in Bellevue

One more comments on the address naming system:
Ave--- Southh/North direction
St ---- East/West direction
I suggest all new development of Chinese city address and street names use this style---self informed.

2 Top Three Innovation that Failed in Shanghai

If Shanghai wants to be a national city( all Chinese people's city, not just Shanghai people's city), and an international city, then new convenient name convention for all must be implemented. I like the city street and highway exit named with numbers, because numbers are self-sequency-indicated. For example, if I like to get off the highway to place A, I just need to know which high way exit number I need to take, for example, exit #20. Before approching exit #20, when I see exit #18, #19 (or #22, #21), then I know I am close to the destination exit, and prepare to exit the high way (like change lane, slow down, etc).
The highway and city street in California is not named this way, which causes lots of trouble for people from other places.

1 Basic Geographic Knowledge about China

I agree with JoyMocha. Maybe except the independent hall, what else can reminds people about Philadephia? Here are some thing can remind you about Seattle:
Home town of Microsoft, used to be headquarter of Boeing (still most important and biggest factory site of Boeing), Starbucks, Amazon, Costco, most profitable bank of north America -- Washinton Mutual, RealNetworks, Expedia, ....
